Boiler
8 codes060 Coffee boiler fill failed
Boiler 1 (the coffee boiler) could not be filled to its operating level. Heating is disabled to prevent damage to a dry element.
Likely causes
- Mains water supply closed or low pressure
- Pump pressure below spec
- Leak at the boiler relief valve dumping water into the drip tray
- Blocked inlet
Try this first
- Restart the system after confirming water supply is open.
- Check the drip tray for water that shouldn't be there (sign of relief valve leak).
- Confirm mains pressure at the supply line.
If 060 persists with confirmed water supply, pump pressure or the relief valve needs servicing.
061 Hot water / boiler 2 fill failed
Boiler 2 (hot water / tea boiler) could not be filled. Heating on boiler 2 is disabled. Coffee drinks may still work.
Likely causes
- Boiler 2 relief valve leaking
- Fill level sensor scaled or failed
- Water supply issue affecting boiler 2 specifically
Try this first
- Confirm coffee drinks still dispense (isolates the fault to the hot water side).
- Check the drip tray for water bypass.
- Restart the system.
Fill-level sensor on boiler 2 is a common service item. Book it.
088 Steam boiler fill timeout on initialization
On startup, the steam boiler did not reach minimum fill level within 25 seconds. The machine waits up to 4 minutes before failing hard.
Likely causes
- Water supply slow or closed
- Fill level sensor failed
- Internal leak in the steam circuit
- Pump issue
Try this first
- Wait the full 4 minutes before assuming the fault is permanent.
- Confirm the water supply tap is open.
- Check for leaks under the machine.
088 after waiting and confirming water supply needs a service visit.
501 Steam boiler temperature sensor short
Short circuit detected on heater 2 (steam boiler) NTC temperature sensor. The boiler can't be controlled safely.
Likely causes
- Failed NTC sensor
- Pinched sensor cable
- Liquid intrusion at the connector
Try this first
- Power-cycle.
- Don't open the head.
- Note any other faults appearing alongside.
Sensor replacement required. Technician visit.
502 Steam boiler temperature sensor interrupted
The opposite failure mode of 501: the sensor circuit is open instead of shorted. Same diagnostic conclusion.
Likely causes
- Sensor cable disconnected at the harness
- Failed NTC sensor
- Damaged wire
Try this first
- Power-cycle.
- Document the exact code (501 vs 502 matters for the part order).
- Don't open the head.
Same as 501. Book a service visit.
504 Steam boiler over-temperature
The steam boiler temperature went above 150 degrees C or 25 degrees above setpoint. Safety lockout. This is a serious fault that should not be ignored.
Likely causes
- Stuck heating relay (welded closed)
- Failed NTC sensor reading low while actual temp is high
- Failed safety thermostat (Klixon)
Try this first
- Power off from the main switch immediately.
- Do not retry without service.
- Note any visible signs of steam venting.
Over-temperature on a steam boiler is a safety event. Call us before you turn it back on.
509 Coffee boiler temperature sensor short
Coffee-side NTC sensor has a short circuit. Heating disabled, coffee dispensing blocked.
Likely causes
- Failed coffee-side NTC
- Damaged cable to the sensor
- Connector corroded by water intrusion
Try this first
- Power-cycle.
- Note whether 501 and 509 appear together (would indicate wider electrical issue).
- Don't open the head.
Coffee NTC replacement is a quick visit.
512 Coffee boiler over-temperature
The coffee boiler has exceeded 150 degrees C or 25 degrees above setpoint. Safety lockout.
Likely causes
- Stuck heating relay
- Failed NTC sensor under-reading
- Failed Klixon
Try this first
- Power off from the main switch.
- Do not turn back on.
- Document the code.
Same urgency as 504. Call us before reuse.
Brew unit
13 codes009 Brewing unit motor timeout
The brew chamber tried to move and the incremental sensor counted too few pulses. The motor stalled, or the encoder isn't reporting. Most common Franke fault we see.
Likely causes
- Grind buildup on the brew piston after a missed daily clean
- Worn or damaged increment sensor
- Brew motor at end of life
- Foreign object in the brew chamber
Try this first
- Restart the system from the main switch.
- Pull the brew unit, rinse under warm water, and clear visible grounds with a brush.
- Reseat firmly. Run a rinse cycle.
If 009 returns after a thorough clean and reseat, the sensor or motor is failing. Schedule a brew-unit service.
010 Brewing unit motor timeout (secondary)
Same family as 009. The motor failed to complete its stroke and registered too few increments. Different sub-cycle in the brew sequence.
Likely causes
- Grind set too fine, creating excess back-pressure
- Increment sensor intermittent
