Tank

The tank hasn't reached its set temperature inside the allowed warm-up window, so the controller cuts heating to protect the element.
Likely causes
- Heating element open or scaled to insulation
- Element relay (SSR or contactor) failed
- High-limit thermostat tripped
- Tank under-filled at warm-up

- Verify the supply is open and the tank is filling
- Reset the high-limit if accessible
- Power-cycle the machine
Most heating timeouts on these brewers come down to a scaled element or a tripped high-limit. We descale, test, and replace whatever's at fault.
Heating

The mechanical high-limit has tripped open and cut power to the element, and brewing stays disabled until it's reset.
Likely causes
- Tank ran dry and overheated
- Element runaway from a stuck SSR or contactor
- High-limit thermostat itself failed
Try this first
- Allow the tank to cool fully
- Reset the high-limit button if accessible
- Confirm water level is normal

Brew valve

The controller told the brew valve to open but the feedback says it rarely moved, so brewing is locked out.
Likely causes
- Brew valve solenoid coil open
- Solenoid driver on the controller failed
- Wiring loom disconnected
Try this first
- Power-cycle the machine
- Visually verify the brew valve wiring is seated

E7 Brew cycle timeout
The brew cycle ran past its maximum allowed time, so it aborted to head off an overfill.
Likely causes
- Brew valve sluggish or partially closed
- Severely scaled sprayhead
- Flow meter pulses missing
- Programmed batch volume exceeds spec

- Confirm batch size matches model spec
- Inspect the sprayhead for scale

Decanter
1 codeServer / Shuttle Missing Shuttle or airpot not detected on base
On PrecisionBrew Shuttle and Airpot models with server-detect, the brewer is reading the dispenser as missing, so it locks out brewing rather than pour without a server in place.
Likely causes
- Shuttle / airpot actually not in position
- Server-detect microswitch contaminated with coffee
- Switch arm bent or misaligned
Try this first
- Reseat the shuttle or airpot firmly on the base
- Brush coffee residue out of the switch area
If the server is in place but the fault sticks, the detect switch needs cleaning or replacing.
Warmer
1 codeE12 Warmer / shuttle base sensor fault
On A-Series satellite brewers and PrecisionBrew Shuttle units with warmer feedback, the warmer thermostat or its sensor is reading abnormally.
Likely causes
- Warmer element open
- Warmer thermostat seized
- Satellite base pin contacts corroded
- Wiring loom connection at the warmer corroded
Try this first
- Visually verify the warmer plate gets hot under a fresh brew
- Inspect satellite base contacts for corrosion
Warmer elements and switches are wear items. We test resistance, clean or replace the contacts, and confirm it heats.
Bypass
1 codeE6 Bypass valve fault
The bypass valve isn't moving as commanded, or its timing has fallen out of range, so brew strength can drift.
Likely causes
- Bypass solenoid coil open or shorted
- Bypass valve seat worn (leak-by)
- Bypass orifice scaled
Try this first
- Compare brew strength against the recipe
- Inspect bypass output during a test brew
We service the bypass valve, recalibrate its timing through the service menu, and replace the cartridge if it needs it.
Electronics

On PrecisionBrew touchscreen models, the display has lost contact with the main controller, or the touch digitizer has stopped responding.

- Ribbon cable unseated

- Verify display ribbon connection if accessible
A display fault that won't clear needs the ribbon reseated, the firmware reflashed, or the display replaced.
E16 Programming lost / EEPROM fault
The controller has lost its programmed batch sizes, pulse profiles, and temperature offsets, so the brewer has fallen back to factory defaults.
Likely causes
- Backup capacitor or coin cell failed
- EEPROM write fault after a power event
- Recent firmware update reset settings
Try this first
- Re-enter the operator's batch sizes and profiles
- Run a controlled power cycle to confirm settings hold

Water
3 codesE4 Inlet / refill timeout
The fill cycle has run past its time limit. Either the inlet solenoid isn't passing water or the level probe rarely registers full.
Likely causes
- Inlet solenoid scaled or stuck closed
- Building supply pressure too low
- Inlet screen blocked
- Level probe failed
Try this first
- Verify the supply is open and the hose isn't kinked
- Listen for the inlet solenoid clicking
- Inspect the inlet screen
If the solenoid clicks but nothing flows, the valve or the inlet screen is blocked. We clear both and replace as needed.
E8 Flow meter no pulses
On PrecisionBrew models with a flow meter, the controller is getting no pulses while water is dispensing.
Likely causes
- Flow meter turbine clogged with mineral deposits
- Flow meter cable disconnected
- Brew valve not actually opening
Try this first
- Run a hot-water dispense to check non-brew flow
- Inspect the flow meter cable
Clearing a flow meter is straightforward. We free the turbine and recalibrate the flow.
Descale Required Descale interval reached
The descale counter has reached the interval set for your water hardness and brew volume.
Likely causes
- Descale interval genuinely reached
- Counter not reset after the previous descale
- Water hardness configured higher than actual supply
Try this first
- Run the descale procedure to completion
- Reset the counter through the service menu
If the alert won't clear after a proper descale, we check the counter reset and the water-hardness setting.
Sensors

The PrecisionBrew controller is seeing the tank temperature probe as open or shorted, so it shuts off heating to keep the element safe.
Likely causes
- Probe failed open or shorted
- Probe lead chafed
- Connector unseated at the controller
Try this first
- Power-cycle the brewer at the wall
- Inspect the probe lead for damage
An open or shorted probe won't recover on its own. We test its resistance and replace it on-site.
E3 Level probe fault
The tank level probe isn't sensing water where it should be, so the brewer keeps refilling without ever reading full.
Likely causes
- Level probe scaled (insulating from water)
- Tank actually empty due to inlet failure
- Probe wire disconnected
- Ground continuity to tank lost
Try this first
- Confirm water is reaching the tank
- Power-cycle the machine
Most level-probe faults trace back to scale insulating the probe. We clean or replace it and confirm continuity.

The maintenance counter has hit its programmed interval. The brewer keeps running but flags the alert until it's serviced and reset.
Likely causes
- Brew count or operating-hours interval reached
- Counter not reset after the previous service
Try this first
- Perform the sprayhead clean and descale
- Reset the counter through the PrecisionBrew service menu
If the counter resets but the alert comes straight back, the EEPROM isn't holding. We diagnose on-site.
Funnel Missing Brew funnel not detected
The funnel-detect switch is reading the funnel as missing, so the brewer won't start a cycle until it's seated.
Likely causes
- Funnel not seated fully
- Funnel-detect microswitch contaminated with grounds
- Switch arm bent
Try this first
- Remove and refit the funnel firmly
- Brush grounds out of the switch area
If the funnel is seated but the error stays, the microswitch needs cleaning or replacing.
