Brasilia error codes, what they mean and how to fix them.
Most Brasilia machines in the field signal trouble through symptoms rather than numbered codes: gauge behaviour, the low-water lamp, and pour quality at the portafilter. This page lists the service triggers we see on Brasilia's traditional frames, what each one means, and how we fix it. Verona machines with ITP electronics add a handful of controller faults, and those are covered here too.

Boiler
2 codesHX temp drift Heat exchanger temperature inconsistent (Portofino, Roma)
Heat-exchanger machines borrow their brew water temperature from boiler pressure, so when pressure wanders, pour quality drifts first. The pressurestat can still test as serviceable at this stage; the shots are the earlier warning.
Likely causes
- Boiler pressure wandering off its setpoint
- Pressurestat drifting sooner than it tests faulty
- No consistent cooling-flush routine at the bar
Try this first
- Check where the boiler gauge sits against its usual mark.
- Run a short cooling flush before each shot and see if the cup evens out.
- Note whether the drift tracks busy versus quiet periods.
We verify pressurestat operation, measure brew water temperature at the group with a calibrated probe, and work out a consistent flush routine with the operator. If boiler pressure is off, the pressurestat gets adjusted first and the group re-measured. Call us.
Scaled boiler Slow heat-up and weak steam
Hard Toronto-area water plus 20-plus years of service leaves most legacy Brasilia HX boilers carrying real scale. The machine tells you through long warm-up, steam that fades mid-pitcher, and pressurestat cycling that rarely settles.
Likely causes
- Decades of scale insulating the element and boiler walls
- Heating element drawing low under deposit
- Softener missing or long expired on the feed line
Try this first
- Time the morning warm-up against what the machine used to need.
- Check the softener or filter is connected and in date.
- Ease off back-to-back steaming and see whether pressure recovers.
A full descale comes first, followed by a check of the heating element's resistance, with replacement if it is drawing low. The mechanical level probe is descaled or replaced in the same visit, and the sight glass is rebuilt. Call us.
Pressure
1 codePressurestat drift Boiler pressure runs high or cycles erratically
The mechanical pressurestat is the single most common service item on Brasilia's commercial frames. The gauge gives it away: boiler pressure creeps above the setpoint, cycles in a wide band, or the differential collapses so the element short-cycles.
Likely causes
- Aged pressurestat contacts drifting off their setpoints
- Collapsed differential short-cycling the heating element
- Scale restricting the pressurestat's sensing port
Try this first
- Watch the boiler gauge through a few heating cycles and note where it cuts in and out.
- Power the machine off, wait 30 seconds, and power back on to see if the cycling settles.
- If pressure keeps climbing past 1.4 bar, switch the machine off and leave it off.
We test cut-in and cut-out against the boiler gauge, adjust the setpoint, and replace the pressurestat outright if the differential has collapsed. Sirai and CEME units fit most Portofino, Roma, and Verona generations, so the part is rarely the holdup. Call us.
Pump
2 codesLow brew pressure Brew pressure low or drifting
Either the rotary pump is wearing or the OPV has drifted. The gauge tells the story: pressure rarely reaches 9 bar under load, or sags partway through the shot.
Likely causes
- Rotary pump vanes wearing below spec
- OPV drifted off its 9 bar setting
- Inlet restriction upstream of the pump
Try this first
- Watch the pump gauge during a shot and note where it settles.
- Confirm the water supply and any inlet filter aren't restricting flow.
- Note whether pressure sags only under back-to-back shots.
We measure brew pressure with a portafilter gauge, set the OPV back to 9 bar, and replace the pump if output stays below spec under load. Procon and Fluid-o-Tech replacements are readily available, so the fix rarely waits on parts. Call us.
Clogged gicleur Weak pour on one group
The gicleur, the small brass restrictor feeding each group, partially clogs with scale or coffee fines. One group goes weak while the others stay normal, which tells you the problem sits downstream of the pump.
Likely causes
- Scale and coffee fines part-blocking the gicleur orifice
- Eroded orifice altering the flow rate
- Expansion valve fouling behind the gicleur
Try this first
- Pull the same coffee on two groups to confirm only one runs weak.