- Worn motor gear
- Coffee puck stuck in the chamber
Try this first
- Restart the system.
- Open the door, inspect for any visible puck stuck on the piston.
- Brush the brew unit clean and reseat.
Recurring 009/010 means it's time for brew-unit service before something breaks.
011 Brewing unit motor timeout (third stage)
Brew unit timeout during a different point in the cycle. Franke separates these by where in the stroke the timeout occurred, which helps diagnose whether it's loading, brewing, or ejecting.
Likely causes
- Worn brew piston seals
- Misaligned brew unit after a service
- Encoder or motor electrical issue
Try this first
- Restart, then clean the brew unit fully.
- Confirm the brew unit is fully home and locked.
- Note if the error happens at the same point each time.
Multiple 011 events in a day means we need to be there before tomorrow's service.
014 Brew unit increment transmitter direction error
The brew chamber was reported as moving in the wrong direction. The increment sensor is sending bad data, or the motor wiring is reversed.
Likely causes
- Failed or wired-wrong increment sensor
- Motor wiring fault after recent service
- Damaged sensor harness
Try this first
- Restart and observe whether the fault recurs on first cycle or after multiple.
- Don't open the brew unit yourself.
- Document the exact timing of the fault.
Direction faults are wiring or sensor. Technician-only.
027 Brewing unit locking mechanism fault
The brew unit is not locked into its working position. The machine refuses to dispense until it sees the lock confirmed.
Likely causes
- Brew unit not pushed all the way in
- Locking lever not engaged
- Failed lock-position sensor
- Lock mechanism worn
Try this first
- Remove and firmly reinsert the brew unit. You should feel it lock.
- Confirm the locking lever (where applicable) is in the closed position.
- Power-cycle.
If the brew unit feels properly seated but the code stays, the lock sensor needs replacement.
028 Brewing unit missing
The machine cannot detect the brew unit at all. Either it really is missing, or the detection sensor has failed.
Likely causes
- Brew unit removed and not reinserted
- Brew unit reinserted incorrectly
- Failed presence sensor
Try this first
- Confirm the brew unit is physically installed and locked.
- Wipe the area where the brew unit meets the chassis.
- Power-cycle after reseating.
If the unit is clearly installed and 028 persists, the sensor needs servicing.
030 Brewing unit initialization error
On startup, the brew unit failed to recalibrate to its home position. The machine cannot trust the position of the piston and refuses to brew.
Likely causes
- Brew unit was partially apart or misaligned at startup
- Sensor failure
- Motor not responding to initialization command
Try this first
- Remove the brew unit, inspect it, reinstall correctly, and power-cycle.
- Brush off any debris from the chamber and piston.
- Confirm the unit clicks home.
After a reseat, an initialization error that sticks is almost typically the sensor or the motor. Call us.
048 Brewing chamber open too wide
The brewing chamber opened wider than expected during the cycle. The machine cancels the current drink and recalibrates on the next product selection.
Likely causes
- Grind dose larger than the chamber can compress
- Worn brew piston seal
- Grinder calibration drift
Try this first
- Select a new drink. The brew unit recalibrates automatically.
- Check grind quantity in service menu 5.2.
- Run a daily clean.
If 048 happens repeatedly, grinder calibration is off and burrs may be worn.
049 Brewing chamber could not close
The chamber failed to close, usually because the grind dose was too high or the grind was packed too tight to compress.
Likely causes
- Grind dose set too high
- Grinders out of calibration
- Grind too fine for the bean type
Try this first
- Select a new drink to trigger recalibration.
- Check grinder calibration through the programming menu.
- Try a coarser grind setting.
Grinder recalibration is a quick visit. Book it before the burrs need replacement.
094 Brewing module possible leak
Sensors detected pressure loss during a brew cycle consistent with a leak in the brewing module. The machine flags it for inspection rather than blocking operation.
Likely causes
- Worn brew piston seals
- Worn O-rings in the brewing module
- Crack in an internal water line
Try this first
- Check the drip tray for unexplained water.
- Inspect under the machine for drips.
- Note whether the warning is intermittent or constant.
Brewing module leaks worsen quickly. Book a visit before it becomes a flood.
425 Brewing unit missing or installed incorrectly
Operator-facing version of the brew unit presence fault. Prompts the user to reseat the brew unit.

