About these codes. Compiled from JURA Canada and global professional-machine documentation, cross-checked against our GTA repair logs. Updated August 2026
Brew unit
5 codesError 8 Brew group / brew unit fault
The brew group failed to complete its motion cycle. The encoder didn't read the expected motor revolutions. This is the single most common Jura fault.
Likely causes
- Coffee grounds jamming the brew piston
- Worn brew group cam followers or gears
- Failed encoder
- Failed gear motor
Try this first
- Unplug the machine for 5 minutes (resets the cycle position).
- If your model has a removable brew group, take it out, rinse it warm, and reinstall.
- Lubricate the brew group if it's been a while (Jura-safe grease only).
If Error 8 comes back within a day, the brew group needs refurbishment or replacement. We see this regularly at 2,000+ cycles. Call us.
Error 9 (GIGA) GIGA brew unit secondary fault
On GIGA models, a brew-unit cycle fault distinct from Error 8. Indicates the secondary brew unit (GIGAs have two) or a different stage of the brew cycle failed.
Likely causes
- Second brew unit jammed
- Worn drive components on a high-volume GIGA
- Cross-contaminated grind buildup
Try this first
- Unplug for 5 minutes.
- Power back on and run a rinse cycle.
- Document which side of the GIGA is misbehaving if observable.
GIGA brew units work hard, so they need service sooner than a single-brew Jura. If the code returns after a power-cycle, book us in.
Error 15 (GIGA) Coffee chute / dosing fault
Coffee delivery from the grinder to the brew chamber failed, or the bypass doser (for ground coffee) is blocked.
Likely causes
- Stale grounds packing the chute
- Bypass doser door not closing
- Sensor on the chute failed
Try this first
- Brush out the coffee chute and bypass funnel.
- Confirm the bypass doser lid sits flush.
- Restart the cycle.
If Error 15 persists after a clean-out, the chute and its sensor need inspecting. Book a visit.
Empty Grounds Grounds container full
The puck counter has hit capacity. Empty the grounds container.
Likely causes
- Container actually full
- Counter not reset
- Door not opened long enough on last empty
Try this first
- Remove, empty, rinse, and reinsert.
- Keep the service door open at least 5-10 seconds.
- Confirm the counter resets.
Only a service issue if the counter refuses to reset.
Spout Down / Adjust Spout Spout position fault
On machines with motorized height-adjustable spouts, the spout couldn't reach the requested position.
Likely causes
- Cup or obstruction blocking spout travel
- Worn spout drive
- Position sensor failure
Try this first
- Remove anything in the spout's path.
- Manually push the spout to its home position.
- Power-cycle.
Spout drive parts are available, but fitting them is a technician job. Call us.
Boiler
5 codesError 1 Heating circuit / thermoblock fault
The thermoblock (Jura's instant-heating element, used instead of a traditional boiler) is reading outside its expected temperature range, so the machine cuts the heater to protect itself.
Likely causes
- Failed NTC temperature sensor on the thermoblock
- Scale buildup insulating the sensor from the element
- Failed safety thermostat
- Loose connector on the sensor harness
Try this first
- Power off at the switch, wait 30 seconds, power back on.
- Confirm the descale cycle is current.
- If overdue, run descale before retrying.
If the descale is current and Error 1 persists, the sensor or thermoblock needs servicing. Call us.
Error 2 Thermoblock heating fault
The thermoblock isn't heating to the expected temperature within the allowed time. Either the element has degraded or the sensor is reporting low.
Likely causes
- Scaled thermoblock with reduced heat transfer
- Failed heating element
- Failed NTC sensor
- Power supply issue
Try this first
- Power-cycle and check if the machine completes its startup heat-up.
- Run descale if it's been a while.
- Confirm the outlet voltage is stable.
If a descale doesn't bring the heating back, the element usually needs replacing. Book a service visit.
Error 4 Steam temperature fault
On machines with a separate steam thermoblock or steam circuit, the steam temperature is outside the expected window. Steam drinks may be locked out.
Likely causes
- Failed steam NTC sensor
- Scale in the steam circuit
- Steam element degradation
Try this first
- Power-cycle.
- Confirm coffee dispenses normally (isolates issue to steam side).
- Run descale if overdue.
