Two beans, one mid-size Franke

Fast Franke A400 repair for Toronto and the GTA.

When an A400 stops mid-shift, two bean lines go quiet at once. We repair this twin-grinder machine constantly: FoamMaster foam gone flat, a grinder that will not engage on selection, a brew unit stalling on grind buildup, brew temperature drifting between shots, a fault code on the screen. Give us the symptom and the likely parts ride along on the first visit.

Franke · Mid-volume super-automatic

The A400.

The A400 is Franke's mid-volume super-automatic, stepping up to twin grinders and an optional FoamMaster milk module. Rated for up to 100 cups a day, it lets a mid-size office or small hospitality operator run two bean varieties, espresso and decaf, or a milk bean, without the footprint of the larger A-line. From the bench the twin-grinder calibration and the FoamMaster air-flow are where most of the attention goes.

A400 faults we diagnose

Common A400 faults, and how we fix them.

These are the A400 faults that actually book service calls, from FoamMaster recalibration to brew-unit overhauls, with the cause and fix for each.

Brew system & pressure 3 issues
!

Brew unit stalling mid-cycle

Worn cam followers, grind buildup, or a misaligned brew group. We pull the brew unit, clean every wear surface, replace gaskets, lubricate moving parts with food-safe grease, and verify cycle integrity across test shots.

!

Coffee grounds appearing in the cup

Brew screen torn or piston seal worn. We inspect both screens, replace any that show wear, fit a new piston seal, and recalibrate grind coarseness.

!

Brew temperature drifting between shots

Scale buildup affecting heat transfer or a drifting NTC sensor. We descale the brew circuit, measure brew water temperature with a calibrated probe, and recalibrate the temperature offset in the service menu.

Water, boiler & heating 3 issues
!

Slow heating or weak steam pressure

Scale insulating the element or element degradation. We descale, measure heat-up time, test element resistance, and replace the element if performance doesn't recover.

!

Descaling alert won't clear after the cycle

Cycle didn't run to completion or counter wasn't reset. We verify the descale ran end-to-end, manually reset the counter, and check the filter cartridge condition.

!

Water leaking from under the machine

Failed O-ring on an internal connector, brew unit seal leak, or a cracked drain-line fitting. We pressure-test the circuit, identify the exact leak point, replace the failing seal or fitting, and verify dry operation.

Milk & steam 4 issues
!

FoamMaster producing weak hot foam

Caused by milk-protein buildup in the foam chamber or a worn air-intake spring. We strip and sanitize the FoamMaster module, replace the spring and O-rings, recalibrate the air-flow setting, and verify hot foam density on each drink profile.

!

Cold foam profile inconsistent or watery

Either the cold-foam air valve is out of calibration or the milk cooler isn't holding temperature. We recalibrate the air valve, test cooler output, and verify cold-foam density across multiple cycles.

!

Milk pump won't draw from the SU cooler

Worn pump impeller, air leak in the suction line, or a blocked intake. We pressure-test the line, inspect the pump head, replace the impeller if flow is below spec, and replace suction-line seals as preventive.

!

Off-taste in milk drinks

The daily clean has been skipped or the cleaning cartridge is exhausted. We deep-clean the full milk pathway, replace the cleaning cartridge, refresh customer training, and replace the milk hose if it's stained.

Electronics, grinder & other 6 issues
!

Dose variance between left and right grinder

Burr wear or dose-sensor drift, often uneven if one hopper sees more volume. We weigh dose from each grinder across 10 shots, measure burr gap, recalibrate, and replace burrs as needed.

!

One grinder not engaging when drink selected

Failed grinder motor relay or a feedback sensor not registering. We test the relay, verify sensor signal, and replace the failing component. The motor itself is rarely the fault.

!

Touchscreen freezes after firmware update

Known issue on certain A400 firmware versions. We roll back to a known-stable build or apply the latest patch, then restore drink profiles from backup.

!

Franke fault code on display

We read the full error log, identify whether the fault is a sensor, relay, or board issue, and replace the specific failing component. Error log is cleared and the machine is functionally tested across all drinks.

!

CleanMaster cycle interrupted before completion

Level sensor in the cleaning cartridge reading incorrectly or a blockage in the cleaning circuit. We diagnose where the cycle is stalling, clear blockages, verify cartridge dosing, and replace the sensor if needed.

!

Cup placement sensor not detecting cups

Dirt on the optical sensor, misalignment, or a failed sensor. We clean the sensor lens, verify alignment, and replace the sensor if it doesn't trigger reliably across cup sizes.

Don't see your issue? Call (289) 217-3796 with a description of what's happening and any error codes on screen. We'll likely diagnose it before we arrive. And if the same fault keeps returning, that's scale at work. The right Franke water filter ends the repeat visits.

