Current de Jong DUKE machines report faults as on-screen codes, and the architecture covers a lot of ground: brew chamber, grinder, soluble canisters, milk system, water circuit, display, and ConnectMe telemetry. This dictionary lists the codes we meet most often on the Lua, Avy, Nio, Zia, Virtu, Vareo, and Rosa, plus legacy Zico, Edge, Siro, filterfresh, and UNI-brewer units still in the field. Boiler
2 codesE01 Boiler heating timeout
The boiler hasn't reached set temperature in the allowed warm-up window. Dispense is locked out to protect the element.
Likely causes
- Heating element degraded or open-circuit
- Scale insulating the element from the water
- NTC sensor failed
- Safety thermostat tripped
Try this first
- Power-cycle the machine at the wall
- Verify the water supply is open
- Check the visible safety thermostat for trip
If the fault returns after a reset, we test element resistance and NTC values and replace the failing component.
E03 Overheat protection triggered
The safety thermostat has tripped due to over-temperature. The machine locks out heating until reset.
Likely causes
- Heavy scale causing localized overheat
- Failed NTC reading low (over-driving the element)
- Element relay stuck closed
- Dry-fire after a supply interruption
Try this first
- Power off the machine completely
- Do not reset the Klixon repeatedly without diagnosis

Brew unit
1 codeE20 Bean-to-cup brew unit fault (Virtu / Vareo / Rosa configurations)
On Virtu, Vareo, and Rosa bean-to-cup configurations, the espresso brew unit isn't reaching position or is stalling mid-cycle.
Likely causes
- Grind buildup binding the brew piston
- Worn cam followers or dry lubrication
- Failed home-position sensor
- Drive motor weak
Try this first
- Power-cycle and observe homing
- Remove the brew unit and inspect for grind buildup
If homing still fails after a power-cycle, the unit needs a proper service: full clean, new seals, lubrication, and verified cycle timing.
Grinder
2 codesE25 Grinder dose timeout
The grinder ran past maximum dose time without completing. The drink is aborted.
Likely causes
- Empty bean hopper or bridged beans
- Burrs at end of life
- Coffee oils contaminating the chamber
- Grinder motor weak
Try this first
- Verify bean flow
- Tap to break any hopper bridge
- Brush coffee dust off the throat
If beans flow freely and the timeout keeps returning, the burrs are at end of life. We measure them and replace on-site.
E26 Bean hopper empty
The bean-level sensor reads the hopper as empty, and the machine prompts for a refill before it will grind.
Likely causes
- Hopper genuinely empty
- Beans bridged above the sensor
- Sensor contaminated with bean dust
Try this first
- Refill the hopper and tap to break any bridge
- Wipe the sensor window
Persistent empty alerts with a full hopper mean a contaminated or failed sensor. That's a quick clean or swap.
Electronics
2 codesE60 Touchscreen / display fault
On current touchscreen-equipped de Jong DUKE machines and legacy Virtu Touch / Edge units, the display has frozen or stopped responding to input.
Likely causes
- Firmware hang
- Display ribbon cable worked loose
- Touch digitizer hardware fault
Try this first
- Power-cycle the machine
If the screen still doesn't respond, we reseat the ribbon and replace the display module if the digitizer has failed.
E61 Main controller boot fault
The controller isn't completing boot or is faulting on startup.
Likely causes
- Corrupted firmware after a power interruption
- Failed power-supply rail
- Protection circuit tripped
Try this first
- Power-cycle once at the wall (don't repeat aggressively)
Call us. We test supply rails, reflash firmware if recoverable, and replace the controller if needed.
Water
3 codesE40 Water inlet timeout
The fill cycle hasn't completed in time. Either inlet flow stopped or the tank isn't filling.
Likely causes
- Supply tap closed or pressure low
- Inlet solenoid clogged with scale
- Float sensor stuck low
- Inlet hose kinked
Try this first
- Verify supply is open
- Listen for the solenoid clicking on fill attempt
- Check the hose isn't kinked
If the solenoid clicks but no water flows, the valve is scaled. We clean strainer and replace as needed.
E41 Flow meter no pulses
The flow meter isn't reporting during dispense. The cycle aborts because volume can't be measured.
Likely causes
- Flow meter turbine clogged
- Pump losing prime or weak output
- Cable disconnected
- Brew valve not opening
Try this first
- Run a hot-water dispense to check general flow
- Listen for pump priming
If flow looks weak everywhere, call us. We clean the turbine, test the pump, and check the brew valve, usually all in the same visit.
E42 Descale required
The descale counter has reached its limit based on water-hardness setting and throughput.
Likely causes
- Genuine scale buildup
- Hard water without adequate filtration
- Counter not reset after the previous descale
Try this first
- Run the descale cycle to completion with approved product
- Reset the counter through the service menu
- Verify water-hardness setting matches the install
Frequent descale alerts in the GTA usually mean an under-spec'd filter. We measure water and recommend the right cartridge.
Sensors
3 codesE02 Boiler temperature sensor out of range
The boiler NTC is reading out of valid range. The controller can't regulate temperature safely.