If coffee works but steam doesn't, the steam circuit needs servicing. Book a visit.
Error 6 Heating overrun / pre-heat failure
The machine couldn't preheat within the allowed time on startup. Similar to Error 2 but typically seen at cold boot.
Likely causes
- Heavy scaling
- Degraded element
- Cold ambient temperature combined with marginal element
Try this first
- Allow the machine to warm to room temperature if it's been somewhere cold.
- Power-cycle and let it run a full preheat undisturbed.
- Run descale if overdue.
If Error 6 keeps coming back, the machine needs a professional descale or a new element. Book a service visit.
Error 14 Machine overheated
The machine has measured an overheating condition, usually on the thermoblock or the steam circuit. Safety lockout activates.
Likely causes
- Stuck heater relay
- Failed NTC sensor under-reading
- Failed Klixon safety
Try this first
- Power off and unplug for 30 minutes to let the machine cool.
- Do not attempt to retry until fully cooled.
- Note the exact code shown before powering off.
Overheating is a safety event. Don't put the machine back into service; call us first.
Milk system
2 codesError 10 (GIGA) Drainage / milk system fault
On GIGA machines, this is a drainage or milk-system fault: milk isn't flowing, or the drainage path is blocked.
Likely causes
- Dried milk in the cappuccino spout
- Blocked drainage path
- Milk pump worn
- Milk-line air leak
Try this first
- Run the cappuccino-system rinse cycle.
- Disassemble and rinse the milk frother (consumer-cleanable on GIGA).
- Check the milk line and connector seals.
If a thorough clean doesn't clear it, the milk pump or solenoid needs servicing. Call us.
Error 11 (GIGA) Cooler / refrigeration fault
The Jura Cool Control (or a third-party cooler) has lost communication or is reading out of range. Milk drinks may be restricted until it's resolved.
Likely causes
- Cooler unplugged
- Cooler thermostat failed
- Communication cable damaged
- Cooler condenser blocked
Try this first
- Confirm the cooler is powered and running.
- Check the cooler temperature with an independent thermometer.
- Reconnect the communication cable if applicable.
Cooler faults are their own repair. Tell us the cooler model when you book and we'll bring the right parts.
Grinder
4 codesError 17 (GIGA) Grinder fault (GIGA)
One of the GIGA's two grinders is reporting a fault: no beans, blocked burrs, or a motor problem.
Likely causes
- Hopper empty on the affected side
- Beans bridging
- Foreign object in the burrs
- Motor or sensor failure
Try this first
- Refill the hopper.
- Tap to release bridging.
- Inspect for stones or foreign objects with the machine off and unplugged.
If beans flow freely and Error 17 stays on, the grinder motor or its sensor needs servicing. Call us.
Error 19 Bean hopper sensor / no beans
The bean hopper is empty, or the empty sensor isn't reading beans correctly.
Likely causes
- Hopper actually empty
- Beans clumped above the throat
- Failed empty sensor
Try this first
- Refill the hopper.
- Tap to dislodge bridging.
- Run a grinder cycle to test.
If the hopper is full and beans feed normally, the empty sensor itself needs replacing.
Fill Beans Bean hopper empty
Operator-facing prompt to refill the bean hopper. Not a fault, just a notification.
Likely causes
- Hopper empty
- Empty-sensor confused by bean bridging
Try this first
- Open the lid, refill with fresh beans.
- Tap the hopper to settle.
- Run a grinder cycle to confirm clearance.
Not a service issue unless the sensor stays on with a full hopper.
Bean Hopper Closed Bean hopper lid open
The bean hopper lid is not seated. Some models won't grind until the lid is closed.
Likely causes
- Lid genuinely open
- Lid sensor magnet weak
- Foreign object preventing full close
Try this first
- Close the bean hopper lid firmly.
- Wipe any bean debris off the lid lip.
- Confirm magnet is intact.
If the lid is clearly closed and the message stays, the lid sensor needs servicing.
Electronics
3 codesError 3 Reserved / general electronic fault
A general electronic fault flagged by the controller. It often appears alongside other codes and means the machine couldn't complete a self-check.
Likely causes
- Transient electrical issue
- Failed sensor on the diagnostic bus
- Firmware glitch
Try this first
- Power off at the switch and unplug for 60 seconds.
