The S5 EK is La Spaziale's specialty café workhorse, compact at the group and built on a heat exchanger. An optional brew-boiler PID sharpens temperature control, but the core is classic HX hydraulics with manual steam wands, rated to around 280 shots a group. Specialty cafés and micro-roasters run it because it is honest and repeatable. From the bench it throws fewer codes than a dual-boiler platform, but it has its own vocabulary: HX scale, cooling flushes, and brew temperature that moves with steam pressure.

Baked-on coffee oil pits the screen and skews the spray pattern. We fit a new screen and backflush the group with detergent so water spreads evenly again.
Scale on the seat or a tiring coil makes the group solenoid stick. We test the coil, descale the valve, and rebuild the cartridge so it switches cleanly.
A swinging needle on mechanical-stat trim means the pressurestat is worn. We compare it against a reference gauge and replace it once it's out of tolerance, since these don't rebuild reliably.
Low brew pressure is pump wear, expansion-valve drift, or a clogged inlet screen. We gauge it from a blind portafilter and isolate which one before touching anything.
Hammering comes from air in the line, a starved inlet, or a worn vane. We bleed the line, confirm the feed, and open the pump head to check the vane.
On the S5 EK's heat exchanger, brew temperature follows steam-boiler pressure and the scale inside the HX coil. We descale that coil separately from the steam boiler, check the pressurestat calibration, read brew temperature at the group with a Scace device, and run the cooling-flush routine past your baristas.
Sluggish recovery is scale on the element or a drifting pressurestat. We descale, measure element resistance, verify the pressurestat against a gauge, and replace the part that's failing.
Standing water underneath is a seal, a cracked line, or a blocked drain. We pressure-test the circuit and trace the leak to its source before fixing it.
A no-fill is a failed inlet solenoid, a scaled valve seat, or a misreading level probe, and on an HX boiler the probe scales fastest because it sits right in the steam boiler. We meter it at the probe, descale the assembly, and replace the probe if it won't read true.
A worn valve cartridge lets the wand drip once it's closed. We rebuild the valve, descale the internals, and cycle it to confirm a dry shut-off.
Weak steam means the boiler isn't sitting at pressure. We descale the steam side and confirm it holds pressure under load.
Drifting doses come from buildup on the flow meter. We clean the meter, confirm it's pulsing, and reprogram the doses to target.
A display or controller fault can trace back to a sensor, a relay, or the board itself. We read the stored fault history first, pin down the real cause, and fix that instead of throwing parts at it.
A cold or overheating cup warmer is a failed element or a sticking thermostat. We measure element resistance, test the thermostat, and replace whichever one has let go.
