Rocket's commercial machines signal trouble through the PID display, the pressure gauges, and the way the shot pours, rather than through a long list of numbered error codes. This page covers the service triggers and fault patterns we see on the commercial range, from the R 9V and R 9 through the RE Doppia and RE A Timer to the Boxer family. For each one: what the machine is telling you, and what the fix involves.

The two boilers run their own PID control, so one can drift while the other holds setpoint. Drift usually appears 12 to 18 months in, once scale has insulated the brew element and the controller starts compensating for readings it can no longer trust. You notice it as shot temperature wandering while steam stays normal, or the reverse.
Long warm-ups, steam that fades mid-pitcher, and PID cycling that rarely settles all say the same thing: scale has built up inside the boilers. Toronto-area water does this quickly once a softener stops being maintained.
The display is reporting what a failing NTC sensor or a corroded controller connection feeds it, so the numbers stop matching reality. Steam migrating onto the controller contacts is the usual corrosion source. Take the complaint seriously even if the coffee still tastes right; the display usually flags this fault before pour quality does.
Drips down the diffuser during the shot mean the group gasket has compressed past sealing. It takes thousands of portafilter lock-ups to get there, so on a busy bar this is normal wear, not damage.
There's no controller alert for this one; the cup is the alarm. Scale and coffee oils blind the screen until the puck stops receiving even flow, and shots start channeling or running weak.
The Boxer's pre-infusion runs on line pressure and brew solenoid timing, so a flat ramp or a missing infusion phase points to inlet pressure or the solenoid rather than the pump. Baristas usually report it as the curve no longer matching the profile they're used to.
The brew gauge sagging below 9 bar under load, or wandering during a sustained extraction, means the rotary pump is wearing or the OPV has drifted. Single shots may still look fine; the fault shows under back-to-back extraction.
When the joystick catches mid-travel or wanders back instead of snapping closed, the pivot bushing has worn. It's a feel fault first; left alone it becomes steam that won't fully shut off.
One wand going weak while the other steams normally narrows the fault to that wand's path: scale in the circuit, a partially blocked tip, or a worn valve cartridge. Boiler pressure is fine; the restriction is local.
Shot volumes varying cycle to cycle mean the flow meters are miscounting. Mineral deposit coats the pulse wheels until the count turns noisy, and the timer faithfully doses to the bad numbers.
The machine gives no alert for this; the puddle is the symptom. On the Boxer the usual sources are the boiler manifold, a brass fitting weakened by scale, or the brew solenoid seat.

Sometimes. Many Rocket Espresso codes clear after a power cycle, a completed descale, or a counter reset through the service menu. Codes tied to a hardware fault (failed sensor, blown element, board issue) will return immediately and need a technician. Each code above lists what's safe to try first.
A code that returns after a power cycle is signalling a real fault, not a glitch. The underlying part (sensor, heating element, valve, motor, board) needs replacement. Repeat codes are diagnostic gold for us, so call with the exact code and any timing or symptom pattern you've noticed.
Rocket Espresso updates fault tables across firmware revisions and model generations, and not every code is documented publicly. We see codes in the field that aren't in any published list. Call us with the exact display string and the model and we'll work it out from our service log.