- Back-flush the affected group with water, then with detergent.
- Time the shot against your recipe to measure how far off it is.
We pull the gicleur, clear it ultrasonically, and inspect the expansion valve alongside it, replacing either if eroded. Flow rate is verified shot to shot before sign-off. Call us.
Group head
2 codesGroup gasket leak Coffee weeping around the portafilter during extraction
Group gaskets compress with use until coffee starts weeping under the diffuser during extraction. It is routine wear on Portofino, Roma, Opus, Verona, and Maestro frames alike.
Likely causes
- Group gasket hardened and compressed with age
- Worn dispersion screen and screw
- Portafilter ears wearing into the group seat
Try this first
- Wipe the group seat clean of grounds and reseat the portafilter firmly.
- Back-flush the group and try the shot again.
- Test with a second portafilter to rule out a worn basket rim.
We back-flush the group, pull the dispersion screen and screw, fit a new gasket, and lubricate the portafilter ears. A dry seal is verified across multiple test shots before sign-off. Call us.
Blinded screen Dispersion screen scaled, weak or channeling shots
Scale and coffee oils gradually blind the dispersion screen on legacy Brasilia groups, starving the puck of even flow. There is no controller to flag it; the shots channel and weaken, and that is the alert.
Likely causes
- Scale and coffee oils blinding the screen
- Dimpled or deformed screen spreading water unevenly
- Buildup on the screw and group underside
Try this first
- Back-flush with detergent and brush the visible screen face.
- Compare shots across groups to confirm which screen is starving.
- Check your water filtration is in date.
The screen comes out for a cafiza soak and a brush-through, the screw and group underside are inspected, and a dimpled screen is replaced. On most hard-water installs this is an annual job. Call us.
Steam
1 codeSteam valve wear Steam wand dripping or valve cartridge worn
A worn steam valve cartridge, helped along by scale in the steam circuit, lets the wand drip between uses or feel weak at full open.
Likely causes
- Steam valve cartridge worn past sealing
- Scale through the steam circuit and tip
- Eroded valve seat on older Portofino and Excelsior frames
Try this first
- Open the valve fully and snap it closed once to clear the seat.
- Soak the steam tip and clear its holes.
- Purge the wand before and after every pitcher.
We rebuild the steam valve with a new cartridge kit, descale the steam pathway and the tip, and verify a clean on-off action. On older Portofino and Excelsior frames the whole valve body is sometimes replaced where the seat has eroded. Call us.
Water
2 codesLow-water lamp Low water warning with a full boiler
Scale builds on the boiler's mechanical level probe until it stops conducting, and the machine reads that as low water even with a full boiler. It is a standard fault on legacy Brasilia frames fed unsoftened municipal water.
Likely causes
- Scale coating the level probe until it stops conducting
- Autofill circuit not responding to the probe signal
- Unsoftened municipal feed accelerating scale buildup
Try this first
- Check the sight glass and confirm the boiler really is full.
- Confirm the water supply valve is open and any filter isn't exhausted.
- Power off for 30 seconds and back on so the level circuit re-reads.
We pull the probe, descale or replace it, verify the autofill circuit, and confirm the level reads correctly on refill. The sight glass gets cleaned at the same time, and we recommend a softener where the machine runs on unfiltered municipal supply. Call us.
Brew solenoid stuck No flow at the group, or continuous flow at idle
Brew solenoids on the Portofino, Roma, and Opus generations fail in one of two predictable ways: stuck open, giving continuous flow at idle, or stuck closed, giving no flow at all.
Likely causes
- Solenoid cartridge stuck open or closed
- Debris or scale holding the valve off its seat
- Solenoid coil failing under heat
Try this first
- Power off for 30 seconds and retry the group.
- Back-flush the group to clear debris from the valve.
- If water keeps running at idle, switch the machine off and close the supply.
The coil gets tested and the valve body comes apart. Cartridges are rebuilt or replaced, the solenoid is reseated with new gaskets, and three-way valves are checked for proper exhaust function. Call us.