Likely causes
- NTC sensor failed
- Sensor cable damaged or pinched
- Connector unseated
Try this first
- Power-cycle the machine
- Inspect visible sensor cable for damage
If the reading doesn't come back after a power-cycle, the sensor needs replacing. It's a quick on-site swap.
E50 Drip tray full / missing
The drip tray float reads full or the tray is absent.
Likely causes
- Tray actually full
- Float stuck on residue
- Tray microswitch dirty
Try this first
- Empty and rinse the tray
- Clean the float cavity
- Reseat the tray firmly
If alerts return immediately after a clean, empty tray goes back in, the float or microswitch is sticking. Both are quick on-site fixes.
E51 Grout / waste drawer counter limit
The spent-puck or waste drawer counter has reached its programmed limit. The machine prompts to empty before more dispense.
Likely causes
- Drawer actually full
- Counter not reset after previous empty
- Drawer-presence microswitch dirty
Try this first
- Empty the drawer and refit it fully seated
- Wait for on-screen reset confirmation
If the prompt stays after a clean empty and a proper refit, the microswitch needs cleaning or replacing. A short visit.
Cleaning
1 codeE80 Daily clean cycle required / aborted
The scheduled cleaning cycle is overdue or didn't complete. The machine flags it and may lock out affected drinks.
Likely causes
- Daily clean skipped
- Detergent exhausted
- Cleaning circuit blockage
- Power interruption mid-cycle
Try this first
- Re-initiate the cycle from the operator menu
- Verify detergent or cleaning tablets are loaded
If the cycle stalls in the same place repeatedly, we diagnose the specific stage and clear the blockage.
Connectivity
1 codeE70 ConnectMe telemetry offline
The machine isn't reporting to the ConnectMe telemetry platform. Local dispense still works, but the fleet dashboard shows this unit offline.
Likely causes
- Site network connectivity issue (router, firewall, SIM)
- Telemetry / comms module failed or unseated
- ConnectMe-side account or device registration drift
- Outdated telemetry firmware
Try this first
- Verify other devices on the same network are online
- Power-cycle the machine to retrigger the telemetry handshake
If local network is healthy and ConnectMe still shows offline, we test the module and coordinate with the operator's ConnectMe administrator.
Other
3 codesE30 Refill canister sensor fault
A refill canister (instant powder, soluble milk, chocolate) isn't registering after a refill. Affected drinks may be disabled.
Likely causes
- Sensor contaminated with powder dust
- Connector loose
- Failed sensor
- Canister not fully seated after refill
Try this first
- Remove and refit the canister, confirming it seats
- Clean the sensor window or contact
If detection is still intermittent, we replace the sensor on-site. Refill detection should be reliable across the full canister range after the fix.
E31 Whipper bowl motor fault
The instant-drink whipper bowl motor isn't running, or current draw is outside spec. Instant drinks are disabled.
Likely causes
- Worn whipper impeller
- Failed whipper motor
- Motor coupling slipping
- Bowl not seated correctly
Try this first
- Refit the whipper bowl, confirming it clips in
- Verify the impeller spins freely
If the impeller spins freely and the fault remains, the motor or coupling needs attention. Both are serviceable in a single visit.
E32 Powder mixing / clumping fault
Instant powder isn't mixing into solution properly. Drink quality drifts and operators report clumping.
Likely causes
- Powder clumped on a wet bowl wall
- Worn whipper impeller
- Scale on the bowl's water inlet
- Humidity in the canister
Try this first
- Clean the bowl thoroughly
- Inspect the impeller for pitting
- Clear scale from the water inlet
Recurring clumping in humid offices needs a canister or seal upgrade. We can quote both.
Brew chamber
3 codesE10 Fresh-brew chamber position fault
The fresh-brew chamber didn't reach its commanded position (open, brew, eject) in time. The machine halts to protect the drive.
Likely causes
- Grind buildup on the chamber drive components
- Worn drive cam
- Home-position sensor (reed) failed
- Drive motor weak
Try this first
- Power-cycle and observe the chamber's homing motion
- Open the brew area and inspect for visible grind
Position faults are mechanical, so this one is a service visit: we strip the chamber, clean the drive components, and replace the sensor or motor as needed.
E11 Agitator paddle fault
The agitator paddle isn't running or current draw is wrong during the brew stroke. Fresh-brew extraction can't be confirmed and the cycle aborts.
Likely causes
- Agitator shaft binding on dried coffee
- Paddle worn or broken
- Worn motor coupling
- Failed agitator motor
Try this first
- Power-cycle the machine
- Verify the shaft turns freely with the chamber open and machine powered off
If the shaft turns freely and the fault stays, the coupling or motor is the suspect. We inspect the paddle, check the coupling, and test the motor, normally all in one visit.
E12 Filter screen / grounds-in-cup fault
Grounds are reaching the cup, or the filter screen is reading abnormally. Most often diagnosed from customer complaint plus inspection.
Likely causes
- Filter screen in the brew chamber torn
- Screen seated incorrectly after cleaning
- Discharge valve not sealing on the spent puck
Try this first
- Inspect the filter screen and seating
- Verify screen is in the groove, not under the gasket
If the screen looks intact and grounds keep appearing, call us. Screen and seal replacement is inexpensive, and we verify clean discharge across multiple test brews.
