Astoria error codes, what they mean and how to fix them.
If your Astoria is showing an error code, this page explains what each one means and what to do before you call. The codes here cover the electronic and touchscreen controllers used on the Storm, Plus 4 You TS, Sabrina TS, and related CMA platforms. Simpler SAE and older legacy machines tend to show a symptom rather than a numbered code, so if yours isn't listed, describe what the machine is doing and we'll help.

About these codes. Compiled from CMA service documentation, dealer-network material, and our own service log. Codes can shift between firmware generations and between the Storm, Plus 4 You TS, and Sabrina TS controllers, so if yours doesn't match exactly, call us and describe what the machine is doing. Boiler
2 codesErr 03 Boiler heating timeout
The boiler didn't reach setpoint within the allowed heat-up window, so the machine gives up rather than run the element continuously. It often shows first thing in the morning after a cold start.
Likely causes
- Scale insulating the heating element
- Element degraded and no longer hitting wattage
- Sticking SSR or contactor not firing reliably
- Probe reading low, so the controller thinks heating is incomplete
Try this first
- Power-cycle and try a warm restart if you can.
- Check the descaling interval; two missed descales is enough to cause this.
- Confirm the outlet is dedicated and not shared with other high-draw kitchen equipment.
If the descale is current and the timeout returns at every cold start, the element or switching device needs testing. Call us.
Err 11 Steam boiler overpressure
The steam boiler has gone above its safety pressure threshold, or the pressure sensor is reporting impossible values, and the safety system has cut heating.
Likely causes
- Failed pressurestat or pressure sensor
- Sticking SSR or contactor leaving the element energized
- Seized vacuum breaker preventing pressure release on cool-down
- Safety valve already vented and needing replacement
Try this first
- Kill power at the main switch and leave it off.
- Do not reset and try again. If the safety has tripped, there's a real problem.
- Note any water around the safety valve.
This is a safety-critical fault. Call us before powering the machine back on. A vented safety valve doesn't reseal reliably and needs replacing.
Brew group
1 codeErr 06 Brew group lockout (no flow / no dose)
The controller commanded a brew on a group but didn't see the expected solenoid actuation, flow, or end-of-dose signal.
Likely causes
- Failed group solenoid coil (open)
- Blown solenoid driver on the controller board
- Pump starvation upstream
- Flow meter silent (cross-references Err 05)
Try this first
- Listen for the solenoid clicking when you press the dose button.
- If it clicks but no water flows, the problem is downstream of the coil.
- If it's silent, the coil or its driver has failed.
Coil testing and driver diagnosis is service-call work. Don't drive the solenoids manually from the board.
Electronics
3 codesErr 05 Flow meter not pulsing
The volumetric flow meter on the affected group isn't sending pulses during a shot, or the pulse count is outside its expected range, so doses overshoot or stop early.
Likely causes
- Mineral buildup on the flow-meter impeller
- Failed Hall-effect sensor in the meter
- Wire pulled off at the connector
- Water quality driving repeat meter failures
Try this first
- Switch the affected group to manual (continuous) mode if your operators are comfortable with it.
- Note which group is throwing it; several groups at once points at water quality.
- Don't keep reprogramming doses. The meter is the problem, not the programming.
The meter needs to be pulled, cleaned, and tested. Replacement is straightforward once the failing meter is identified.
Err 08 Dose keypad / membrane fault
The controller is seeing multiple dose-button inputs at once, or a stuck input on the keypad ribbon. It often appears after a spill on the keypad.
Likely causes
- Worn-through keypad membrane
- Liquid intrusion under the keypad
- Corroded ribbon connector at the controller
- Damaged ribbon between keypad and board
Try this first
- Wipe the keypad dry and check whether any buttons feel sticky.
- Don't keep pressing buttons to clear it; that just confirms the fault.
- Power-cycle and see if it clears at boot. Liquid-damaged membranes usually come back.
