Routine gasket wear after months of daily lock-ups. We back-flush the group with cafiza, pull the shower screen, fit a fresh group gasket, clean the oil off the threads, and check the seal across several test shots. A worn or dimpled shower screen gets replaced at the same time.
Coffee oils and fines clog the screen perforations and push the water to the edges of the puck. We pull the screen, soak it in cafiza, clear every hole, inspect the group face, and replace the screen if it's pitted.
Usually pump wear or a drifted expansion valve. We measure brew pressure at the portafilter with a calibrated gauge, reset the valve to 9 bar, and check pump output under sustained load. A pump below spec is replaced before recalibration, and we check inlet pressure in case a soft-water system is starving it.
A chattering pressure stat, or scale on the steam pressure port. We descale the steam boiler, replace the pressure stat, and verify steady pressure under sustained load.
A worn steam valve cartridge, milk-stone in the seat, or a tired O-ring. We rebuild the valve with a fresh cartridge and O-ring kit, descale the tip and pathway, and confirm clean shutoff against the boiler gauge.
Scale on the steam element, an undersized inlet line, or a failing pressure stat. We descale the steam circuit, test element resistance, verify inlet pressure, and replace a chattering pressure stat. Recovery time is benchmarked against spec before reassembly.
Mineral buildup in the flowmeter is the usual cause, with worn programming behind it. We pull and clean each flowmeter, reinstall, and reprogram the doses by weight to a 1:2 ratio. A worn meter is replaced before recalibration.
Steam migrating into the front panel corrodes the keypad contacts and ribbon connectors. We pull the panel, clean every contact, reseat or replace the ribbon, and confirm each dose button triggers reliably.
Worn pivot bushings, a dry spring, or a fatigued lever spring drop pre-infusion pressure below spec. We strip the lever, replace the bushings, grease the spring with food-safe lubricant, fit an OEM-spec spring if needed, and verify the pressure curve on a gauge.
A worn piston seal or a scored cylinder wall. We pull the piston, check the cylinder against a reference, fit a fresh seal kit, and verify clean pull cycles before reassembly.
On the connected super-automatic the brew unit and milk circuit carry most of the wear. We strip and service the brew unit, replace the seals, deep-clean and sanitise the milk lines and frother, and check the connected diagnostics report clean before we leave.
We keep older Gaggia commercial machines running after other shops have given up. Original-spec parts come from refurbisher networks, documented donor units, and validated aftermarket equivalents for gaskets, valves, and solenoids. When a repair stops making sense against the machine's value, we'll tell you straight.
On untreated GTA water the steam and service boiler scale faster than the spec sheet implies, and a scaled element holds power on longer to keep up, wearing it out. We strip and descale the boiler, test element resistance against spec, replace the element if it's drawing low, and pressure-test before the machine goes back to the bar.
Scale around the heat-exchanger sleeve shifts the thermosiphon balance and pushes shot temperature off target. We descale the exchanger, flush the group circuit, and confirm brew temperature at the group against a reference probe before signing off.
Usually a weeping fitting on the boiler manifold, a kinked drain hose, or a hairline crack in a brass elbow weakened by scale. We pressure-test the brew and steam circuits separately, dye-trace the chassis, and replace the fitting rather than just retighten it.
