Error code reference

Mavam error codes, what they mean and how to fix them.

Mavam machines rarely speak in numbered error codes. The platform is diagnosed by symptom and by per-group service-menu checks, so this page lists the alerts, wear states, and platform-specific triggers that actually put a Mavam on our schedule, with what each one means and how it gets fixed.

About these codes. Compiled from Mavam product research and our GTA service logs. Updated August 2026

Boiler

2 codes
Cold group Group boiler under-temperature on one group only Warning

Every Mavam group has its own boiler, so one group sitting cold while the rest hold temperature points at that group's heating element, NTC sensor, or PID. It is not a platform-wide fault.

Likely causes

  • Failed heating element on the affected group
  • NTC sensor reading out of range
  • PID setpoint or tuning shifted for that group

Try this first

  1. Compare the affected group's display reading against the others.
  2. Power the machine off for 30 seconds and back on.
  3. Keep the healthy groups in service; the fault stays contained to one.
When to call us

We isolate the affected group, test element resistance, verify the temperature probe against a calibrated reference, and check the PID setpoint in the service interface. Most cases come down to a failed element or a sensor out of range, and per-group brew profiles survive the component swap. Call us.

Group scaling Boiler scaling on a single group Warning

Mavam's small per-group boilers are sensitive to water hardness and scale far faster than larger thermosyphon systems. The machine shows it through under-temperature alerts on the affected group, longer heat-up times, and weak steam where the steam circuit shares the path.

Likely causes

  • Small per-group boiler volume concentrating scale
  • Water filtration exhausted upstream
  • Unsoftened municipal feed on the supply line

Try this first

  1. Check the filtration or softener cartridge is in date.
  2. Time the group's heat-up against the others.
  3. Note whether steam weakens along with brew temperature.
When to call us

We pull the boiler through the under-counter cabinet and descale it, inspect the element for hard scale and pitting, and verify the water filtration upstream. Operators on unfiltered municipal supply should add a softener or scale-reduction cartridge. Call us.

Pump

2 codes
No brew pressure Group module not building brew pressure Critical

Each group runs its own pump, so pressure sagging on one group while the others hold steady points at that pump, the OPV, or a restriction between pump and group head.

Likely causes

  • That group's pump worn below spec
  • OPV stuck or drifted on the group module
  • Restriction between pump and group head

Try this first

  1. Confirm the other groups still build pressure normally.
  2. Power off for 30 seconds and retry the affected group.
  3. Check the building water supply to the machine is fully open.
When to call us

We isolate the group, measure pump output at the group inlet, and test the OPV under load. Both components are reachable from the cabinet without lifting the bar top, which keeps the diagnosis contained. Call us.

Pump chatter Pump cavitation or audible chatter on one group Warning

A distinct chatter or whine from one group's position in the cabinet, while the others run quiet, means air in that group's supply line or a pump reaching end of life.

Likely causes

  • Air drawn into that group's supply line
  • Low inlet pressure from the building supply
  • Pump reaching end of life

Try this first

  1. Run the group and listen for whether the noise fades as it primes.
  2. Check the building supply valve is fully open.
  3. Note whether the chatter starts only under back-to-back shots.
When to call us

We bleed the line, check inlet pressure from the building supply, and replace the pump if output measures below spec. Under-counter access makes the swap quicker than on most traditional machines. Call us.

Group head

2 codes
Group seal leak Group head leaking at the portafilter seal Warning

The group gasket and dispersion screen are the same wear items as on any commercial espresso group: they harden, deform, and start leaking under pressure. On a Mavam the group head also passes through the bar surface, so the through-counter sealing collar is part of the picture.

Likely causes

  • Group gasket hardened past sealing
  • Deformed dispersion screen
  • Through-counter sealing collar degrading

Try this first

  1. Wipe the group seat clean of grounds and reseat the portafilter firmly.
  2. Back-flush the group and try the shot again.
  3. Check for moisture at the counter surface around the group.
When to call us

We replace the group gasket, swap the dispersion screen, clean the group threads, and verify a clean seal with a portafilter. The through-counter sealing collar gets inspected in the same visit. Call us.

Uneven extraction Group dispensing unevenly across the basket Warning

One group channelling while the others extract evenly points at a partially clogged dispersion screen or a scaled water path immediately upstream of that group.

Likely causes

  • Dispersion screen partially blinded
  • Scale in the water path just upstream of the group
  • Internal flow restrictor scaling over

Try this first

  1. Back-flush the group with detergent.
  2. Pull the same coffee on another group to confirm the difference.
  3. Check your filtration is in date.
When to call us

We pull the screen, descale or replace it, and verify pre-infusion and brew flow with a naked portafilter. If the internal flow restrictor has scaled, the group line gets flushed back through the boiler and re-tested. Call us.

Steam

2 codes
Wet steam Steam wand weak, sputtering, or wet Warning

A wand that will not deliver dry steam traces to scale in the steam line, a worn steam valve cartridge, or low steam boiler pressure on the relevant group.

Likely causes

  • Scale through the steam line
  • Worn steam valve cartridge leaking past
  • Low steam boiler pressure on that group

Try this first

  1. Purge the wand well before steaming.
  2. Soak the steam tip and clear its holes.
  3. Note whether milk texture has changed gradually or suddenly.
When to call us

We descale the steam pathway, replace the steam valve cartridge if it is leaking past, and verify steam pressure at the wand tip. Mavam designed the wand to be rebuilt rather than replaced, and we carry the cartridge kits. Call us.

Wand dripping Steam wand dripping between uses Warning

Dripping from an idle wand means the steam valve is not sealing fully, almost typically a worn O-ring on the valve stem.

