Marco error codes, what they mean and how to fix them.
This page lists the fault codes and service alerts you'll see on Marco coffee equipment: the SP9 brewers, the JET6 and BRU batch brewers, QwikBrew and MaxiBrew, ColdBRU, and the POUR'D cold-coffee systems. For each one you get what the machine is actually telling you, the usual causes, what to check first, and when it's worth calling a technician.

About these codes. Compiled from current Marco product documentation and our own GTA service logs. Capacity-only and minor configuration variants share the same controller and the same codes, so they're covered together here rather than split out. Updated August 2026
Tank
1 codeE9 SP9 brew temperature drift
Brew water drifted outside the programmed range during a cycle. Precision is the SP9's whole selling point, so any drift raises this alert.
Likely causes
- Element scale slowing recovery
- Temperature probe drift
- SSR cycling abnormally
Try this first
- Run a descale cycle if interval is reached
- Confirm probe lead is undamaged
We measure brew temperature at the dispense outlet against spec and recalibrate. If the probe has drifted for good, we replace it.
Heating
2 codesE2 Boiler heating timeout
The Ecoboiler or SP9 boiler hasn't reached its set temperature within the allowed warm-up window, so the controller cuts heating to protect the element.
Likely causes
- Heating element open or scaled to insulation
- High-limit thermostat tripped
- Element relay (SSR) failed
- Boiler under-filled at warm-up
Try this first
- Verify water supply is open
- Power-cycle and watch for normal warm-up
- Reset the high-limit if accessible
On Marco units this is nearly typically element scale or a tripped high-limit. We descale, test the element's resistance, and replace it if needed.
E3 Boil-dry / element overtemperature
The element's overtemperature protection has tripped, either from firing dry or from overheating. Heating stays locked out until the cause is cleared and the cutout is manually reset.
Likely causes
- Level probe failure allowing heating without water
- Element scaled to the point of overheating despite water present
- High-limit cutout failed in tripped state
Try this first
- Allow the boiler to cool fully
- Verify water level is normal before resetting
A boil-dry trip needs its root cause found before anyone resets it. We test the level probe, the element, and the high-limit before re-energizing the boiler.
Solenoid
1 codeE6 Dispense solenoid fault
On MIX, Ecoboiler PB, or SP9 platforms the dispense solenoid isn't doing what it's told: no flow, continuous flow, or a leak-by drip.
Likely causes
- Solenoid coil open or shorted
- Diaphragm hardened or seat worn
- Solenoid driver on the controller failed
Try this first
- Power-cycle the unit
- Visually verify the valve wiring is seated
We test the coil and replace the dispense valve. On most Marco models the valve is field-serviceable, so it's a quick swap.
Brew chamber
1 codeE8 SP9 brew chamber fault
The SP9 brew chamber hasn't homed or isn't sealing for the cycle, so the brew is aborted rather than pull an incomplete shot.
Likely causes
- Brew chamber seal worn
- Chamber drive linkage worn
- Home-position sensor reading incorrectly
- Coffee grounds binding the chamber
Try this first
- Power-cycle the unit
- Inspect the chamber for visible coffee buildup
SP9 chamber service is a Marco-specific job. We fit the seal kit and recalibrate the brew profile afterward.
Filter
1 codeE15 Friia filter cartridge exhausted
The Friia tap's filter cartridge has hit its rated capacity. Taste and clarity will slip until it's replaced.
Likely causes
- Cartridge actually exhausted
- Counter not reset after the previous replacement
Try this first
- Replace the filter cartridge
- Reset the filter counter through the service menu
If the counter won't reset after a genuine cartridge change, we check that the controller is holding the reset in memory.
Electronics
2 codesE10 SP9 / Ecoboiler firmware or EEPROM fault
The controller has found its stored programming corrupted, and profiles may have dropped back to factory defaults.
