La Marzocco · Under-counter modular espresso (volumetric)

The Modbar AV.

The Modbar AV moves the espresso machine under the counter and leaves only the brew tap on the bar. The boilers, pumps, and electronics live in a cabinet below, which gives cafes clean sightlines and a custom bar, with volumetric dosing and the saturated-group core feeding each tap, rated to about 300 shots a day per tap. On the bench the split layout is the difference: most diagnosis happens below, and the bar-to-module cable and cabinet ventilation join the usual group and boiler work.

Typical useSpecialty cafes with custom bar builds, hotel lobby programs, design-led concepts
CapacityUp to 300 shots per day per tap
Milk systemModbar Steam module (separate)
GrindersBring-your-own grinder (machine has no integrated grinder)

Modbar AV faults we diagnose

Common Modbar AV faults, and how we fix them.

Below are the Modbar AV faults we meet on real service calls, with the cause of each and what we do at the machine.

Brew system & pressure 4 issues
!

Brew tap leaking at the bar surface

The seal in the tap collar wears and weeps onto the bar. We pull the tap, fit a new seal kit, and verify clean operation at the surface.

!

Dispersion screen in tap clogged

Oils and fines clog the screen at the tap. We pull it, clean it in cafiza, and replace it if worn.

!

Brew pressure low at tap

Rotary pump wear in the under-counter module. We gauge pressure at the tap, reset the OPV, and replace the pump if it reads below spec.

!

Gicleur clogged on one tap

Scale or fines restrict the gicleur. We pull it from the under-counter module, clean it ultrasonically, and verify flow at the tap.

Water, boiler & heating 4 issues
!

Brew PID offset drifting

Scale on the brew element drifts the temperature. We open the under-counter module, descale, test element resistance, and recalibrate the PID offset.

!

Steam boiler pressure low

Modbar AV pairs with the Steam module. We descale the steam circuit and replace the element if it is drawing low.

!

Leak in under-counter chassis

We pressure-test, dye-trace under-counter, and replace fittings rather than retighten.

!

Auto-fill running constantly

A scaled level probe or a leaking solenoid in the module. We clean the probe and replace the solenoid.

Electronics, grinder & other 6 issues
!

Pre-infusion solenoid failing under-counter

A failing pre-infusion solenoid in the module. We replace it and verify the pre-infusion curve at the tap.

!

Volumetric dose drift

Flow meters in the under-counter module mineralize and pulse unevenly. We clean each meter and reprogram doses by weight.

!

Bar-surface control panel unresponsive

Either the cable between bar and module is intermittent or the bar-side controller has failed. We trace the cable, replace it if damaged, and test the controller.

!

Under-counter controller fault

We open the module, read the fault log, and address the root cause, whether that is a sensor, a solenoid, or the board.

!

Tap chrome pitting or finish wearing

Cosmetic. We replace the tap exterior with original-spec parts.

!

Under-counter ventilation insufficient, module overheating

Modbar modules need clearance to breathe. We confirm the install meets La Marzocco spec, add ducting if the cabinet is starving for air, and reset the thermal cutouts.

Don't see your issue? Call (289) 217-3796 with a description of what's happening and any error codes on screen. We'll likely diagnose it before we arrive. And if the same fault keeps returning, that's scale at work. The right La Marzocco water filter ends the repeat visits.

La Marzocco Modbar AV

FAQ

La Marzocco Modbar AV, frequently asked.

20 answers covering service, repair, parts, installation, warranty, and edge cases.

Updated August 2026

My Modbar AV tap is leaking onto the bar. Where from?

The seal in the tap collar wears and lets water weep at the surface. We pull the tap, fit a new seal kit, and verify clean operation at the bar. It is a contained job that does not need the whole under-counter module pulled apart.

The bar control panel on my Modbar AV is unresponsive. Cause?

Either the cable running between the bar tap and the under-counter module is intermittent, or the bar-side controller has failed. We trace the cable, replace it if it is damaged, and test the controller. The cabling is the usual culprit on a split system.