Franke A400

FAQ

Franke A400, frequently asked.

20 answers covering service, repair, parts, installation, warranty, and edge cases.

Updated August 2026

Can the A400 really run two different beans at once?

Yes, that is the point of the twin grinders and dual hoppers: espresso on one side and decaf or a milk bean on the other, selected per drink. When one grinder doses differently from the other it is usually uneven burr wear from one hopper doing more work. We weigh each side and recalibrate.

The FoamMaster hot foam on our A400 has gone weak. What fixes it?

Usually milk protein in the foam chamber or a worn air-intake spring. We strip and sanitize the FoamMaster, fit a fresh spring and O-rings, reset the air-flow, and verify hot foam density on each profile. A daily clean keeps it from creeping back.

One grinder on the A400 stopped engaging when we pick a drink. Why?

Usually a failed grinder-motor relay or a feedback sensor that has stopped registering, not the motor itself. We test the relay, confirm the sensor signal, and replace whichever has failed. The machine can run on a single grinder while the part is on order if you need it.

Our A400 touchscreen froze right after a firmware update. Is that fixable?

Yes, and it is a known issue on certain A400 firmware. We roll back to a stable build or apply the corrected patch, then restore your drink profiles from backup. No need to replace a screen that is only hung on software.

The brew temperature on our A400 drifts between shots. What causes that?

Either scale on the brew circuit interfering with heat transfer or an NTC sensor that has drifted. We descale the circuit, measure brew-water temperature with a calibrated probe, and reset the temperature offset in the service menu. Shot-to-shot stability is checked before we sign off.

Should we choose FoamMaster or EasyClean on an A400?

FoamMaster gives adjustable hot and cold microfoam for a fuller milk menu; EasyClean is simpler and fine where milk drinks are basic. We service both, and from a repair standpoint FoamMaster has more calibrated parts to keep clean. If yours has FoamMaster, the daily clean matters more.

The cup sensor on our A400 stopped detecting cups. What is wrong?

Usually dirt on the optical sensor lens, a knocked alignment, or a failed sensor. We clean the lens, check alignment, and replace the sensor if it will not trigger reliably across cup sizes. It is a quick fix that prevents a lot of misplaced pours.

Is an A400 worth repairing as it ages?

For most faults, comfortably. Seals, sensors, a grinder relay, a FoamMaster service all cost a small fraction of replacement. We only flag replacement when an aging unit needs several major parts at once, and we give you the math before you decide.

How much does a repair visit cost?

Flat rate for the visit, parts billed at their actual cost on top. You'll hear the rate when you book, and for bigger jobs we quote in writing on-site before any work starts. No estimate that balloons mid-job.

How fast can you get here?

Same-day. Call in the morning and a technician is usually on-site before the day is out; calls placed later in the day book for the next morning. Urgent breakdowns get priority routing.

Which areas do you cover?

The GTA and most of the Golden Horseshoe: Toronto through Mississauga, Vaughan, and Markham, out to Oshawa, Hamilton, and Niagara. If you're not sure you're in range, call and we'll tell you straight.

Do I need a service contract?

No. We work call by call. Plenty of customers put us on a maintenance schedule eventually, but that's their choice after seeing the work, never a requirement.

Are the repairs warrantied?

Parts carry their manufacturer warranty, and we stand behind our labour: if the same fault recurs, call us and we'll review it. Specific terms are discussed upfront on each job, not promised in marketing copy.

Do you repair on-site or take the machine away?

On-site whenever possible, which is most of the time. If a job genuinely needs the bench, like a full boiler rebuild or major electronics work, we'll say so before anything leaves your building.

How do I book a service call?

Call us or send the form on this page. We confirm the machine, the fault, and a time window the same day. If it's urgent, say so and we'll route the nearest technician.

What happens on the first visit?

Diagnosis first: we confirm the fault, tell you what caused it, and quote the fix before touching a wrench. Most repairs finish in that same visit because the common wear parts ride on the truck.

Do you carry parts or order them in?

High-wear parts for the platforms we service constantly ride on the truck. Anything else we order, usually next-day where suppliers allow, and we tell you the lead time before committing you to anything.

My machine is older or out of production. Will you still look at it?

Usually, yes. We service legacy machines for as long as parts can be sourced, and we're honest when a repair stops making financial sense against a replacement. You get the math, you make the call.

Are you cheaper than the manufacturer's service network?

Often, but that's not the pitch. We quote against the actual work, not a factory pricing book, and we'll tell you when a manufacturer warranty claim is the better route. Transparency is the value; the price usually follows.

Can you train our staff so this doesn't happen again?

Yes, and we do it by default on the way out. Half of repeat faults trace back to skipped daily cleaning or wrong routine, so the technician walks your team through what actually matters before leaving.
