Water filtration & cartridges
de Jong DUKE's Virtu, Nio, Lua, Avy, Vareo, and Rosa platforms are the workhorse OCS bean-to-cup machines in the GTA office market, and the warranty position is explicit: the 1-year parts coverage requires an approved water filter installed at commissioning. We standardize these installs on BWT Bestmax, the premium in-line equivalent, sized by volume. Brew group, ceramic grinders, and milk circuit are all scale-sensitive, and the on-board descale alone isn't enough on hard GTA water.
We'll measure your water and size the cartridge to your machine.

Our recommendation
de Jong DUKE uses both stages, a proprietary in-machine cartridge for fine filtration plus an upstream cartridge for bulk hardness and chlorine. Sized together, the two stages extend each other's life and keep scale off the boiler on hard GTA water.

GTA city × de Jong DUKE schedule
Cartridge capacity is rated at 10°dKH. Local GTA hardness varies, so the same cartridge runs longer in soft Toronto water than in hard Hamilton water. Find your city, get your swap interval.
| GTA city | Local hardness | Class | Suggested swap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto | Moderate | 6-9 months | |
| Mississauga | Moderate | 6-9 months | |
| Etobicoke | Moderate | 6-9 months | |
| North York | Moderate | 6-9 months | |
| Oakville | Moderate | 5-7 months | |
| Brampton | Elevated | 5-7 months | |
| Burlington | Elevated | 5-7 months | |
| Vaughan | Hard | 4-6 months | |
| Markham | Hard | 4-6 months | |
| Hamilton | Severe | 3-5 months |
Intervals assume a single cartridge sized to typical site volume. Capacity-tracked PM beats calendar-only PM, we measure feed water at commissioning and tune your specific schedule from there. Hardness data: municipal water-quality reports, updated annually.
When to swap your cartridge
Cartridge exhaustion shows up well before the machine actually fails. Tick anything you're seeing right now and we'll read the pattern.
Common de Jong DUKE filter problems
Scale on the brew piston + worn seals from scale abrasion
Descale, rebuild brew group, install or upgrade BWT Bestmax cartridge.
Scale + milk-protein in the steam circuit
Run milk-clean + descale, install upstream filter, schedule recurring milk-clean.
What happens if you skip de Jong DUKE filtration
Nothing looks wrong for months, which is exactly why unfiltered machines fail early. Here's how the damage escalates.
No visible signs. Scale begins precipitating onto the heating element and brew boiler. Cup quality unchanged.
Visible scale at the steam tip and dispense spout. Heat-up time creeps past baseline. Carbon stage exhausts; cup tastes flat or chlorinated.
Milk foam quality degrades. Brew-temperature stability drifts as boiler insulation worsens. Relief valves start sticking. Service-call frequency climbs.
Heating-element failure becomes common. Brew-group reseal cycles shorten. Pinhole leaks in boiler tubing. Warranty void from documented scale damage.
Catastrophic component failure on a 12-year platform. The repair-vs-replace tipping point hits a decade earlier than it should have.

Our de Jong DUKE filter service
We commission de Jong DUKE installs with a BWT Bestmax cartridge sized to route volume, document the install for warranty, and put the cartridge swap on the OCS route's PM schedule. Brew-group reseals and milk-circuit cleans are sequenced against filter changes.
Three short questions and the card returns the descale and filter cadence we'd set on a de Jong DUKE install. No email, no gate.
Your schedule builds here as you answer.
*Cautious by design, not pulled from a de Jong DUKE manual. Machine water counters and a measured hardness test earn you longer intervals. Check with us first if a schedule is already in place.
FAQ

de Jong DUKE uses BWT Bestmax M / L (de Jong DUKE dealer spec) as the OEM cartridge, plus optional upstream filtration on higher-volume installs. See the cartridge spec table above for part numbers, capacity, and replacement intervals.
Cartridge capacity is rated at 10°dKH. In moderate-hardness Toronto / Mississauga water, expect 9 to 12 months on a properly-sized cartridge. In harder York Region and Hamilton water, drop to 6 to 9 months. The full city-by-city schedule is in the GTA schedule table above.
de Jong DUKE doesn't mandate a specific brand but requires water in spec (typically 4-8°dH after the cartridge). Most installs default to BWT. We document the install for warranty traceability.
On high-volume installs, yes. The in-machine cartridge (AquaClean, CLARIS Pro, AquaBasic, etc.) handles short-cycle fine-filtration and the machine's firmware tracks it. An upstream cartridge handles the bulk hardness and chlorine load so the in-machine cartridge can focus on the polish stage. On low-volume office installs the in-machine cartridge alone is enough; on cafe / hospitality volume the dual setup extends in-machine cartridge life dramatically.
Yes for the platforms we work on most, BWT Bestmax M/L/XL, Pentair Everpure Claris Ultra, Jura CLARIS Pro Smart, Saeco AquaClean CA6903, WMF AquaBasic V/M/XL, and Curtis CSC5CC00/CSC10CC00 ride on the truck. Less common cartridges (some Optipure tiers, Elektra Kwts factory softener, Melitta Cafina-branded) are ordered ahead of the visit so we land with the right part on the first trip.
Yes. We commission with the install date logged against the cartridge's capacity rating and the site's measured daily volume. Our PM schedule lands cartridge swaps before exhaustion, descales the machine when the cartridge is being changed (so scale never reaches the boiler), and sends you the service log so you have warranty traceability for the manufacturer.
Cartridge cost varies by tier, a single BWT Bestmax Premium L runs around $180 to $230 CAD, an Everpure Claris Ultra 500 sits in the same range. Installation labour on a new upstream loop is typically 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on plumbing access. Routine cartridge swaps on an existing head are a 15-minute visit, usually folded into a PM call to save you a separate truck roll. We quote in writing before any work.
The record
Asked them to look at a machine I bought second-hand. Honest assessment up front: the brew unit was past economical repair. They quoted a refurbished replacement instead of running up parts.
We measure feed-water hardness on every install, dial the bypass to the manufacturer window, and put cartridges on capacity-tracked PM so nothing scales the boiler.