- Plug back in and watch for full startup completion.
- Document any companion codes that appear.
If Error 3 survives a long power-off, the controller needs proper diagnosis. Call us.
Error 12 (GIGA) Communication / CAN bus fault
Internal communication error between the GIGA's main board and a subsystem controller (display, milk, cooler, or grinder). The affected subsystem is locked out.
Likely causes
- Loose internal cable
- Failed subsystem controller
- Firmware mismatch after an update
Try this first
- Unplug for 5 minutes.
- Power back on and document which subsystems return.
- Leave the machine closed; internal connectors are technician territory.
Communication faults need a diagnostic tool. Call us.
Error 16 (GIGA) Reserved / model-specific fault
A model-specific fault whose exact meaning varies by firmware version. It typically points to a sensor on the secondary boiler or steam wand.
Likely causes
- Sensor specific to the GIGA model failed
- Firmware mismatch
Try this first
- Power-cycle.
- Note any accompanying messages.
- Document the firmware version if you can find it in the service menu.
Call us with the firmware version. We'll match it to the right diagnosis.
Water
6 codesError 5 Hot water / flow fault
Air is trapped in the water circuit, or the pump can't draw water. The flow meter sees no movement. It often appears right after the tank runs dry.
Likely causes
- Water tank run completely dry
- Pump airlocked
- Tank float stuck
- Pump worn
Try this first
- Refill the tank and reseat it firmly.
- Use the steam wand or hot water spout to bleed air: open the wand and select hot water for 10-15 seconds.
- Tap the tank to dislodge any stuck float.
If priming the wand doesn't clear it, the pump needs servicing. Call us.
Error 7 Pump pressure fault
The pump is running but not generating the expected pressure. Brew may be weak or fail to complete.
Likely causes
- Pump worn (most common at high cycle counts)
- Internal leak bypassing pressure
- Pressure sensor failure
- Scale restricting flow
Try this first
- Power-cycle.
- Try a hot water dispense and listen to the pump.
- Note whether coffee is also weak (correlates).
If the brew stays weak after a power-cycle, the pump likely needs replacing. It's a common service item past 3 years of heavy use; call us.
Error 22 Smart water filter not recognized
The machine can't detect the CLARIS Smart filter in the water tank. Filter recognition is RFID-based: a small reader in the tank housing checks the tag on the cartridge, and when that handshake fails the machine reports Error 22 and stops tracking filter life.
Likely causes
- Expired or defective CLARIS Smart filter cartridge
- Non-genuine (non-OEM) filter without a working RFID tag
- RFID sensor damaged, often by water spilled while refitting the tank
- Faulty RFID antenna coil between the sensor and the board
Try this first
- Remove the filter, refit the tank, and select 'No Filter' if prompted.
- Wipe the tank seat dry, then reinsert the same filter firmly.
- If the error returns, try a new genuine CLARIS Smart filter.
If a genuine filter still isn't recognized, the RFID sensor or its antenna coil needs testing and replacement. Call us. The machine can run with 'No Filter' selected in the meantime, but descaling then has to be tracked manually.
Fill Water Tank Water tank empty
The water tank is empty or isn't seated properly. The machine won't dispense until it's resolved.
Likely causes
- Tank actually empty
- Tank not pushed in firmly
- Float stuck
- Magnet on the float lost (rare)
Try this first
- Refill the tank with fresh cold water.
- Reseat firmly until it clicks home.
- Tap to dislodge a stuck float.
If the message stays on with a full, properly seated tank, the float or sensor needs servicing. Call us.
Fill System Prime water system
A prompt to prime the water lines, not a fault. It appears after the tank runs dry, after the machine is moved, or on first install.
Likely causes
- Tank ran completely dry
- Machine was unplugged or moved
- Air introduced into the lines
Try this first
- Place a cup under the steam wand.
- Open the steam knob (or tap the prompt) and let water flow until it streams steadily.
- Close the knob and resume normal operation.
If the system won't prime after a minute of trying, the pump is likely airlocked or worn. Call us.
Replace Filter Water filter change required
The CLARIS filter cartridge has reached its rated volume. Swap it and reset the counter.
Likely causes
- Filter at end of rated life
- Counter triggered by cup count
Try this first
- Insert a new CLARIS Smart or CLARIS White filter (model-specific).
