Error code reference

Rancilio error codes, what they mean and how to fix them.

These are the fault codes and service alerts the USB-equipped Rancilio machines put on the display, what each one is telling you, and what to check before you call. They cover the current Classe 5, 7, 9, 11, and 20 range plus the Specialty RS1 and Invicta, and the same codes apply to the legacy Epoca and Millennium machines still in service. Everything here is read through the USB service board.

About these codes. Compiled from current Rancilio product documentation and our own GTA service logs. Where a code applies only to certain platforms, the Xcelsius groups, the Classe 20 ASB, or the RS1 micro-boilers, the entry says so. Updated July 2026

Boiler

4 codes
E2 Boiler heating timeout Critical

The boiler didn't reach setpoint inside the allowed warm-up window, so the USB board cuts the element to guard against dry-firing or a scale-driven runaway.

Likely causes

  • Element scaled and insulating
  • Element electrically degraded or open
  • SSR / contactor failed open
  • Brown-out condition during warm-up
  • Boiler under-filled because of an autofill issue upstream

Try this first

  1. Confirm boiler is full
  2. Verify mains voltage and that nothing on the same circuit is browning out
  3. Power-cycle once
When to call us

Call us. We test element resistance, verify the SSR, and descale if scale is the underlying cause. Untreated Toronto water shortens element life, so scale is a common root here.

E4 Steam pressure / pressure stat fault Critical

Steam boiler pressure is outside the safe window, or the pressure stat isn't cycling correctly, so the element is cut.

Likely causes

  • Pressure stat contacts welded closed
  • Stat drifted high after years of use
  • Capillary tube scaled, false-low reading
  • Safety pressure switch tripped

Try this first

  1. Shut down at the switch
  2. Read the boiler gauge directly, do not restart if pressure is high
When to call us

Call us right away. The fix is a pressure-stat replacement and a safety-circuit check.

E6 Xcelsius group temperature fault (Classe 11 Xcelsius / Classe 20 ASB) Warning

On Xcelsius and Classe 20 ASB machines each group controls its own temperature, and one group is now reading outside its allowed offset from setpoint.

Likely causes

  • Group NTC drifted
  • Group circuit scaled, affecting thermal behaviour
  • Group SSR intermittent
  • Xcelsius calibration reset after firmware update without recommissioning

Try this first

  1. Note which group is flagged
  2. Pull shots on each group and weigh, variance confirms it
When to call us

Call us. We descale the group, verify the sensor against a calibrated reference, and recalibrate the Xcelsius offset through the USB service menu.

E11 RS1 group micro-boiler fault Critical

On the Specialty RS1 each stainless group carries its own micro-boiler with two elements. The flagged group is reading out of range, or one of its elements has stopped responding.

Likely causes

  • One of the two group elements failed
  • Group NTC drifted
  • Group SSR failed
  • Insulation displaced after a previous service

Try this first

  1. Note which group is flagged
  2. Other groups should continue to operate normally
When to call us

Call us. We test element resistance on each side, check the SSR, and reseat the group insulation. RS1 work needs hands that know the dual-element layout.

Group head

1 code
E7 Pre-infusion / solenoid fault Warning

On the Classe 11, Classe 20, and RS1 the pre-infusion solenoid either didn't actuate or didn't give the expected response, so pre-infusion is bypassed and the shot runs at full pressure.

Likely causes

  • Solenoid coil burnt out
  • Solenoid mechanically stuck
  • Coil wire broken at strain relief
  • USB output channel failed

Try this first

  1. Listen for the solenoid click on shot start
  2. Compare to a known-good group
When to call us

Call us. We swap the coil or the full solenoid, then verify the pressure curve.

Steam

1 code
E12 Steam valve / cartridge wear flag Info

On machines with steam-circuit feedback this is informational: the controller is seeing a pattern that fits a leaking steam valve. The machine keeps running.

Likely causes

  • Steam valve cartridge worn
  • Milk-stone holding the seat open
  • Joystick bushing worn

Try this first

  1. Look for steam dripping from the wand at rest
  2. Clean the steam tip
When to call us

Schedule it. A steam valve rebuild is routine work.

Pump

2 codes
E5 Flow meter / dose timeout Warning

The controller started a volumetric shot but rarely saw flow meter pulses before the timeout, so the shot aborts. Volumetric dosing stays unreliable until it's cleared.

Likely causes

  • Flow meter impeller coated with mineral scale
  • Flow meter wire unseated at the USB board
  • Gicleur on the affected group blocked
  • Pump not running
  • Inlet water closed

Try this first

  1. Listen for the pump engaging on a shot
  2. Try each group, isolate to a single group if possible
When to call us

Call us. We clean the flow meter and reprogram the dose; if the meter is worn, we'll quote a replacement.

E8 Pump pressure low / OPV drift Warning

Brew pressure feedback is sitting below the expected window across all groups. Shots may still finish, but extraction is inconsistent.

Likely causes

  • Rotary pump worn
  • OPV / bypass drifted from 9 bar
  • Inlet pressure low from an undersized RO
  • Pump capacitor degraded

Try this first

  1. Check the boiler gauge on a blank shot
  2. Confirm inlet pressure at the regulator
When to call us

Call us. We reset the OPV against a portafilter gauge and replace the pump if it's below spec.