The membrane and ribbon are replaced as a set. Sourcing and fitting them is a service-call job.
Err 09 Inter-board communication fault
The main controller has lost communication with a satellite board, the display board, a group board, or an expansion module, and the machine can't operate safely until it's restored.
Likely causes
- Ribbon or RJ cable unseated between boards
- Water damage on a satellite board
- Failed satellite board
- Vibration loosening connectors over time
Try this first
- Power-cycle from the main switch.
- Don't open the machine to reseat cables yourself; there's live mains inside.
- Note whether the touchscreen responds at all; it tells the tech which board to bring.
A reseat-and-test fixes more of these than people expect, but it has to be done with the machine de-energized. Call us.
Water
1 codeErr 04 Autofill timeout / level probe
Autofill ran past its safety window without the level probe registering full, so the controller stops the fill to guard against a flood or a runaway pump.
Likely causes
- Scaled level probe reading empty continuously
- Failed inlet solenoid
- Inlet shutoff closed or low feed pressure
- A hidden internal leak draining the boiler as fast as it fills
Try this first
- Confirm the under-counter inlet shutoff is fully open.
- Power-cycle and watch. If you hear the pump running but no fill, stop and call.
- Look under the machine and in the drip tray for signs of a leak.
Level probes scale aggressively on CMA platforms, so this almost typically needs a tech to pull the probe, descale, and verify the solenoid.
Pressure
2 codesErr 07 Brew pressure transducer fault (Storm)
On Storm trims with brew-pressure monitoring, the transducer is reading outside its expected range during the steady-state of the shot.
Likely causes
- Scale on the transducer port
- Failed transducer
- Wiring fault between transducer and controller
- On profiling-capable trims, a stuck check valve giving misleading readings
Try this first
- Watch the panel gauge during a shot. If it agrees with the fault, the hydraulic side has a real problem.
- Don't keep adjusting the OPV to chase this; diagnose the transducer first.
A transducer swap and port descale is service work. The fault often clears after a port clean, so it doesn't typically need a new part.
Err 10 Brew pressure outside band / OPV drift
On Storm SAEP and Plus 4 You SAEP trims with pressure monitoring, brew pressure during the steady-state of the shot is outside the configured band.
Likely causes
- OPV / expansion valve out of adjustment (usually loose)
- Rotary pump wear
- Clogged inlet screen restricting flow
- Scale narrowing the brew circuit
Try this first
- Note whether shots taste off, under-extracted, channelling, or weak.
- Don't adjust the OPV without a gauge; it's a quarter-turn part.
- Check the under-counter water shutoff and any inline filter.
OPV calibration needs a portafilter gauge and a tech. Pump replacement is a planned visit if output is below spec.
Sensors
2 codesErr 01 Steam boiler probe out of range
The steam-boiler NTC temperature probe is reading open or shorted, so the controller can't trust the boiler temperature and locks heating out to protect the element.
Likely causes
- Failed NTC probe, open or shorted
- Broken probe lead at the boiler flange
- Moisture in the probe connector after a brew-circuit leak
- Scale buildup that has drifted the probe out of tolerance
Try this first
- Power-cycle from the main switch, not the standby button, and leave it off for 30 seconds.
- If the code clears briefly then returns, note the timing; it helps the tech.
- If it comes back immediately, stop cycling power. The probe needs to be tested.
If the code persists after a power cycle, the probe needs to be ohmed and replaced. On dual-boiler Storm trims the display names the probe, so bring that detail to the call.
Err 02 Brew group probe out of range
On multi-boiler Storm and Plus 4 You TS machines each group has its own NTC probe, and this code says one of them is out of range. That group locks out while the others stay live.
Likely causes
- Failed group NTC
- Broken lead near the group
- Moisture in the connector after a brew-circuit leak
- Probe drifted out of tolerance with age
Try this first
- Note which group is showing the fault; the display tells you.