- Follow the filter-change prompts.
- Confirm the counter resets.
Only a service issue if the prompt persists after a correct filter swap.
Cleaning
2 codesClean / Cleaning Cleaning cycle required
The cleaning interval has been reached. Run the full cleaning program with a Jura cleaning tablet.
Likely causes
- Cleaning interval timer reached
- Last cleaning was skipped
Try this first
- Run the cleaning cycle with a genuine Jura cleaning tablet.
- Follow the prompts end-to-end without interruption.
- Confirm the counter resets at the end.
Not a service call unless the cycle won't run to completion. If it stalls partway, call us.
Descaling / Decalcify Descaling required
The descale interval has been reached, based on your water hardness setting and cup count. Run the descale program.
Likely causes
- Descale interval reached
- Hardness setting too high (premature prompt)
- Filter not being used in hard-water area
Try this first
- Run the descale cycle with Jura descaler tablets.
- Follow the prompts to completion (it takes 25-45 minutes).
- Reset the descale counter.
Call us only if the cycle won't complete or the counter won't reset afterward.
Other
2 codesEmpty Drip Tray Drip tray full
The internal counter says the drip tray is full. Empty it before continuing.
Likely causes
- Tray actually full
- Tray not seated correctly
- Counter not reset after last empty
Try this first
- Pull, empty, rinse, and reinsert the drip tray.
- Confirm it sits flush in the machine.
- Wait 5 seconds for the sensor.
Only worth a call if the counter won't reset after a proper empty and reseat.
Power Save Mode Energy save active
The machine has entered standby due to the energy save timer. Not a fault.
Likely causes
- Inactivity timer reached
Try this first
- Tap any button or the screen to wake the machine.
- Adjust the energy save timeout in the menu if it's too aggressive.
Not a service item.

FAQ
Jura error codes, frequently asked.
9 answers about resetting codes, recurring faults, firmware versions, and when DIY ends. If the recurring ones are descale or water warnings, start with the right Jura water filter.
Updated August 2026
What does Jura error code Error 1 mean?
Every documented Jura fault we see is listed above, with its meaning, common causes, and what to try before calling a technician. If the code on your machine isn't on this page, call us with the exact display string and we'll work it out by phone.
Can I clear or reset a Jura error code myself?
Sometimes. Many Jura codes clear after a power cycle, a completed descale, or a counter reset through the service menu. Codes tied to a hardware fault (failed sensor, blown element, board issue) will return immediately and need a technician. Each code above lists what's safe to try first.
Why does the same Jura error keep coming back?
A code that returns after a power cycle is signalling a real fault, not a glitch. The underlying part (sensor, heating element, valve, motor, board) needs replacement. Repeat codes are diagnostic gold for us, so call with the exact code and any timing or symptom pattern you've noticed.
My Jura code isn't listed. Why?
Jura updates fault tables across firmware revisions and model generations, and not every code is documented publicly. We see codes in the field that aren't in any published list. Call us with the exact display string and the model and we'll work it out from our service log.
How fast can you get on-site if I'm stuck on an error code?
Most calls in Toronto and the immediate GTA get same-day on-site response. Tell us the code and the model when you book and we'll bring the right parts on the first visit so the repair finishes the same day.
Do I need to be authorized by Jura to reset an error code?
No. We're an independent service provider, not affiliated with Jura, and we work on machines outside the manufacturer's authorized network routinely. That independence lets us service older or out-of-warranty machines authorized networks may decline, and quote transparently every time.
Is it worth fixing an old Jura machine that keeps throwing codes?
Depends on the machine, the code, and the cost. We give you honest math on this. If repairs are starting to exceed roughly 50% of a refurbished replacement and multiple major systems are throwing codes, we'll tell you it's time to look at replacing rather than running up the repair bill.
Will independent service void my Jura warranty?
If your machine is under the manufacturer's warranty, independent service may affect coverage depending on Jura's specific terms. Try the manufacturer's authorized network first. If their response is slow or they decline coverage for your code, call us and we'll service it on standard terms.
How many Jura codes are documented on this page?
29 codes are documented above, organized by the system they affect. The list is compiled from manufacturer service literature, technician forums, and our own service log. We update it as new codes appear or firmware adds new states.
