Melitta error codes, what they mean and how to fix them.
When a Cafina or Melitta Professional machine hits a fault it puts an F-code on the display, grouped roughly by subsystem: boiler and heating in the F00s and F70s, the brew unit in the F10s, milk and cleaning in the F20s, grinders in the F30s, water and filtration in the F40s, drawers and trays in the F50s, and electronics in the F60s. Below are the codes we meet most across the Cafina XT and CT families, the cup, breakfast, and tower machines, and the Cafina Siebtraeger, with what each one means and what is safe to try before you call anyone.

Boiler
3 codesF01 Coffee boiler heating fault
The coffee boiler did not reach its set temperature within the allowed warm-up window, so the machine locks out coffee dispensing to protect the element.
Likely causes
- Heating element open-circuit or degraded
- Scale insulating the element
- NTC temperature sensor failed
- Safety thermostat tripped
Try this first
- Power-cycle the machine at the wall
- Check the visible safety thermostat for a trip
- Confirm the water supply is open
If the fault comes back after a reset, the element or the NTC is the usual cause. We test element resistance and sensor values on-site and replace whichever has failed.
F02 Steam boiler heating fault
The steam boiler did not reach pressure in time, so steam, hot water, and milk heating are all disabled until it does.
Likely causes
- Steam element scaled or degraded
- Steam NTC sensor failed
- Pressure switch out of calibration
- Steam-side Klixon tripped
Try this first
- Power-cycle the machine
- Confirm the steam boiler is filling without an air-lock
This follows the same diagnostic path as F01 on the steam side, and it is normally a single-visit repair. We test the element, sensor, and pressure switch and replace the part at fault.
F70 Steam valve fault
The steam valve is not actuating correctly, so steam-based functions are disabled.
Likely causes
- Scale binding the valve cartridge
- Failed solenoid coil
- Valve cartridge worn and leaking past
Try this first
- Power-cycle the machine
Steam valves are serviceable. We descale the steam pathway and replace the cartridge or coil, whichever is at fault.
Brew unit
3 codesF10 Brew unit position fault
The Cafina brew unit did not reach its commanded position in time, so the machine refuses to brew until it confirms the group is home.
Likely causes
- Grind buildup binding the brew piston
- Worn cam followers or dry lubrication
- Home-position sensor failed
- Drive motor weak
Try this first
- Power-cycle and watch the brew unit try to home itself
- Remove the brew unit and check for visible grind on the cams
On a high-cycle machine, F10 is usually seal wear plus dry lubrication. We service the brew unit end to end, replacing seals and relubricating, and confirm it homes cleanly.
F11 Brew unit motor overload
The brew unit motor is drawing more current than expected, so the controller cuts power to protect the motor and gearbox.
Likely causes
- Mechanical bind from grind contamination
- Worn drive gear
- Failed motor or motor capacitor
- Grind set too fine, over-filling the chamber
Try this first
- Check the grind is not set far too fine
- Look for grounds jammed at the brew chamber
F11 is mechanical. The standard fix is a full brew unit service plus a grind recalibration; we replace the drive gear, motor, or capacitor if that is where the bind is.
F12 Brew unit not detected / not seated
The machine cannot confirm the brew unit is seated in the chassis, so it disables dispensing as a safety measure.
Likely causes
- Brew unit not pushed fully home after cleaning
- Brew-unit presence microswitch contaminated
- Switch wiring loose
Try this first
- Remove the brew unit and refit it firmly
- Confirm it clicks into its seated position
If the alert stays up with the unit visibly seated, the presence microswitch is failing. It is a quick on-site replacement.
Milk system
3 codesF20 TopFoam / Steam Perfect milk system fault
The milk system is reporting a foam-quality or flow fault, so milk drinks are aborted or disabled until the cause is cleared.
Likely causes
- Air-intake bore clogged with dried milk
- Worn air-intake spring
- Air valve out of calibration
- Milk pump impeller worn
Try this first
- Run the milk cleaning cycle
- Check the air-intake hose is not kinked
A persistent F20 needs the milk module stripped and the air pathway recalibrated. That is standard service on this platform and usually done in one visit.
F21 Milk temperature sensor fault
The milk-temperature probe is reading out of range, so hot-milk drinks are disabled to avoid serving milk that is cold or scalded.
Likely causes
- Probe failed
- Probe cable pinched at the wand or module pivot
- Connector unseated
Try this first
- Clean the probe tip if you can reach it
- Check the cable for visible damage