- Brew unit not reinserted after cleaning
- Reinserted incorrectly
- Lock mechanism not engaged
Try this first
- Remove the brew unit and reinsert firmly until it locks.
- Confirm any locking lever is in the closed position.

Should clear in 30 seconds. If not, sensor issue. Call us.
427 Grounds container missing
The grounds container is not detected. The machine blocks brewing until the container is present.
Likely causes
- Container not pushed fully in
- Container actually removed
- Magnetic detection switch failed
Try this first
- Push the grounds container firmly into position.
- Empty it if it's full before reinserting.
- Wait 5 seconds for detection.
If it stays on with the container clearly in place, the switch is failed.
604 Grounds container full
Internal puck counter has reached the rated capacity for the container. A few more brews are possible before hard block.

- Container actually full
- Counter not reset after last empty
- Door not opened long enough on last empty
Try this first
- Remove, empty, rinse, and reinsert the container.
- Keep the door open at least 5 seconds for the counter to reset.
- Confirm the prompt clears.
Only call if the counter won't reset after a proper empty.
Milk system
7 codes101 FoamMaster hardware fault
A hardware fault, usually a short circuit, has been detected on the FoamMaster milk controller. Milk drinks are blocked.

- Cable damaged or pinched
- Failed FoamMaster controller board
- Short caused by liquid intrusion
Try this first
- Power-cycle and watch whether the fault returns immediately.
- Do not open the FoamMaster.
- Check whether anything has been spilled on the unit.

104 Milk flow impaired
The milk flow meter is reading too few impulses. Milk is moving slowly or not at all through the FoamMaster.

110 Cooler right temperature sensor interruption
The right temperature sensor in the milk cooler is reporting open-circuit. Milk safety is at risk because the machine can't verify cold storage.

- Sensor harness disconnected
- Sensor failed
- Damage from a recent move or service

- Confirm the cooler is plugged in and running.
- Check the cooler temperature with an independent thermometer if you can.
- Note whether milk is actually still cold.
Sensor swap is straightforward but should be done before milk drinks go out.
112 Cooler left temperature sensor interruption
Same fault as 110, on the left sensor of the cooler. On dual-milk configurations this isolates the issue to one side.

- Sensor harness disconnected

- Don't open the cooler chasing wires.

336 FoamMaster communication timeout
The main controller hasn't heard from the FoamMaster milk controller within 10 seconds. Milk drinks are blocked.
Likely causes
- CAN cable to FoamMaster loose or damaged
- Wrong CAN ID set in the menu
- Failed FoamMaster controller
Try this first
- Confirm the FoamMaster cable is connected at both ends.
- Power-cycle the entire machine, not just the FoamMaster.
- Don't change CAN ID settings without service guidance.
If the cable looks intact and 336 returns, controller diagnosis is needed.
617 Milk container empty
The milk supply is exhausted. Affected milk drinks are blocked.
Likely causes
- Milk container actually empty
- Pickup tube not seated in the milk
- Level sensor misreading

- Replace the milk container with fresh cold milk.
- Confirm the pickup tube reaches the bottom.
- Don't overfill above the marked line.