Electronics

2 codes
E9 USB service board communication error Warning

The link between the USB service board and the front-panel display, or one of the slave group boards, is degraded or lost.

Likely causes

  • Serial cable unseated
  • Cable damaged by steam migration
  • Slave board failed
  • Firmware mismatch after a partial update

Try this first

  1. Power-cycle at the breaker
  2. Check which group or function is unresponsive
When to call us

Call us. We check the cabling, confirm the firmware version across the boards, and replace a slave board if one has failed.

E10 Lighted dose button bank fault Info

One or more dose buttons on the affected group aren't registering presses, aren't lighting up, or both. The machine keeps working on the other groups.

Likely causes

  • Microswitch contacts corroded by steam migration
  • LED failed
  • Ribbon to the controller unseated
  • Water intrusion behind the front panel

Try this first

  1. Test every button and note the failure pattern
  2. Avoid wet-wiping the panel until it is inspected
When to call us

Schedule it when convenient. We service the full button bank with the panel off, replacing LEDs and switches together.

Water

2 codes
E3 Autofill timeout Critical

The autofill solenoid stayed open past the allowed fill window without the level probe ever seeing 'full', so the fill circuit is cut.

Likely causes

  • Water supply closed or restricted
  • Softener cartridge at end of life
  • Autofill solenoid mechanically stuck closed
  • Level probe heavily scaled
  • Boiler leaking as fast as it fills

Try this first

  1. Verify water supply is fully open
  2. Inspect the chassis for visible leaks
  3. Check upstream filtration
When to call us

Call us. We descale the probe, test the solenoid, and dye-trace if a leak is suspected. Don't keep restarting it if there's water on the floor.

Maintenance Service interval / descale reminder Info

The maintenance counter has elapsed. It isn't a failure, and the machine keeps brewing normally.

Likely causes

  • Litres-dispensed counter elapsed
  • Time-based counter elapsed
  • Filter cartridge counter expired

Try this first

  1. Confirm whether the reminder is for descale, softener, or filter
  2. Do not clear without performing the service
When to call us

Schedule a maintenance visit. We reset the counter through the USB service menu as part of closing out the job.

Sensors

1 code
E1 Boiler NTC fault Critical

The USB service board has lost a valid signal from a boiler temperature sensor. It holds power off the element until the sensor checks out, so the machine won't heat.

Likely causes

  • NTC failed open or short
  • Connector at the USB board unseated
  • Steam migration into the sensor housing on the steam boiler
  • Sensor lead chafed on the chassis

Try this first

  1. Power-cycle at the breaker
  2. Check whether the code clears momentarily, intermittent points to a connector, not the sensor itself
When to call us

Call us. The fix is a resistance test against the reference table and a targeted sensor replacement.

FAQ

Rancilio error codes, frequently asked.

9 answers about resetting codes, recurring faults, firmware versions, and when DIY ends.

Updated July 2026

What does Rancilio error code E1 mean?

Every documented Rancilio fault we see is listed above, with its meaning, common causes, and what to try before calling a technician. If the code on your machine isn't on this page, call us with the exact display string and we'll work it out by phone.

Can I clear or reset a Rancilio error code myself?

Sometimes. Many Rancilio codes clear after a power cycle, a completed descale, or a counter reset through the service menu. Codes tied to a hardware fault (failed sensor, blown element, board issue) will return immediately and need a technician. Each code above lists what's safe to try first.

Why does the same Rancilio error keep coming back?

A code that returns after a power cycle is signalling a real fault, not a glitch. The underlying part (sensor, heating element, valve, motor, board) needs replacement. Repeat codes are diagnostic gold for us, so call with the exact code and any timing or symptom pattern you've noticed.

My Rancilio code isn't listed. Why?

Rancilio updates fault tables across firmware revisions and model generations, and not every code is documented publicly. We see codes in the field that aren't in any published list. Call us with the exact display string and the model and we'll work it out from our service log.

How fast can you get on-site if I'm stuck on an error code?

Most calls in Toronto and the immediate GTA get same-day on-site response when scheduling allows. Tell us the code and the model when you book and we'll bring the right parts on the first visit so the repair finishes the same day in most cases.

Do I need to be authorized by Rancilio to reset an error code?

No. We're an independent service provider, not affiliated with Rancilio, and we work on machines outside the manufacturer's authorized network routinely. That independence lets us service older or out-of-warranty machines authorized networks may decline, and quote transparently every time.

Is it worth fixing an old Rancilio machine that keeps throwing codes?

Depends on the machine, the code, and the cost. We give you honest math on this. If repairs are starting to exceed roughly 50% of a refurbished replacement and multiple major systems are throwing codes, we'll tell you it's time to look at replacing rather than running up the repair bill.

Will independent service void my Rancilio warranty?

If your machine is under the manufacturer's warranty, independent service may affect coverage depending on Rancilio's specific terms. Try the manufacturer's authorized network first. If their response is slow or they decline coverage for your code, call us and we'll service it on standard terms.

How many Rancilio codes are documented on this page?

13 codes are documented above, organized by the system they affect. The list is compiled from manufacturer service literature, technician forums, and our own service log. We update it as new codes appear or firmware adds new states.
