The Opera 2.0 is Sanremo's flagship, the competition machine that put the brand on World stages. It runs three separate PID circuits, steam, brew, and group, with soft pre-infusion in a dedicated chamber and programmable post-infusion that drops pressure at the end of the shot. Baristas dial it in by feel through the paddle. On the bench the work concentrates in a few places: the paddle encoder and needle valve, the per-group pre-infusion solenoids, the group gaskets, and PID offsets that drift if nobody logs them.

We clean the needle valve, check the encoder signal, and renew the encoder or paddle assembly when it is worn. Flow curves are re-baselined after the swap.

Pre-infusion solenoid sticking or pre-infusion phase missing on one group

Pre-infusion solenoids are a wear item on the Opera, and one can quit while the other groups keep working. We test the coil, descale the valve seat, and replace the solenoid if it reads intermittent, then verify pre-infusion timing against the machine's profile spec.

Group head gasket weeping around the portafilter

A weeping portafilter is almost typically a tired group gasket, and because each group is independent one can fail while the others stay dry. We pull the affected group, replace the gasket and dispersion screen, clean the threads, and pressure-test the seal.

Dispersion screen pitted or channelling visible

Channelling and a pitted screen come from oil baking into the mesh. We fit a new dispersion screen, backflush the group with detergent, and confirm even flow before moving on.

Brew pressure won't reach target or drops mid-shot

Pump wear, OPV or expansion-valve drift, or a clogged inlet screen are the suspects. We gauge brew pressure at the group, isolate the cause, set the OPV, and replace the pump if output sits below spec.

Brew temperature drift between groups

Every Opera group runs its own boiler and PID, so drift points to sensor calibration or PID offsets that were changed without being logged. We read brew water temperature per group with a Scace device, reset the offsets, and confirm stability across ten shots on each group.

Steam boiler below pressure or recovery slow

Look to scale on the steam-boiler element, a drifting pressurestat, or in PID-controlled steam configurations a failing sensor. We descale, measure element resistance, verify the pressurestat or steam PID sensor, and replace the component at fault.

Water pooling under the machine

Water pooling underneath comes from an internal water-line crack, a brew-group seal, or a heat-exchanger fitting. We pressure-test the circuit, isolate the leak, and renew the seal or fitting. Cracked lines are quoted before replacement.

Why does the paddle on my Opera 2.0 feel vague or inconsistent?

One group on my Opera 2.0 is running hotter or cooler than the others. Why?

Can you re-baseline the flow profile on an Opera 2.0?

Yes, that is routine. If the curve has gone flat or will not ramp, we test the paddle encoder, inspect the needle-valve seat, and reset any PID offset that has drifted out of range. The flow curve is then re-baselined against a portafilter pressure gauge so the paddle responds the way it should.

My Opera 2.0 is weeping from the group during the shot. What is that?

A tired group gasket, the most routine wear part on the machine. On the Opera one group can weep while the rest stay dry. We pull that group, replace the gasket and dispersion screen, clean the threads, and pressure-test the seal. The part rides on the truck, so it is done in the same visit.

How many shots a day can an Opera 2.0 actually handle?

It is rated to around 300 shots per group per day, and it holds that pace because each group has its own boiler and PID. The limit you hit on a busy bar is usually steam recovery or your own dial-in, not the brew side. If a group cannot keep temperature under a rush, that is a fault to chase, not the machine's ceiling.

Is the Opera 2.0 worth repairing or should we replace it?
