Gaggia commercial coffee machine
Gaggia commercial coffee machine logo.

Milanese espresso, kept pulling shots.

Gaggia builds traditional Italian espresso machines on the lever-piston tradition Achille Gaggia patented in 1938. The professional range runs from the entry La Giusta and volumetric La Decisa up through the La Precisa and flagship La Reale, with the compact La Nera, the spring-lever La Dea, and the connected La Radiosa super-automatic alongside. From the bench they age in predictable places: scale on the elements, group gaskets and shower screens, steam valves, volumetric flowmeters, and on the lever, the spring and piston seal.

Gaggia faults we diagnose

Common Gaggia issues, and how we fix them.

These are the Gaggia faults that actually book service calls, from scaled boilers and worn group seals to drifting flowmeters and tired lever springs, with the cause and the fix for each.

Brew system & pressure 4 issues
!

Group gasket leaking or portafilter not seating

Routine gasket wear after months of daily lock-ups. We back-flush the group with cafiza, pull the shower screen, fit a fresh group gasket, clean the oil off the threads, and check the seal across several test shots. A worn or dimpled shower screen gets replaced at the same time.

!

Shower screen channeling the shot

Coffee oils and fines clog the screen perforations and push the water to the edges of the puck. We pull the screen, soak it in cafiza, clear every hole, inspect the group face, and replace the screen if it's pitted.

!

Brew pressure low or fluctuating

Usually pump wear or a drifted expansion valve. We measure brew pressure at the portafilter with a calibrated gauge, reset the valve to 9 bar, and check pump output under sustained load. A pump below spec is replaced before recalibration, and we check inlet pressure in case a soft-water system is starving it.

!

Steam pressure cycling high and low

A chattering pressure stat, or scale on the steam pressure port. We descale the steam boiler, replace the pressure stat, and verify steady pressure under sustained load.

Water, boiler & heating 3 issues
!

Service boiler scaling out or slow to recover under load

On untreated GTA water the steam and service boiler scale faster than the spec sheet implies, and a scaled element holds power on longer to keep up, wearing it out. We strip and descale the boiler, test element resistance against spec, replace the element if it's drawing low, and pressure-test before the machine goes back to the bar.

!

Brew temperature drifting on the heat-exchanger group

Scale around the heat-exchanger sleeve shifts the thermosiphon balance and pushes shot temperature off target. We descale the exchanger, flush the group circuit, and confirm brew temperature at the group against a reference probe before signing off.

!

Water pooling under the machine

Usually a weeping fitting on the boiler manifold, a kinked drain hose, or a hairline crack in a brass elbow weakened by scale. We pressure-test the brew and steam circuits separately, dye-trace the chassis, and replace the fitting rather than just retighten it.

Milk & steam 2 issues
!

Steam wand dripping after the valve is closed

A worn steam valve cartridge, milk-stone in the seat, or a tired O-ring. We rebuild the valve with a fresh cartridge and O-ring kit, descale the tip and pathway, and confirm clean shutoff against the boiler gauge.

!

Weak steam or pressure dropping fast under sustained use

Scale on the steam element, an undersized inlet line, or a failing pressure stat. We descale the steam circuit, test element resistance, verify inlet pressure, and replace a chattering pressure stat. Recovery time is benchmarked against spec before reassembly.

Electronics, grinder & other 6 issues
!

Volumetric dose drift on one group

Mineral buildup in the flowmeter is the usual cause, with worn programming behind it. We pull and clean each flowmeter, reinstall, and reprogram the doses by weight to a 1:2 ratio. A worn meter is replaced before recalibration.

!

Keypad or display unresponsive

Steam migrating into the front panel corrodes the keypad contacts and ribbon connectors. We pull the panel, clean every contact, reseat or replace the ribbon, and confirm each dose button triggers reliably.

!

La Dea lever return slow or pre-infusion pressure dropping

Worn pivot bushings, a dry spring, or a fatigued lever spring drop pre-infusion pressure below spec. We strip the lever, replace the bushings, grease the spring with food-safe lubricant, fit an OEM-spec spring if needed, and verify the pressure curve on a gauge.

!

Coffee leaking around the La Dea piston seal

A worn piston seal or a scored cylinder wall. We pull the piston, check the cylinder against a reference, fit a fresh seal kit, and verify clean pull cycles before reassembly.

!