How do you even service a Modbar when the machine is under the counter?

That is the normal way these are built. We access the under-counter module to reach the boiler, pump, gicleur, solenoids, and controller, and only the tap work happens up top. As long as the cabinet is accessible, a Modbar service is no slower than a countertop machine.

Our Modbar AV cabinet runs hot and throws faults. Related?

Almost certainly. Modbar modules need clearance to breathe, and a tight or sealed cabinet starves them of air so they overheat and trip thermal cutouts. We confirm the install meets La Marzocco's ventilation spec, add ducting if the cabinet is too tight, and reset the cutouts.

One tap on my Modbar AV pours weak. Fixable?

Yes. It is usually a clogged gicleur in that tap's under-counter group. We pull it, clean it ultrasonically, and verify flow at the tap. If pressure is low across the board, we check the rotary pump instead.

Doses on my Modbar AV are drifting. Can you reset them?

Yes. The flow meters in the under-counter module mineralize and pulse unevenly. We clean each meter and reprogram the doses by weight, the same as on a countertop machine, just accessed from below.

Does the Modbar AV use the same parts as a Linea PB?

Much of the core is shared: saturated group, dual boiler, gicleurs, solenoids, and flow meters. The Modbar-specific parts are the tap assembly, its seal kits, and the bar-to-module cabling, all of which we carry or source for these installs.

We are pairing the Modbar AV with a Steam module. Do you service both?

Yes. The Steam module is the dedicated under-counter steam boiler that feeds a tap on the bar, and we service it alongside the AV: descaling, element and pressure stat work, and the steam valve in the tap. One visit covers the whole bar.

How much does a repair visit cost?

Flat rate for the visit, parts billed at their actual cost on top. You'll hear the rate when you book, and for bigger jobs we quote in writing on-site before any work starts. No estimate that balloons mid-job.

How fast can you get here?

Same-day. Call in the morning and a technician is usually on-site before the day is out; calls placed later in the day book for the next morning. Urgent breakdowns get priority routing.

Which areas do you cover?

The GTA and most of the Golden Horseshoe: Toronto through Mississauga, Vaughan, and Markham, out to Oshawa, Hamilton, and Niagara. If you're not sure you're in range, call and we'll tell you straight.

Do I need a service contract?

No. We work call by call. Plenty of customers put us on a maintenance schedule eventually, but that's their choice after seeing the work, never a requirement.

Are the repairs warrantied?

Parts carry their manufacturer warranty, and we stand behind our labour: if the same fault recurs, call us and we'll review it. Specific terms are discussed upfront on each job, not promised in marketing copy.

Do you repair on-site or take the machine away?

On-site whenever possible, which is most of the time. If a job genuinely needs the bench, like a full boiler rebuild or major electronics work, we'll say so before anything leaves your building.

How do I book a service call?

Call us or send the form on this page. We confirm the machine, the fault, and a time window the same day. If it's urgent, say so and we'll route the nearest technician.

What happens on the first visit?

Diagnosis first: we confirm the fault, tell you what caused it, and quote the fix before touching a wrench. Most repairs finish in that same visit because the common wear parts ride on the truck.

Do you carry parts or order them in?

High-wear parts for the platforms we service constantly ride on the truck. Anything else we order, usually next-day where suppliers allow, and we tell you the lead time before committing you to anything.

My machine is older or out of production. Will you still look at it?

Usually, yes. We service legacy machines for as long as parts can be sourced, and we're honest when a repair stops making financial sense against a replacement. You get the math, you make the call.

Are you cheaper than the manufacturer's service network?

Often, but that's not the pitch. We quote against the actual work, not a factory pricing book, and we'll tell you when a manufacturer warranty claim is the better route. Transparency is the value; the price usually follows.

Can you train our staff so this doesn't happen again?

Yes, and we do it by default on the way out. Half of repeat faults trace back to skipped daily cleaning or wrong routine, so the technician walks your team through what actually matters before leaving.