623 Milk temperature above 8 degrees C
The milk in the cooler is above the food-safe threshold. Milk products may be restricted by HACCP rules.

- Cooler door not closing

3 codes551 Left grinder pulse error
The left grinder's pulse sensor is not reporting the expected dose-related signals. Grinder may run too long or stop unexpectedly.

- Failed pulse sensor
- Beans bridging in the hopper
- Foreign object jamming the grinder
- Worn grinder motor
Try this first
- Check the hopper and tap to release any bridging.
- Look for foreign objects.
- Coarsen the grind one step and retry.
If 551 keeps recurring with clean beans, the pulse sensor needs replacement.
552 Right grinder pulse error
Same fault as 551 but on the right grinder. Isolates the issue to the second bean type.

- If using single-grinder mode, you can route around the right grinder temporarily.

606 Bean hopper left empty
Position 1 (left rear) bean hopper is empty. Drinks using this bean type are blocked.
Likely causes
- Hopper actually empty
- Beans bridging above the throat
- Empty-sensor failure

- Confirm the hopper lid is closed properly.

Electronics
2 codes291 Touchscreen not responding
The touchscreen is not communicating with the controller. The screen may be frozen or unresponsive to taps.

- Loose ribbon cable
- Failed touch digitizer
- Failed display module

- Power-cycle from the main switch with a 60-second wait.
- Note whether the screen displays at all.
- Don't attempt to open the head.

302 Process PCB communication fault
The main controller stopped getting responses from the process PCB (the secondary board that handles brewing operations). Most machine functions are blocked.

Water flow through the coffee boiler is disrupted. The flow meter is registering too few or no impulses. Coffee dispensing stops.

- Pump output below spec

080 Tea / hot water flow meter fault
Same fault as 079, but on the hot water / tea side of the machine. Coffee usually still works.

- Try the tea / hot water dispense to confirm the fault.
- Restart the system.
- Check whether tea has been disabled in the programming menu.

601 System calcified / scale risk
Average water hardness measured at the boiler level sensor has been high for an extended period. Scale risk is elevated, and the machine prompts for filter replacement.

- Water filter exhausted
- Wrong filter type for actual water hardness
- Filter rarely replaced
- Hardness setting set wrong in the menu

- Replace the water filter cartridge.
- Reset the filter counter through the menu.

685 Cleaner solution empty
The milk-system cleaner solution bottle is empty. Cleaning cycles cannot be performed.

2 codes461 Door open
The machine service door is open. Brewing is blocked for safety.
Likely causes
- Door not closed fully
- Failed door magnetic switch
- Bent door catch after rough handling

- Close the door firmly. You should hear it click.
- If the door looks closed but the warning stays, the magnetic switch needs checking.
- Empty the grounds container if you opened the door to do that.
Magnetic switch swap is a quick fix if the door is clearly closed.
663 Drip tray full
The drip tray level sensor is reading full. Empty before more dispensing.
Likely causes
- Drip tray actually full
- Tray not seated properly
- Level sensor coated with coffee residue

- Empty the drip tray, rinse, and reinsert.

- Wait for the sensor to recognize empty.

Can I clear or reset a Franke error code myself?
Sometimes. Many Franke codes clear after a power cycle, a completed descale, or a counter reset through the service menu. Codes tied to a hardware fault (failed sensor, blown element, board issue) will return immediately and need a technician. Each code above lists what's safe to try first.
Why does the same Franke error keep coming back?

Do I need to be authorized by Franke to reset an error code?
No. We're an independent service provider, not affiliated with Franke, and we work on machines outside the manufacturer's authorized network routinely. That independence lets us service older or out-of-warranty machines authorized networks may decline, and quote transparently every time.
Is it worth fixing an old Franke machine that keeps throwing codes?