La Radiosa brew unit jamming or milk system faulting

On the connected super-automatic the brew unit and milk circuit carry most of the wear. We strip and service the brew unit, replace the seals, deep-clean and sanitise the milk lines and frother, and check the connected diagnostics report clean before we leave.

!

Older Gaggia commercial machine needing discontinued parts

We keep older Gaggia commercial machines running after other shops have given up. Original-spec parts come from refurbisher networks, documented donor units, and validated aftermarket equivalents for gaskets, valves, and solenoids. When a repair stops making sense against the machine's value, we'll tell you straight.

Don't see your issue? Call (289) 217-3796 with a description of what's happening and any error codes on screen. We'll likely diagnose it before we arrive. And if the same fault keeps returning, that's scale at work. The right Gaggia water filter ends the repeat visits.

FAQ

Gaggia service, frequently asked.

20 answers covering service, repair, parts, installation, warranty, and edge cases.

Updated August 2026

Do you actually service Gaggia machines across the GTA?

Yes. Gaggia is a core part of what we service across GTA cafes, restaurants, and hotel coffee bars. There's usually a traditional Gaggia on the bench or a van parked at one. The whole professional line, the La Giusta, La Decisa, La Precisa, La Reale, La Nera, the La Dea lever, and the La Radiosa super-automatic, are platforms we work on regularly.

What's the most common Gaggia repair you see?

Scale, by a distance. Untreated water in this region puts scale on boiler elements, heat exchangers, group circuits, and steam valves faster than the spec sheet suggests. Most first visits are a descale plus whatever the scale has already worn: an element drawing low, a leaking steam valve, or a group running off temperature.

Can you calibrate temperature, pressure, and dosing on a Gaggia?

Yes, that's core to the work. We set brew pressure at the portafilter against a calibrated gauge, dial the expansion valve to 9 bar, and reprogram volumetric doses by weight to a clean ratio. On the La Dea lever we verify the pre-infusion curve off the spring, and on the La Radiosa we recalibrate the grinder dose and milk system.

Are you authorized by Gaggia?

No. We're an independent commercial coffee equipment specialist, and we'd rather say that plainly. It means we work on out-of-warranty machines, keep older Gaggia units running after the dealer network moves on, and quote against the actual job instead of a manufacturer pricing book.

My Gaggia shots have gone sour or bitter. Is that a repair or a technique problem?

Often it's the machine drifting, not the barista. Brew temperature creeping off the heat-exchanger setpoint, a worn group gasket channeling water, or pressure sitting wrong will all sour or flatten a shot. We measure temperature and pressure at the group, fix whatever's out of spec, and if it turns out to be grind or routine we'll tell you that honestly rather than sell you a part.

How does pricing work for a Gaggia repair?

Flat rate for the visit and diagnosis, which you hear when you book, with parts billed on top at their actual cost. For anything larger, a group rebuild, a lever service, or a pump, you get a written quote on-site before we start. There's no meter running while we figure out the fault.

What Gaggia parts do you carry on the van?

The parts the fault statistics call for: group gaskets and shower screens, steam valve cartridge and O-ring kits, expansion valves, level probes, and pressure stats, plus lever spring and piston seal kits for the La Dea. That covers most calls in a single trip. Boards, full pumps, and element sets are ordered per machine, usually within a business day or two.

Can you rebuild a worn-out Gaggia group?

Yes. A full group service covers the gasket, shower screen, and seals, plus a check of the group circuit and the heat-exchanger feed. On the La Dea lever that extends to the piston seal, the cylinder wall, and the spring. We measure before and after so you can see the extraction come back.

How fast can a Gaggia technician actually get on-site?

Same-day when you call in the morning, with later calls usually booked for the next business day. A cafe with a dead machine and a full room gets priority routing. Tell us the model and the symptom when you book and the van leaves with the likely parts already loaded.

How much does a typical Gaggia repair cost?

It depends on the fault. A steam valve rebuild or a gasket service sits at the low end; a pump, a board, or a full group rebuild costs more. You get the flat visit rate up front and a written parts quote before any larger work, so the final number never arrives as a surprise.

Can you service older or vintage Gaggia commercial machines?

Yes. We keep older Gaggia commercial machines running with original-spec parts from refurbisher networks, documented donor units, and validated aftermarket equivalents for gaskets, valves, and solenoids. When a repair stops making financial sense against the machine's value, we say so.

When is replacing a Gaggia actually cheaper than repairing it?

Rarely, on the current professional machines, since most of what fails costs a fraction of the chassis. It tilts toward replacement on a very old unit where the boiler is failing and parts are getting scarce. We give you the repair number and an honest read on remaining life, and you make the call.