Likely causes

  • Worn O-ring on the steam valve stem
  • Valve seat wear letting steam past
  • Scale holding the valve off its seat

Try this first

  1. Open the valve fully and snap it closed once to clear the seat.
  2. Wipe and purge the wand, then watch whether the drip returns.
  3. Count the drips per minute so you can tell us how fast it's moving.
When to call us

We strip the steam valve, replace the seal kit, lubricate with food-safe grease, and verify dry shutoff across a dozen test cycles. Once the wand is reached from the cabinet, most are done in under 30 minutes. Call us.

Electronics

2 codes
PID fault PID display on one group faulted or misreading Warning

Each group carries its own PID controller, temperature probe, and wiring harness. A single misbehaving display is that group's electronics, not a platform-wide failure.

Likely causes

  • Temperature probe failing on that group
  • PID controller drifting out of spec
  • Wiring harness connection degrading

Try this first

  1. Power the machine off for 30 seconds and back on.
  2. Compare the display against the group's actual brewing behaviour.
  3. Keep the other groups in service; the fault stays contained.
When to call us

We swap the probe to a known-good reference to confirm the sensor, check the controller against spec, and replace the failed component. Brew profiles are preserved through any controller swap. Call us.

No power Machine won't power on after a counter-side event Critical

Mavam's main power and protection circuitry lives under the counter, where a surge, a tripped protection device, or a damaged input from a counter-side knock can take the machine offline.

Likely causes

  • Tripped protection device under the counter
  • Surge damage to the power input
  • Counter-side knock loosening the supply connection

Try this first

  1. Check the building breaker for the machine's circuit.
  2. Confirm nothing under the counter was knocked or soaked.
  3. Don't reset a breaker that trips again; leave it off and call.
When to call us

We test the supply at the machine input, check the main breaker and any in-line protection devices, and verify the per-group power distribution. Most cases resolve to a tripped protection device or a damaged power input. Call us.

Water

1 code
Stale water Off taste or stale water at one group Warning

One group dispensing stale-tasting water while the others run clean points to a stagnant water path: a boiler that has not been flushed regularly, or a stretch of plumbing between filter and group that has gone quiet.

Likely causes

  • Boiler not flushed on schedule
  • Stagnant plumbing run between filter and group
  • Exhausted filter cartridge upstream
  • Silicone tubing deteriorating

Try this first

  1. Flush the group generously and taste again.
  2. Check the filter cartridge's replacement date.
  3. Run every group daily, even the quiet ones.
When to call us

We flush the group's water path, replace the upstream filter cartridge if it is exhausted, and verify the dispense carries no chlorine taste. If the problem persists, the silicone tubing gets inspected for deterioration. Call us.

Other

1 code
Access blocked Under-counter service access blocked Info

Not a machine fault at all: bar build-outs and retrofits sometimes close off the cabinet access the original installer planned around, and the constraint only shows up when service is due.

Likely causes

  • Bar retrofit closing off the planned cabinet access
  • Equipment installed in front of the service panel
  • Counter modifications since the original install

Try this first

  1. Measure the clearance in front of the cabinet panel.
  2. Clear what can be moved before the visit.
  3. Send us photos of the access so we arrive with the right plan.
When to call us

We assess the access constraints and work with the clearance that exists. Where a proper repair genuinely is not possible without removing the bar top, we document what the operator needs to change before the next service interval. An honest answer beats a sloppy repair on a premium machine. Call us.

FAQ

Mavam error codes, frequently asked.

9 answers about resetting codes, recurring faults, firmware versions, and when DIY ends. If the recurring ones are descale or water warnings, start with the right Mavam water filter.

Updated August 2026

What does Mavam error code Cold group mean?

Every documented Mavam fault we see is listed above, with its meaning, common causes, and what to try before calling a technician. If the code on your machine isn't on this page, call us with the exact display string and we'll work it out by phone.

Can I clear or reset a Mavam error code myself?

Sometimes. Many Mavam codes clear after a power cycle, a completed descale, or a counter reset through the service menu. Codes tied to a hardware fault (failed sensor, blown element, board issue) will return immediately and need a technician. Each code above lists what's safe to try first.

Why does the same Mavam error keep coming back?

A code that returns after a power cycle is signalling a real fault, not a glitch. The underlying part (sensor, heating element, valve, motor, board) needs replacement. Repeat codes are diagnostic gold for us, so call with the exact code and any timing or symptom pattern you've noticed.

My Mavam code isn't listed. Why?

Mavam updates fault tables across firmware revisions and model generations, and not every code is documented publicly. We see codes in the field that aren't in any published list. Call us with the exact display string and the model and we'll work it out from our service log.

How fast can you get on-site if I'm stuck on an error code?

Most calls in Toronto and the immediate GTA get same-day on-site response. Tell us the code and the model when you book and we'll bring the right parts on the first visit so the repair finishes the same day.

Do I need to be authorized by Mavam to reset an error code?

No. We're an independent service provider, not affiliated with Mavam, and we work on machines outside the manufacturer's authorized network routinely. That independence lets us service older or out-of-warranty machines authorized networks may decline, and quote transparently every time.

Is it worth fixing an old Mavam machine that keeps throwing codes?

Depends on the machine, the code, and the cost. We give you honest math on this. If repairs are starting to exceed roughly 50% of a refurbished replacement and multiple major systems are throwing codes, we'll tell you it's time to look at replacing rather than running up the repair bill.

Will independent service void my Mavam warranty?

If your machine is under the manufacturer's warranty, independent service may affect coverage depending on Mavam's specific terms. Try the manufacturer's authorized network first. If their response is slow or they decline coverage for your code, call us and we'll service it on standard terms.

How many Mavam codes are documented on this page?

12 codes are documented above, organized by the system they affect. The list is compiled from manufacturer service literature, technician forums, and our own service log. We update it as new codes appear or firmware adds new states.
