American batch brewers, kept pouring.

Bunn machines are the workhorses of North American coffee service. The platform barely changes: a hot-water tank, a sprayhead, a brew valve, and a decanter or thermal server, the architecture behind most commercial drip coffee since the 1950s. That simplicity is why they run ten to fifteen years in restaurants, offices, and convenience stores. The wear is predictable, scale in the tank and sprayhead, a tired brew valve, warmer elements that open, so the ones serviced on schedule keep pouring and the ones that aren't drift off temperature.

Bunn faults we diagnose

Common Bunn issues, and how we fix them.

These are the Bunn faults that actually book service calls, from scaled sprayheads to dead heating elements, with the cause and the fix for each one.

Brew system & pressure 3 issues
!

Weak or uneven coffee from clogged sprayhead

Mineral scale plugs the sprayhead holes, so extraction channels and the coffee goes weak even when everything else is healthy. We pull the sprayhead, soak it in descaler, clear each hole, confirm an even spray pattern across the basket, and check the dispersion tube above it for partial blockage. On Infusion Series machines we also re-verify the pulse-brew timing, since restricted flow throws it off.

!

Brew valve solenoid not opening, not closing, or leaking past

The brew valve solenoid is the hardest-working part on a Bunn brewer, so it is a common failure at busy sites. Symptoms run from no brew flow at all to a slow drip into the decanter between cycles. We test coil resistance, inspect the diaphragm and seat, and replace the valve as an assembly. Most are stocked on the truck for a same-visit fix.

!

Coffee tasting weak or strong despite no recipe change

Bunn brewers use a bypass valve that splits water between the sprayhead and a bypass path to set brew strength. When the bypass spring fatigues or the orifice scales over, the ratio drifts and the coffee tastes off. We measure bypass flow against spec, clean or replace the valve, and re-dial the brew ratio on the operator's own coffee with a refractometer where it helps.

Water, boiler & heating 5 issues
!

Coffee not hot enough or long recovery between brews

Scale on the heating element insulates it from the water, so the tank recovers slowly and brew temperature drifts below the 195 to 205°F target. We drain and descale the tank, inspect the element for hard scale or pitting, and replace it if performance does not return to spec. The thermostat is checked against a calibrated probe before we close up.

!

Tank not filling or fills extremely slowly

This traces to a clogged inlet line, a failed water inlet solenoid, or a stuck float or level probe. We test inlet pressure at the supply, actuate the solenoid by hand, and clean or replace the level probe. On older Bunn machines with mechanical floats, we replace the float-stem seal, a common failure around the 5-to-7-year mark.

!

Decanter warmer plate burned out or only one warmer working

Warmer elements are wear items; they cycle thousands of times a year and eventually open. We test each warmer's resistance, replace the failed element and any seized switch, and confirm the warmer thermostat is closing at the right temperature. A decanter that boils over usually means a stuck-on warmer thermostat, not the element.

!

Filter basket overflow or grounds in the decanter

This is almost typically a grind-size mismatch, a paper filter collapsing under the sprayhead, or a sprayhead delivering water to one side of the basket. We check the spray pattern, move the operator to the correct Bunn-spec paper filter (flat-bottom, not basket-shape on most models), and recommend a grind adjustment. If the overflow persists, we confirm brew flow is not running over the spec rate.

!

Descaling done but the machine still performs poorly

Often the descale was incomplete. Bunn tanks have geometry that traps scale in corners and around the element, and a single citric flush will not dissolve heavy buildup. We run a manual descale with the element accessible, mechanically remove the hard scale, and recommend a filter or softener upstream. Scale comes back within months if the incoming water is not conditioned.

Electronics, grinder & other 4 issues
!

BrewWISE / Infusion Series display showing error or fault code

We read the full error log through the BrewWISE service menu and work out whether the fault is a sensor, a relay, the controller board, or a temperature excursion that has already cleared, then fix the root cause. Common entries are tank-probe open-circuit, brew-counter overflow, and sprayhead-pressure errors. The log is cleared and the machine functionally tested before we leave.

!

Programmed batch sizes lost or brew profiles reset after power outage

Older BrewWISE boards lose their programming when the backup capacitor or coin cell fails, which gets common past the five-year mark. We reprogram the batch sizes, pulse-brew profiles, and water-temperature offsets, then replace the backup power source so the settings hold through the next outage.

!

Thermal server or airpot not holding temperature, leaks, or won't dispense

Vacuum-insulated servers lose their seal over years of being dropped, and dispense valves clog with coffee residue. We pressure-test the vacuum, replace the dispense valve assembly, and renew the lid gasket. Where the inner glass or vacuum chamber is compromised, we quote a replacement server, since repairing a punctured vacuum vessel rarely pays.

