Water filtration & cartridges
Cafection's install manual is explicit that water filtration is the operator's choice, there's no Cafection-branded cartridge, and the warranty position requires 'approved water filter installation' without naming the brand. The reverse-French-press brew group, the dual-grind hopper assembly, and the milk system on the Symbol/Emblem/Total 1/Encore platforms all suffer when water is hard: brew-group seal life drops, milk circuit calcifies, and brew temperature stability deteriorates.
We'll measure your water and size the cartridge to your machine.

Our recommendation
Cafection water treatment is dealer-installed upstream, an in-line cartridge between the building supply and the machine inlet, sized to your daily volume and dialled to local hardness. The machine doesn't track it, so the swap lives on a scheduled PM, not a warning light.

GTA city × Cafection schedule
Cartridge capacity is rated at 10°dKH. Local GTA hardness varies, so the same cartridge runs longer in soft Toronto water than in hard Hamilton water. Find your city, get your swap interval.
| GTA city | Local hardness | Class | Suggested swap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto | Moderate | 6-9 months | |
| Mississauga | Moderate | 6-9 months | |
| Etobicoke | Moderate | 6-9 months | |
| North York | Moderate | 6-9 months | |
| Oakville | Moderate | 5-7 months | |
| Brampton | Elevated | 5-7 months | |
| Burlington | Elevated | 5-7 months | |
| Vaughan | Hard | 4-6 months | |
| Markham | Hard | 4-6 months | |
| Hamilton | Severe | 3-5 months |
Intervals assume a single cartridge sized to typical site volume. Capacity-tracked PM beats calendar-only PM, we measure feed water at commissioning and tune your specific schedule from there. Hardness data: municipal water-quality reports, updated annually.
When to swap your cartridge
Cartridge exhaustion shows up well before the machine actually fails. Tick anything you're seeing right now and we'll read the pattern.
Common Cafection filter problems

Replace seals, descale group, confirm upstream filter is installed and current.
Scale + milk-protein build-up in the steam path
Run milk-clean + descale routines, rebuild milk circuit, install or upgrade upstream filter.
What happens if you skip Cafection filtration
Nothing looks wrong for months, which is exactly why unfiltered machines fail early. Here's how the damage escalates.
No visible signs. Scale begins precipitating onto the heating element and brew boiler. Cup quality unchanged.
Visible scale at the steam tip and dispense spout. Heat-up time creeps past baseline. Carbon stage exhausts; cup tastes flat or chlorinated.
Milk foam quality degrades. Brew-temperature stability drifts as boiler insulation worsens. Relief valves start sticking. Service-call frequency climbs.
Heating-element failure becomes common. Brew-group reseal cycles shorten. Pinhole leaks in boiler tubing. Warranty void from documented scale damage.
Catastrophic component failure on a 12-year platform. The repair-vs-replace tipping point hits a decade earlier than it should have.
Cafection on site
Our Cafection filter service
We commission Cafection OCS sites with a BWT Bestmax or 3M HF cartridge sized to the route's expected volume, mount it inside the cabinet on a bracket, and put it on the route's PM schedule so the OCS tech swaps it on time.
FAQ

Cafection doesn't ship with a proprietary cartridge, water treatment is dealer-installed. We standardize on BWT Bestmax M / L or 3M HF20-MS / HF25-MS sized to your daily volume. See the upstream systems table above.
Cartridge capacity is rated at 10°dKH. In moderate-hardness Toronto / Mississauga water, expect 9 to 12 months on a properly-sized cartridge. In harder York Region and Hamilton water, drop to 6 to 9 months. The full city-by-city schedule is in the GTA schedule table above.
Cafection doesn't mandate a specific brand but requires water in spec (typically 4-8°dH after the cartridge). Most installs default to BWT. We document the install for warranty traceability.
Between the building's water supply shutoff and the machine's inlet, usually mounted on the wall under a counter, with a dedicated shut-off valve and a pressure-relief loop. The cartridge head holds the calibrated bypass dial; the cartridge itself screws into the head. Service is a 5-minute cartridge swap without touching the machine itself.
Yes if sized correctly, Everpure 7CB5-S and the larger BWT Bestmax XL are rated for multi-brewer feeds in office and foodservice manifolds. Beyond two espresso machines or two batch brewers, you're better off stepping up to a sized RO loop with magnesium remineralization. A single small cartridge feeding three high-volume machines will exhaust on capacity inside a quarter.
Yes for the platforms we work on most, BWT Bestmax M/L/XL, Pentair Everpure Claris Ultra, Jura CLARIS Pro Smart, Saeco AquaClean CA6903, WMF AquaBasic V/M/XL, and Curtis CSC5CC00/CSC10CC00 ride on the truck. Less common cartridges (some Optipure tiers, Elektra Kwts factory softener, Melitta Cafina-branded) are ordered ahead of the visit so we land with the right part on the first trip.
Yes. We commission with the install date logged against the cartridge's capacity rating and the site's measured daily volume. Our PM schedule lands cartridge swaps before exhaustion, descales the machine when the cartridge is being changed (so scale never reaches the boiler), and sends you the service log so you have warranty traceability for the manufacturer.
Cartridge cost varies by tier, a single BWT Bestmax Premium L runs around $180 to $230 CAD, an Everpure Claris Ultra 500 sits in the same range. Installation labour on a new upstream loop is typically 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on plumbing access. Routine cartridge swaps on an existing head are a 15-minute visit, usually folded into a PM call to save you a separate truck roll. We quote in writing before any work.
By the numbers
Tech corridor office in Markham. Our machine throws an error code, I send a photo, they tell me what it is on the phone, often without dispatching. That kind of help is rare.
We measure feed-water hardness on every install, dial the bypass to the manufacturer window, and put cartridges on capacity-tracked PM so nothing scales the boiler.