Electronics
1 codeITP fault ITP electronics erratic dose or no response (Verona)
The Verona's ITP dose-control electronics are out of production, and the surviving boards drift with age. It shows up as erratic shot volumes, buttons that stop responding, or a frozen display.
Likely causes
- Aging ITP board components drifting out of spec
- Button membrane or ribbon connector wear
- Flow-meter signal noise confusing the dose logic
Try this first
- Power the machine off for a minute and back on to clear a frozen board.
- Test each group button and note which respond.
- Check whether manual brewing still works so service can be scheduled without downtime.
Diagnosis happens at board level. Where componentry is still available we repair the original ITP board; where it is not, a compatible volumetric controller from the Italian distribution channel takes its place. Flow meters are cleaned and recalibrated as part of the same job. Call us.
Sensors
1 codeDose drift Volumetric dose drift on ITP-equipped Verona
Mineral deposit coats the flow meter pulse wheels until the ITP controller reads an inconsistent count, and shot volumes start varying cycle to cycle.
Likely causes
- Mineral deposit coating the flow-meter pulse wheels
- Dropped pulses read by the ITP board as dose changes
- ITP board sensitivity drifting with age
Try this first
- Reprogram one dose and test whether it holds over ten shots.
- Weigh shots from each group to see which meters wander.
- Check the softener and filter are in date.
The flow meters come out for cleaning, the impellers are freed, and each dose is reprogrammed against a target volume by weight. A damaged flow meter is replaced, and ITP board sensitivity is verified before we leave. Call us.

FAQ
Brasilia error codes, frequently asked.
9 answers about resetting codes, recurring faults, firmware versions, and when DIY ends. If the recurring ones are descale or water warnings, start with the right Brasilia water filter.
Updated August 2026
What does Brasilia error code Pressurestat drift mean?
Every documented Brasilia fault we see is listed above, with its meaning, common causes, and what to try before calling a technician. If the code on your machine isn't on this page, call us with the exact display string and we'll work it out by phone.
Can I clear or reset a Brasilia error code myself?
Sometimes. Many Brasilia codes clear after a power cycle, a completed descale, or a counter reset through the service menu. Codes tied to a hardware fault (failed sensor, blown element, board issue) will return immediately and need a technician. Each code above lists what's safe to try first.
Why does the same Brasilia error keep coming back?
A code that returns after a power cycle is signalling a real fault, not a glitch. The underlying part (sensor, heating element, valve, motor, board) needs replacement. Repeat codes are diagnostic gold for us, so call with the exact code and any timing or symptom pattern you've noticed.
My Brasilia code isn't listed. Why?
Brasilia updates fault tables across firmware revisions and model generations, and not every code is documented publicly. We see codes in the field that aren't in any published list. Call us with the exact display string and the model and we'll work it out from our service log.
How fast can you get on-site if I'm stuck on an error code?
Most calls in Toronto and the immediate GTA get same-day on-site response. Tell us the code and the model when you book and we'll bring the right parts on the first visit so the repair finishes the same day.
Do I need to be authorized by Brasilia to reset an error code?
No. We're an independent service provider, not affiliated with Brasilia, and we work on machines outside the manufacturer's authorized network routinely. That independence lets us service older or out-of-warranty machines authorized networks may decline, and quote transparently every time.
Is it worth fixing an old Brasilia machine that keeps throwing codes?
Depends on the machine, the code, and the cost. We give you honest math on this. If repairs are starting to exceed roughly 50% of a refurbished replacement and multiple major systems are throwing codes, we'll tell you it's time to look at replacing rather than running up the repair bill.
Will independent service void my Brasilia warranty?
If your machine is under the manufacturer's warranty, independent service may affect coverage depending on Brasilia's specific terms. Try the manufacturer's authorized network first. If their response is slow or they decline coverage for your code, call us and we'll service it on standard terms.
How many Brasilia codes are documented on this page?
12 codes are documented above, organized by the system they affect. The list is compiled from manufacturer service literature, technician forums, and our own service log. We update it as new codes appear or firmware adds new states.