!

Older VPR, VPS, VLPF, BX, or ST series brewers needing parts no longer in the catalogue

We service legacy Bunn-O-Matic machines other shops turn away, including the discontinued VPR, VPS, VLPF, BX, and ST pour-over and batch platforms. Sprayheads, brew valves, elements, and most thermostats are still available through Bunn's parts network or aftermarket equivalents. For controller boards on discontinued models, we source from refurbisher inventory or convert the machine to a current control board where the wiring allows. If a repair stops being economical, we will tell you straight.

Don't see your issue? Call (289) 217-3796 with a description of what's happening and any error codes on screen. We'll likely diagnose it before we arrive. And if the same fault keeps returning, that's scale at work. The right Bunn water filter ends the repeat visits.

Bunn, all over the map

Volume is hard on a brewer. Hard water is worse.

Bunn brewers do the heavy lifting in restaurants, convenience counters and hospitality floors. Push a lot through one in Hamilton and the tank shows it long before the same machine would in Mississauga. Start with your city.

FAQ

Bunn service, frequently asked.

20 answers covering service, repair, parts, installation, warranty, and edge cases.

Updated August 2026

Do you actually repair Bunn coffee machines across the GTA?

Yes. Bunn is one of our highest-volume platforms, and we usually have a batch brewer on the bench or a van out at a restaurant, office, or convenience store working on one. We run the full GTA, with Toronto the densest stretch of the route, and the coverage list further down this page shows every zone we reach.

Are you authorized by Bunn?

No, and we say so plainly. We're an independent commercial coffee equipment specialist, which lets us work on out-of-warranty machines, keep discontinued Bunn-O-Matic units running long after the dealer network drops them, and quote against the actual work rather than a factory pricing book.

Why does my Bunn heating element keep failing?

Almost always scale. Hard water bakes mineral onto the element until it can't shed heat, so it runs hotter to compensate and eventually opens. We replace the element, descale the tank properly, and recommend filtration sized to your volume so the next one lasts. Without conditioning the water, a fresh element just scales up again.

What's the most common Bunn service call you get?

A clogged sprayhead and a scaled tank, usually together. They show up as weak coffee, slow recovery between batches, and brew temperature drifting below the 195 to 205°F window. Both trace back to water hardness, so we fix the symptom and deal with the cause.

How fast can you get to a Bunn that's down?

Same-day. Call in the morning and a technician is usually on-site before the day is out, and later calls book for the next business day. Restaurants and QSR sites with no coffee at all get moved up the route.

How much does a Bunn repair cost?

Flat rate for the visit and diagnosis, which you hear when you book, with parts billed separately on top. Many Bunn parts, like sprayheads, brew valves, and thermostats, are inexpensive and ride on the truck. For anything larger you get a written quote on-site before we proceed.

What Bunn parts do you carry on the truck?

The high-wear ones: sprayheads, brew valves and solenoids, warmer elements and thermostats, level and tank probes, inlet solenoids, and common decanter and dispense-valve parts. That covers most calls in a single visit. Controller boards and model-specific assemblies are ordered per job, usually next-day.

Can you handle a high-volume QSR or office-coffee fleet?

Yes. Multi-machine and multi-site visits are routine, and you get one report covering what was done to each brewer. With a fleet we also watch for patterns: when several machines share a fault, the water or the cleaning routine is usually the real cause, not the machines.

Do you offer emergency service for restaurants?

We prioritize sites that are dead in service, like a hotel with no breakfast coffee or a QSR mid-rush. Tell us the situation when you call and we'll route the nearest technician. Evening and weekend windows can be arranged case by case for operations that can't lose daytime service.

How often should a Bunn batch brewer be serviced?

On hard local water, plan on a descale and sprayhead service every three to six months depending on volume and whether you run filtration. High-throughput sites without a filter need it sooner. We set an interval that matches your water and your cup counts.

Do I have to sign a maintenance contract?

No. We work call by call, and plenty of customers put us on a regular schedule only after they've seen the work. It's your choice, never a requirement.

Can you sort out water filtration for a Bunn setup?

Yes, and on hard local water it's the single best thing you can do for a Bunn. We size a cartridge or softener to your brew volume so scale stops chewing through elements, valves, and sprayheads. Filtration usually pays for itself in the parts you don't replace.

Can you still repair an old or discontinued Bunn?

Usually, yes. We service legacy Bunn-O-Matic machines, the VPR, VPS, VLPF, BX, and ST platforms, that other shops turn away. Sprayheads, valves, elements, and most thermostats are still available, and for discontinued boards we source from refurbisher stock or convert to a current control board where the wiring allows.