- Keep using the working groups while you wait for service.
- Don't swap probes between groups to test, they're calibrated per channel.
The probe needs testing at the controller, and the PID offset re-baselined against a Scace device after replacement. Book a service call.
Other
2 codesErr 12 Eco-mode transition fault
The scheduled eco or standby transition didn't complete cleanly. It's common on Storm TS and Sabrina TS firmware with energy-saving scheduling.
Likely causes
- Power interruption during the transition
- Firmware bug in an older eco scheduler
- Operator schedule conflict, such as overlapping eco windows
Try this first
- Power-cycle and confirm the next transition runs cleanly.
- Review the eco schedule with whoever programmed it; overlaps cause this.
- Confirm the machine is meant to be in eco mode at the time you're seeing the code.
If the fault keeps returning across several days, the firmware needs reflashing. Otherwise it's informational.
Service Scheduled maintenance interval reached
A maintenance counter has reached its threshold, shots, water volume, descale hours, or filter life. It's not an active fault.
Likely causes
- Programmed shot-count threshold reached
- Descale interval timer elapsed
- Water-filter capacity counter elapsed
- Group-seal interval reached
Try this first
- Note which counter has triggered; the display tells you.
- Don't just reset the counter without doing the work.
- Confirm the hardness setting matches the filter that's actually installed.
Book the maintenance the counter is asking for. Resetting without servicing shortens downstream component life.

FAQ
Astoria error codes, frequently asked.
9 answers about resetting codes, recurring faults, firmware versions, and when DIY ends. If the recurring ones are descale or water warnings, start with the right Astoria water filter.
Updated August 2026
What does Astoria error code Err 01 mean?
Every documented Astoria fault we see is listed above, with its meaning, common causes, and what to try before calling a technician. If the code on your machine isn't on this page, call us with the exact display string and we'll work it out by phone.
Can I clear or reset a Astoria error code myself?
Sometimes. Many Astoria codes clear after a power cycle, a completed descale, or a counter reset through the service menu. Codes tied to a hardware fault (failed sensor, blown element, board issue) will return immediately and need a technician. Each code above lists what's safe to try first.
Why does the same Astoria error keep coming back?
A code that returns after a power cycle is signalling a real fault, not a glitch. The underlying part (sensor, heating element, valve, motor, board) needs replacement. Repeat codes are diagnostic gold for us, so call with the exact code and any timing or symptom pattern you've noticed.
My Astoria code isn't listed. Why?
Astoria updates fault tables across firmware revisions and model generations, and not every code is documented publicly. We see codes in the field that aren't in any published list. Call us with the exact display string and the model and we'll work it out from our service log.
How fast can you get on-site if I'm stuck on an error code?
Most calls in Toronto and the immediate GTA get same-day on-site response. Tell us the code and the model when you book and we'll bring the right parts on the first visit so the repair finishes the same day.
Do I need to be authorized by Astoria to reset an error code?
No. We're an independent service provider, not affiliated with Astoria, and we work on machines outside the manufacturer's authorized network routinely. That independence lets us service older or out-of-warranty machines authorized networks may decline, and quote transparently every time.
Is it worth fixing an old Astoria machine that keeps throwing codes?
Depends on the machine, the code, and the cost. We give you honest math on this. If repairs are starting to exceed roughly 50% of a refurbished replacement and multiple major systems are throwing codes, we'll tell you it's time to look at replacing rather than running up the repair bill.
Will independent service void my Astoria warranty?
If your machine is under the manufacturer's warranty, independent service may affect coverage depending on Astoria's specific terms. Try the manufacturer's authorized network first. If their response is slow or they decline coverage for your code, call us and we'll service it on standard terms.
How many Astoria codes are documented on this page?
13 codes are documented above, organized by the system they affect. The list is compiled from manufacturer service literature, technician forums, and our own service log. We update it as new codes appear or firmware adds new states.
