La Marzocco · Under-counter modular espresso (electronic pressure profiling)

The Modbar EP.

The Modbar EP brings full electronic pressure profiling to the under-counter format. It runs programmable pressure curves per tap, driven by individual gear pumps and transducers in the cabinet below, with only the tap on the bar, rated to about 300 shots a day per tap. It is the modular expression of the Strada EP, chosen by design-led and competition-style bars. On the bench the profiling hardware is the wear and the diagnosis: the gear pumps, the transducers, and the controller, alongside the tap seals and the bar-to-module cabling.

Typical useDesign-led specialty cafes, competition-style under-counter installations
CapacityUp to 300 shots per day per tap

Modbar EP faults we diagnose

What goes wrong on the Modbar EP, and the fix.

These are the Modbar EP faults that book real service calls, each with the cause and what we do about it at the machine.

Brew system & pressure 4 issues
!

Brew tap leaking at bar surface

The tap collar seal wears and weeps. We fit a new seal kit and verify clean operation.

!

Dispersion screen at tap clogged

Oils clog the screen at the tap. We pull it, clean it in cafiza, and replace it if worn.

!

Per-tap gear pump worn, pressure curve flattening

Each tap runs its own gear pump for profiling, and wear flattens the achievable curve. We test each pump against the programmed curve and replace the gear set or full pump as needed.

!

Pressure transducer drifting

Mineral deposit on the sensor port or a failing transducer throws the reading off. We clean the port, test the signal, and replace the transducer if it is out of spec.

Water, boiler & heating 4 issues
!

Brew PID offset drifting

Scale on the brew element drifts the temperature. We descale under-counter, test element resistance, and recalibrate the offset.

!

Steam module pressure low

A scaled element in the paired Steam module. We descale it and replace the element if it is drawing low.

!

Under-counter leak

We pressure-test, dye-trace, and replace fittings.

!

Auto-fill running constantly

A scaled level probe or a leaking solenoid. We clean the probe and replace the solenoid.

Electronics, grinder & other 5 issues
!

Programmed pre-infusion curve not executing

A failed solenoid, transducer, or controller output stops the curve. We diagnose, replace the failing part, and recalibrate.

!

EP display at bar unresponsive

A cable fault or a controller hang. We trace the cable, hard-reset, and reflash if needed.

!

Under-counter controller fault on one tap

We read the fault log and address the root cause, whether that is a pump driver, a sensor, or the board.

!

Volumetric dose drift

Mineralized flow meters. We clean them and reprogram.

!

Under-counter cabinet running hot

Insufficient ventilation. We confirm the install meets spec and add ducting if it is needed.

Don't see your issue? Call (289) 217-3796 with a description of what's happening and any error codes on screen. We'll likely diagnose it before we arrive. And if the same fault keeps returning, that's scale at work. The right La Marzocco water filter ends the repeat visits.

La Marzocco Modbar EP

FAQ

La Marzocco Modbar EP, frequently asked.

20 answers covering service, repair, parts, installation, warranty, and edge cases.

Updated August 2026

My Modbar EP tap will not follow its programmed pressure curve. Why?

Something in the profiling chain has failed: the pre-infusion solenoid, the transducer, or a controller output. We diagnose each, replace the failing part, and recalibrate against a portafilter gauge so the curve runs the way you programmed it.

The pressure on one Modbar EP tap is flattening out. Cause?

That tap's gear pump is likely worn. Each tap runs its own gear pump for profiling, and wear flattens the achievable curve. We test each pump against the programmed profile and replace the gear set or the full pump as needed.

Shots on my Modbar EP read wrong on pressure. Sensor problem?

Often. Mineral deposit on the transducer port or a drifting transducer throws the reading off. We clean the port, test the signal, and replace the transducer if it is out of spec, then reload the profiles after calibration.

The EP display at the bar is unresponsive. Is the install dead?

No. It is usually a cable fault between the bar and the module, or a controller hang. We trace the cable, hard-reset, and reflash if needed. The under-counter hardware is usually fine.

How do you service a Modbar EP with everything under the counter?

The cabinet is where the work is. We access the under-counter module to reach the gear pumps, transducers, group, and controller, and only the tap and display sit on the bar. A clear cabinet makes the service straightforward.

Our Modbar EP cabinet is running hot. Problem?

Yes. The module needs ventilation clearance, and a tight cabinet makes it overheat. We confirm the install meets spec and add ducting if it is needed, which also keeps the electronics and pumps reliable.

Is the Modbar EP just a Strada EP under the counter?

Effectively, the profiling architecture is shared: gear pumps and transducers driving programmable curves per group or tap. The Modbar difference is the split layout, the tap assembly, and the bar-to-module cabling, which we service as part of the platform.

Can you re-verify our house pressure profiles after a repair?

Yes, that is part of the job. We log the curve on a portafilter gauge before and after the work and re-verify your reference profile before sign-off, so the tap pours the curve you built, not just a working one.

How much does a repair visit cost?

Flat rate for the visit, parts billed at their actual cost on top. You'll hear the rate when you book, and for bigger jobs we quote in writing on-site before any work starts. No estimate that balloons mid-job.

How fast can you get here?

Same-day. Call in the morning and a technician is usually on-site before the day is out; calls placed later in the day book for the next morning. Urgent breakdowns get priority routing.

Which areas do you cover?

The GTA and most of the Golden Horseshoe: Toronto through Mississauga, Vaughan, and Markham, out to Oshawa, Hamilton, and Niagara. If you're not sure you're in range, call and we'll tell you straight.

Do I need a service contract?

No. We work call by call. Plenty of customers put us on a maintenance schedule eventually, but that's their choice after seeing the work, never a requirement.

Are the repairs warrantied?

Parts carry their manufacturer warranty, and we stand behind our labour: if the same fault recurs, call us and we'll review it. Specific terms are discussed upfront on each job, not promised in marketing copy.

Do you repair on-site or take the machine away?

On-site whenever possible, which is most of the time. If a job genuinely needs the bench, like a full boiler rebuild or major electronics work, we'll say so before anything leaves your building.

How do I book a service call?

Call us or send the form on this page. We confirm the machine, the fault, and a time window the same day. If it's urgent, say so and we'll route the nearest technician.

What happens on the first visit?

Diagnosis first: we confirm the fault, tell you what caused it, and quote the fix before touching a wrench. Most repairs finish in that same visit because the common wear parts ride on the truck.

Do you carry parts or order them in?

High-wear parts for the platforms we service constantly ride on the truck. Anything else we order, usually next-day where suppliers allow, and we tell you the lead time before committing you to anything.

My machine is older or out of production. Will you still look at it?

Usually, yes. We service legacy machines for as long as parts can be sourced, and we're honest when a repair stops making financial sense against a replacement. You get the math, you make the call.

Are you cheaper than the manufacturer's service network?

Often, but that's not the pitch. We quote against the actual work, not a factory pricing book, and we'll tell you when a manufacturer warranty claim is the better route. Transparency is the value; the price usually follows.

Can you train our staff so this doesn't happen again?

Yes, and we do it by default on the way out. Half of repeat faults trace back to skipped daily cleaning or wrong routine, so the technician walks your team through what actually matters before leaving.