This is a standard sensor replacement and a single-visit fix. We confirm the new probe reads true before handing the machine back.
F22 Milk pump no flow
The milk pump is running but the machine sees no flow, so it aborts the milk drink.
Likely causes
- Milk container empty or the suction tube above the milk line
- Worn pump impeller
- Air leak in the suction line
- Blocked intake screen
Try this first
- Check the milk supply and the dip-tube position
- Inspect the silicone milk hose for splits
If the line is intact and the pump still will not pull milk, the impeller is worn. We test the circuit and replace it.
Grinder
3 codesF30 Grinder dose timeout (left)
The left grinder ran past its maximum dose time without finishing the dose, so the shot is aborted.
Likely causes
- Empty hopper or bridged beans
- Worn burrs
- Coffee oils gumming the grind chamber
- Grinder motor weak
Try this first
- Check beans are flowing on the left hopper
- Tap the hopper to break any bridge
- Brush coffee dust off the grinder throat
If beans are flowing and the fault keeps returning, the burrs need replacing. We weigh dose against time and quote the burrs.
F31 Grinder dose timeout (right)
Same fault as F30, on the right BeanSelect hopper: the dose timed out and the shot is aborted.
Likely causes
- Empty right hopper or bridged beans
- Worn burrs on the right grinder
- Right grinder motor weak
Try this first
- Check beans are flowing on the right hopper
- Tap the hopper to break any bridge
Same diagnostic path as F30. We confirm bean flow, then test and replace the right-side burrs or motor if the fault holds.
F32 Grinder microswitch fault
The dose microswitch is not actuating reliably, so the controller cannot confirm the dose has dropped.
Likely causes
- Coffee grounds packed around the switch arm
- Bent actuator
- Failed switch contacts
Try this first
- Brush grounds out of the switch area
- Work the switch arm to confirm it moves freely
A persistent F32 means the switch needs replacing. It is an inexpensive, quick fix.
Electronics
2 codesF60 Touchscreen / controller communication fault
The display has lost communication with the main controller, so the interface may freeze or show a comms error.
Likely causes
- Display ribbon cable unseated
- Firmware corruption
- Power-supply rail issue
- Display module hardware fault
Try this first
- Power-cycle at the wall, leaving it off for 30 seconds
If the fault survives a clean reboot, we reseat the ribbon, reflash the firmware, or replace the display module, depending on what the tests show.
F61 Firmware update failed
A firmware update was interrupted mid-install, so the machine may boot to a recovery screen or refuse to start.
Likely causes
- Power interrupted during the update
- Corrupted update image
- Network dropped during an over-the-air update
Try this first
- Do not keep power-cycling it, which can complicate recovery
Call us for this one. We reflash from a known-good image through the service interface, restore the drink profiles, and verify the boot chain.
Water
4 codesF40 Water inlet timeout
The fill cycle did not complete in time, so the machine assumes no water is reaching the tank.
Likely causes
- Water supply tap closed
- Inlet solenoid clogged with scale
- Float-tank level sensor stuck low
- Inlet hose kinked
Try this first
- Check the supply is open and pressure is adequate
- Listen for the solenoid clicking on a fill attempt
If the solenoid clicks but no water flows, scale has plugged the valve. We clean the strainer and replace the solenoid where needed.
F41 Flow meter no pulses
The flow meter is not reporting during dispense, so the cycle aborts because volume cannot be measured.
Likely causes
- Flow-meter turbine clogged with mineral or coffee residue
- Pump losing prime or weak output
- Cable disconnected
- Brew valve not opening
Try this first
- Run a hot-water dispense to check general flow
- Listen for the pump priming
This is a standard flow-meter clean and pump test. We clear the turbine, confirm pump output, and replace the meter if it stays silent.
F42 Descale cycle required
The descale counter has reached its limit for the set water hardness and throughput.
Likely causes
- Genuine scale buildup
- Hard water without adequate filtration
- Counter not reset after the previous descale
Try this first
- Run the descale cycle to completion with the approved product
- Reset the counter through the service menu
- Check the water-hardness setting matches the install location
If descale alerts come back too soon, we test the actual water hardness and recommend the right filter and cycle for your site.
F43 Water filter exhausted
The filter cartridge counter has reached its programmed life.
Likely causes
- Cartridge at the end of its life
- Counter not reset after the previous swap
- Counter calibrated for harder water than the site has