Likely causes
- Power interruption during a programming change
- EEPROM write failure
- Backup capacitor failed
Try this first
- Re-enter brew profiles or dispense settings
- Run a controlled power cycle to confirm settings hold
If the settings drop again, we reflash the firmware and replace the backup power source. We back up your profiles first.
E11 Touchscreen / display fault
On SP9 Pro and POUR'D Touch models the touchscreen has lost communication with the main controller, or the touch digitizer has stopped responding.
Likely causes
- Ribbon cable unseated
- Touch digitizer failed
- Firmware corruption after a power event
Try this first
- Power-cycle the unit
- Verify display ribbon connection if accessible
A display fault that won't clear needs the ribbon reseated, the firmware reflashed, or the display module replaced.
Water
3 codesE5 Inlet fill timeout
The fill cycle hasn't finished in the time allowed. Either the inlet solenoid isn't passing water or the level probe rarely registers full.
Likely causes
- Supply tap closed or pressure too low
- Inlet solenoid scaled or stuck closed
- Inlet screen blocked
- Level probe failed
Try this first
- Verify the supply tap is open
- Listen for the inlet solenoid clicking
- Inspect the inlet screen
If the solenoid clicks but nothing flows, the valve or the inlet screen is blocked. We clean both and replace whatever's worn.
E7 Dispense volume / flow meter fault
On MIX and Ecoboiler PB platforms the flow meter isn't counting pulses during a dispense, so volume control is lost and the cycle aborts.
Likely causes
- Flow meter turbine clogged with deposits
- Flow meter cable disconnected
- Dispense solenoid not actually opening
Try this first
- Run a test dispense to listen for the solenoid
- Inspect the flow meter cable
Clearing the flow meter is routine. We strip it, clean out the turbine, and recalibrate the dispense volume.
Descale Required Descale interval reached
The descale counter has reached the interval set from your water-hardness setting and dispense volume. It's a reminder, not a fault.
Likely causes
- Descale interval genuinely reached
- Counter not reset after the previous descale
- Water-hardness configuration higher than actual supply
Try this first
- Run the descale procedure to completion
- Reset the descale counter through the service menu
If the alert won't clear after a proper descale, we check that the counter reset and that the hardness setting matches your actual water.
Sensors
4 codesE1 Boiler temperature probe out of range
The controller can't get a sensible reading from the boiler NTC probe; it's reading open or shorted. Heating is shut off and dispense is locked out until the probe is sorted.
Likely causes
- NTC sensor failed
- Probe lead chafed or damaged
- Connector unseated at the controller
Try this first
- Power-cycle the unit at the wall
- Visually inspect the probe lead
An open or shorted NTC won't come back on its own. We test it against the resistance table and replace it on-site.
E4 Level probe / water level fault
The boiler's level probe isn't sensing water at the fill line, so heating is disabled to stop the element firing dry.
Likely causes
- Level probe scaled
- Tank actually empty due to inlet failure
- Probe lead damaged
- Ground continuity to the tank lost
Try this first
- Confirm water is reaching the boiler
- Power-cycle the unit
Most level-probe faults are scale insulating the probe. We clean or replace it and confirm continuity to the tank.
E17 Friia chilled water temperature out of range
On chilled or chilled-and-sparkling Friia taps the chilled water has drifted above its target, so cold dispense is disabled or pours warmer than spec.
Likely causes
- Refrigeration circuit fault
- Chiller temperature probe failed
- Heavy continuous draw exceeding chiller capacity
- Condenser airflow restricted
Try this first
- Verify the condenser airflow isn't blocked
- Power-cycle the tap unit
A chilled-water fault that persists means testing the refrigeration circuit. We quote before any refrigerant work.
Door / Cover Open Cover or service panel open during operation
On SP9 and POUR'D platforms the brew-chamber cover or a service panel is reading open, so brewing halts as a safety lockout.
Likely causes
- Cover not seated fully
- Cover microswitch contaminated
- Switch wiring loose
Try this first
- Open and close the cover firmly until the latch engages
- Inspect the switch for debris
If the fault sticks with the cover firmly shut, the microswitch needs cleaning or replacing.
