A weeping portafilter gasket is routine wear, not a breakdown. We fit a new gasket and dispersion screen, clean the threads, and reseat under brew pressure to confirm the seal holds dry.
Baked-on oil and fine sludge pit the screen and start the shot channelling. We replace it, backflush the group with detergent, and check that flow comes off the screen evenly again.
Scale on the solenoid seat or a tiring coil makes the valve stick. We test the coil, descale the valve, and rebuild or replace the cartridge, then confirm the three-way drain releases cleanly at the end of the shot.
A worn rotary pump, expansion-valve drift, or a clogged inlet screen will all hold brew pressure under 9 bar. Off a blind-portafilter gauge we sort the pump from the OPV, reset the expansion valve, and replace the pump only if its output genuinely won't make spec.
Air in the line, a starved inlet, or a worn rotary vane sets the pump hammering as the shot begins. We bleed the line, confirm the inlet pressure feeding the machine, and open the pump head; a worn rotary assembly is quoted for replacement.
Because every S40 group runs its own brew boiler and PID, one group can drift while the others hold. We read brew water temperature group by group with a Scace device, trim the PID offsets in the Seletron service menu, and prove each one steady across ten back-to-back shots.
Slow recovery traces to scale insulating the steam-boiler element, a drifting pressurestat, or a sensor fault. We descale, measure element resistance and current draw, check the pressurestat or steam sensor, and replace the part that's dragging recovery down.
The culprit is a faulty NTC temperature sensor, a relay sticking on the Seletron controller, or a degraded element. We ohm the sensor against the resistance reference, inspect the relay, and measure the element, then replace the bad part and clear the error log.
A puddle underneath comes from a brew-group seal, a cracked internal line, or a blocked drain. We pressure-test the circuit, clear the drain, and follow the water back to its source; seals go back on the spot.
Constant refilling usually means the level probe has scaled over or a hairline leak is bleeding the boiler down; a no-fill points to a failed inlet solenoid, scale in the valve seat, or a probe stuck reading "full." We meter the probe, descale, and replace whatever is actually at fault.
A worn valve cartridge or scale on the seat keeps the wand dribbling after you close it. We rebuild the valve with a new cartridge and seals, descale the wand internals, and cycle it repeatedly until the shut-off is fully dry.
Weak or sputtering steam means the boiler isn't holding set pressure or scale has crept into the steam circuit. We descale, confirm the boiler holds pressure under load, and clear the wand-tip jets; an eroded tip gets swapped.
Dead or flaky buttons are almost typically a worn keypad membrane. We test the inputs, swap the membrane when it reads intermittent, and confirm every dose button registers at the controller.
Through the Seletron service interface we pull the fault history and tie the displayed code to its real source, be it a sensor, relay, board, or solenoid. Most clear with a sensor or relay swap; a full board replacement, if it's truly needed, is quoted first.
When volumetric doses creep, mineral buildup on the flow meter is the reason. We pull the meter, clean the impeller, confirm a clean pulse signal back to the Seletron, and reprogram the doses against a calibrated shot glass.
An erratic reading on one group is usually wire fatigue at the strain relief or the NTC itself drifting. We test the sensor against the resistance reference, work the harness for a break, and replace the NTC if it's out of spec, then recalibrate that group's PID through Seletron.

Each S40 group has its own brew boiler and PID, so one can drift while the rest hold steady. The usual culprit is a PID offset that has wandered or a brew-side NTC sensor reading off on that group. We read every group with a Scace device, retrim the offsets through the Seletron service menu, and prove each one steady across ten back-to-back shots.
E8 means the Seletron controller has lost communication with the user-interface board or failed its self-test on boot. It can be an unseated ribbon cable, water damage, a blown driver, or a board reaching end of life. Power the machine down once from the main switch; if E8 stays, it needs a technician. Seletron boards are still supported, but parts lead time can run one to two weeks, so we confirm availability before promising a turnaround.
Scale on the solenoid seat or a worn coil keeps the valve from switching cleanly, and on the Seletron board a blown solenoid driver can lock that group out entirely, which shows as the E6 fault. We test the coil and the driver, descale the valve, and rebuild or replace the cartridge, then confirm the three-way drain releases at the end of the shot.
The S40 is rated to about 300 shots per group, so a three-group machine comfortably covers a high-volume specialty bar. It holds that rating because every group runs its own brew boiler, but heavy volume still wears group seals and scales the boilers faster, so the busiest machines see us on a regular service rhythm.
Yes, the S40 comes in two and three group, and we work on both, along with the Seletron, Suprema, and TA trims, which share the same multi-boiler hydraulics. The extra group on a three-group machine just means one more brew boiler, PID loop, and solenoid to keep in spec. Parts and procedures are identical across the trims.