What if my Gaggia is still under manufacturer warranty?

If the fault is covered, the warranty channel should handle it at no cost, and we'll tell you that on the phone. Plenty of what we actually see, scale damage, worn consumables, and cleaning neglect, sits outside most coverage anyway, and that's the work we take on.

Do you set up scheduled maintenance for Gaggia cafes?

Yes, and most cafes move to one after the first visit. A regular descale and seal service on a machine running hundreds of shots a day heads off the failures that close you mid-service. We build the interval around your volume and water, not a generic calendar.

Do I have to sign a service contract?

No. We work call by call, and the maintenance schedule is there if you want it, never a condition of getting help. Most operators put us on a routine because they've seen the work, not because they were locked into anything.

Can you handle water filtration for Gaggia machines?

Yes, and on this region's water it matters. Scale is the single biggest killer of Gaggia boilers and heat exchangers here, so we check your filtration on every visit and fit or size the right softener or inline cartridge for your volume. A proper water setup pays for itself in boiler and element life.

We run Gaggia machines across several locations. How does that work?

One booking can cover every site, with a single report listing what was done to each machine. Multi-location operators also benefit from pattern-spotting: when the same fault shows up across several bars, the cause is usually the water or the cleaning routine rather than the machines, and that's cheaper to fix once.

Will you train new baristas on Gaggia cleaning and dial-in?

Yes, and we do it on the way out by default. A lot of repeat faults trace straight back to skipped back-flushing or the wrong cleaning product, so the technician walks your team through daily care and basic dial-in before leaving. It's the cheapest repair there is.

Does the La Dea lever need different servicing from the other Gaggia machines?

Yes, the lever group is its own thing. Beyond the usual gasket and steam work, the La Dea has a spring-loaded piston that drives extraction, so the spring, the piston seal, and the cylinder wall all wear and need periodic attention. We measure the pre-infusion pressure off the spring and rebuild the piston when the seal starts to leak.

How do I prepare for a Gaggia service call?

Have the model and any code or symptom ready, and clear access to the back and sides of the machine if you can. If the fault is intermittent, a quick note of when it happens helps us a lot. Leave it powered unless there's water on the floor or a tripped breaker, in which case shut it off and tell us when you book.

About Gaggia

Reviewed August 2026

Gaggia, in brief.

Gaggia is an Italian espresso maker with roots in 1930s Milan, where Achille Gaggia patented the lever-piston group that gave espresso its crema. The professional range is now built and sold as Gaggia Milano under the Evoca Group.

Milanese heritage, the crema patent

Gaggia traces to Achille Gaggia, who in 1938 patented a spring-lever piston group that forced water through the coffee at high pressure and produced the layer of crema modern espresso is known for. Commercial production began in 1947 from a workshop in Milan, and the lever machines that followed defined the look of the post-war Italian bar.

Gaggia Milano under the Evoca Group

The professional business trades today as Gaggia Milano and sits within the Evoca Group, the Italian coffee-equipment group that also owns Saeco Professional and Necta. Gaggia Milano splits its range between traditional barista-operated espresso machines and a line of professional super-automatics, with manufacturing tied to the group's Italian and Spanish operations.

The traditional line and the lever

The traditional semi-automatic machines, La Giusta, La Decisa, La Precisa, and the flagship La Reale, share a common chassis philosophy: a service-boiler heat-exchanger layout, volumetric dosing, and per-group keypads, stepping up through display sophistication and LED-lit work areas. The compact La Nera covers single-group and compact two-group bars, and the La Dea keeps the spring-lever tradition alive in a single-group light-commercial machine.

La Radiosa and the connected super-automatic

The La Radiosa is Gaggia Milano's connected commercial super-automatic. It carries its own grinders and an automatic milk system, and adds WiFi telemetry that reports faults, sales counts, and machine statistics, with parameters adjustable remotely. It serves self-service counters, offices, and hospitality settings where there's no barista behind the bar.

Why a heritage platform still needs a specialist

Gaggia's traditional machines are deliberately serviceable, but volumetric flowmeters, heat-exchanger plumbing, group solenoids, and the spring-lever group on the La Dea all age in ways a generalist appliance technician won't read off a manual. The La Radiosa adds a brew unit, a milk circuit, and connected electronics to the mix. We've worked Italian commercial espresso for over 15 years, and we know where these platforms wear.