Other
3 codesE16 Friia CO2 low or out (sparkling variants)
On sparkling Friia taps the CO2 supply has dropped below its working pressure, so sparkling dispense is disabled.
Likely causes
- CO2 cylinder empty
- Regulator output drifted low
- CO2 line leak
Try this first
- Verify the CO2 cylinder isn't empty
- Check the regulator output pressure
If a low-CO2 alert sticks around with a fresh cylinder, the regulator needs testing and the line checking for leaks. Routine work.
E20 Cleaning cycle aborted
A scheduled or manual cleaning cycle didn't finish. The unit flags it as incomplete and may lock out dispense until it's run properly.
Likely causes
- Cleaning chemical not detected or dosed
- Cleaning circuit blockage
- Power interruption mid-cycle
Try this first
- Verify cleaning chemical is present
- Re-initiate the cleaning cycle
If cleaning keeps aborting, the stage that's failing needs pinning down. We clear blockages or replace the sensor behind it.
Service Reminder Scheduled maintenance interval reached
The maintenance counter has reached its programmed service interval. The unit keeps running, but it'll keep flagging until the service is logged.
Likely causes
- Dispense count or operating-hours interval reached
- Counter not reset after the previous service
Try this first
- Perform the scheduled service
- Reset the counter through the service menu
If the counter won't reset after a genuine service, we check the controller is holding the reset in EEPROM.

FAQ
Marco error codes, frequently asked.
9 answers about resetting codes, recurring faults, firmware versions, and when DIY ends. If the recurring ones are descale or water warnings, start with the right Marco water filter.
Updated August 2026
What does Marco error code E1 mean?
Every documented Marco fault we see is listed above, with its meaning, common causes, and what to try before calling a technician. If the code on your machine isn't on this page, call us with the exact display string and we'll work it out by phone.
Can I clear or reset a Marco error code myself?
Sometimes. Many Marco codes clear after a power cycle, a completed descale, or a counter reset through the service menu. Codes tied to a hardware fault (failed sensor, blown element, board issue) will return immediately and need a technician. Each code above lists what's safe to try first.
Why does the same Marco error keep coming back?
A code that returns after a power cycle is signalling a real fault, not a glitch. The underlying part (sensor, heating element, valve, motor, board) needs replacement. Repeat codes are diagnostic gold for us, so call with the exact code and any timing or symptom pattern you've noticed.
My Marco code isn't listed. Why?
Marco updates fault tables across firmware revisions and model generations, and not every code is documented publicly. We see codes in the field that aren't in any published list. Call us with the exact display string and the model and we'll work it out from our service log.
How fast can you get on-site if I'm stuck on an error code?
Most calls in Toronto and the immediate GTA get same-day on-site response. Tell us the code and the model when you book and we'll bring the right parts on the first visit so the repair finishes the same day.
Do I need to be authorized by Marco to reset an error code?
No. We're an independent service provider, not affiliated with Marco, and we work on machines outside the manufacturer's authorized network routinely. That independence lets us service older or out-of-warranty machines authorized networks may decline, and quote transparently every time.
Is it worth fixing an old Marco machine that keeps throwing codes?
Depends on the machine, the code, and the cost. We give you honest math on this. If repairs are starting to exceed roughly 50% of a refurbished replacement and multiple major systems are throwing codes, we'll tell you it's time to look at replacing rather than running up the repair bill.
Will independent service void my Marco warranty?
If your machine is under the manufacturer's warranty, independent service may affect coverage depending on Marco's specific terms. Try the manufacturer's authorized network first. If their response is slow or they decline coverage for your code, call us and we'll service it on standard terms.
How many Marco codes are documented on this page?
18 codes are documented above, organized by the system they affect. The list is compiled from manufacturer service literature, technician forums, and our own service log. We update it as new codes appear or firmware adds new states.