- Replace the cartridge
- Reset the counter through the service menu
It is a quick fix if the counter resets cleanly. If it does not, call us and we will sort the calibration.
Sensors
4 codesF03 Boiler temperature out of range
A boiler NTC sensor is reading outside its valid range, so the controller cannot regulate temperature safely.
Likely causes
- NTC sensor open or shorted
- Sensor cable damaged
- Connector unseated
Try this first
- Power-cycle the machine
- Inspect any visible sensor cabling
This is a standard sensor replacement and a quick on-site fix. If a reset clears it, watch for a recurrence, which usually means the sensor is on its way out.
F50 Grout drawer counter / drawer missing
The spent-puck drawer counter has reached its limit, or the drawer is reading as absent.
Likely causes
- Drawer genuinely full
- Counter not reset after the previous empty
- Drawer-presence microswitch contaminated
Try this first
- Empty the drawer and refit it fully seated
- Wait for the on-screen reset confirmation
A persistent fault with the drawer seated means the microswitch needs replacing. We swap it on-site.
F51 Drip tray full or missing
The drip-tray float reads full, or the tray is reading as absent.
Likely causes
- Tray actually full
- Float stuck on residue
- Tray microswitch dirty
Try this first
- Empty and rinse the tray
- Clean the float cavity
- Reseat the tray firmly
If the alert returns after a clean empty, the float or microswitch is sticking. It is a quick on-site fix.
F80 Door or cover not closed
A door or cover switch is reading open, so the machine halts its moving parts as a safety lockout.
Likely causes
- Door genuinely not latched
- Microswitch contaminated or out of alignment
- Switch wiring loose

- Open and close the door firmly, checking the latch engages
A persistent F80 with the door closed is a switch fault. It is a quick on-site repair.
Cleaning
2 codesF25 Milk cleaning cycle required (HACCP)
Melitta's HACCP milk-hygiene timer has reached its threshold, so milk drinks are blocked until the cleaning cycle is run.
Likely causes
- Daily clean cycle skipped
- Cleaning detergent exhausted
- Previous cycle aborted and the counter not reset
Try this first
- Start the milk cleaning cycle from the operator menu
- Refresh the cleaning detergent
- Run the cycle through to completion
If the HACCP timer will not clear after a complete cycle, the counter is not resetting. We verify and reset it through the service menu.
F26 Cleaning cycle aborted / incomplete
A scheduled cleaning cycle did not finish, so the machine flags it as incomplete and may lock out drinks.
Likely causes
- Cleaning circuit blockage
- Detergent dosing pump not delivering
- Level sensor reading incorrectly
- Power interrupted mid-cycle

Can I clear or reset a Melitta error code myself?
Sometimes. Many Melitta codes clear after a power cycle, a completed descale, or a counter reset through the service menu. Codes tied to a hardware fault (failed sensor, blown element, board issue) will return immediately and need a technician. Each code above lists what's safe to try first.
Why does the same Melitta error keep coming back?

Is it worth fixing an old Melitta machine that keeps throwing codes?