When does it make sense to replace a Bunn instead of repairing it?

Rarely, because most Bunn parts are cheap relative to the machine. A new sprayhead, brew valve, or element is a fraction of replacement cost. We call it when a tank or chassis is corroded through, or when a discontinued board can't be sourced or converted. You get the math and you decide.

My Bunn is still under manufacturer warranty. Can you work on it?

We can, but if the fault is covered, Bunn's own channel should handle it at no cost, and we'll tell you that on the phone. Much of what actually goes wrong, scale damage, worn consumables, water-related faults, sits outside most warranties, and that's the work we take on.

Can you recalibrate brew strength and batch sizes on a BrewWISE Bunn?

Yes. We measure bypass flow and brew ratio against your recipe, re-dial it on a refractometer where it helps, and reprogram batch sizes, pulse-brew profiles, and temperature offsets through the BrewWISE service menu. If the programming keeps dropping, the backup battery gets replaced so it holds.

We run several locations. How does multi-site Bunn service work?

One point of contact, one schedule, and one invoice format across every site. We keep notes per machine so the technician arrives knowing each brewer's history. Chains tell us the consistency is what they value most, the same hands on every Bunn.

Is there anything we should do daily to keep a Bunn healthy?

A few minutes goes a long way: rinse the sprayhead and decanters, wipe the warmers, and run the cleaning cycle on BrewWISE and bean-to-cup models. Most repeat faults we see trace back to skipped cleaning, so we walk your team through the routine on the way out.

Will you show our staff how to avoid the same problem again?

Yes, by default. Before we leave, the technician explains what failed, why, and the daily habit that prevents it, whether that's correct paper filters, a sprayhead rinse, or watching for the descale alert. Training is part of the visit, not an upsell.

How do I book a Bunn service call, and what should I have ready?

Call us or send the form on this page. Have the model and any error code or message on the display, plus a quick description of the symptom. That lets the technician load the likely parts before heading out, so most calls finish in one visit.

About Bunn

Reviewed August 2026

Bunn, in brief.

Bunn is an American manufacturer of commercial coffee brewers, headquartered in Springfield, Illinois, with one of the broadest commercial lineups in North America.

Illinois origin, broad commercial reach

Bunn-O-Matic Corporation was founded in 1957 by George R. Bunn in Springfield, Illinois. George Bunn invented the flat-bottomed paper coffee filter that became the industry standard, and shortly after introduced the first commercial pour-over drip brewer. The company remains family-owned today and operates manufacturing in Springfield, Illinois and Creston, Iowa.

The brewer that defined a category

Bunn's signature contribution to commercial coffee is the in-line water heating tank paired with a sprayhead, the architecture used by virtually every commercial drip brewer made since. The platform's simplicity is also its strength: a hot water tank, a brew valve, a sprayhead, a filter basket, and a decanter or thermal server. Decades of refinement have produced one of the most serviceable commercial lineups on the market.

ICB Infusion, Axiom, CWTF, Fast Cup, Black & White

The ICB Infusion Series targets specialty cafés and offices with programmable pulse-brewing, dual-coffee profiles, and touchscreen / Platinum Edition options folded into the same ICB service family. The Axiom series anchors the high-volume restaurant segment, with dual-voltage wiring treated as a configuration option rather than a separate machine. CWTF, GPR, VP, Soft Heat, Titan, and ThermoFresh cover batch, airpot, thermal-server, and pour-over brewing. Fast Cup, Black & White, Sure Immersion, Crescendo, My Café, and Trifecta cover single-cup and bean-to-cup service.

Bunn machines we service across the GTA

Bunn's current coffee lineup spans the ICB and ITCB Infusion brewers, the Axiom and CWTF batch platforms, BrewWISE-controlled Dual and Single SH servers, ThermoFresh, the GPR and VP brewers, the bean-to-cup Crescendo and Black & White machines, and coffee-focused cold and nitro systems. Its powder and non-coffee cold-beverage dispensers sit outside the coffee equipment we service.

Why batch brewers still need a specialist

Bunn machines are simple by commercial-coffee standards, and that simplicity invites generalist appliance technicians to take a swing at them. The result is repeat callbacks: sprayheads cleaned but not measured, descaling done but the cycle counter not reset, BrewWISE controllers swapped instead of reprogrammed. We carry sprayheads, brew valves, thermostats, elements, and decanter parts for the full Bunn range, and we know which of the dozen-plus ICB firmware revisions actually fixes the touchscreen issue you're seeing.

Your Bunn deserves a specialist.
