Error code reference

Kees van der Westen error codes, what they mean and how to fix them.

Kees van der Westen machines rarely throw numbered error codes. They tell you something is wrong through the PID display, the feel of the paddle and joystick, and the quality in the cup. This page covers the service triggers we see most on the Spiritello, Speedster, Spirit, Slim Jim, Slim Jim Idrocompresso, and Mirage.

About these codes. Compiled from Kees van der Westen product research and our own service logs from specialty cafe calls. Updated August 2026

Boiler

2 codes
Group temp drift Per-group boiler temperature drift (Mirage Triplette, Veloce) Warning

One group is running its own race. The Mirage gives every group an independent brew boiler and PID, so scale, NTC sensor drift, or a controller offset can pull a single group out of sync while the others stay stable.

Likely causes

  • Scale in that group's brew boiler
  • NTC sensor drift on the affected group
  • PID controller offset shifted from calibration

Try this first

  1. Pull the same coffee on two groups and compare the cups.
  2. Check the affected group's set temperature against its display reading.
  3. Confirm the descale schedule is current.
When to call us

We measure each group with a calibrated reference probe, descale the affected boiler, and recalibrate the PID offset. Stability gets verified to within 0.3 C across a 10-shot test on each group. Call us.

Scaled steam boiler Steam boiler scaled out, weak steam and long heat-up Warning

Long heat-up, weak steam at the wand, and a pressurestat or PID that cycles without settling all point the same way: scale. Toronto water gets there eventually, even on softened machines.

Likely causes

  • Scale insulating the element and boiler walls
  • Element resistance drifting under deposit
  • Softener exhausted or missing on the feed

Try this first

  1. Time the morning warm-up against what the machine used to need.
  2. Check the softener or filter is connected and in date.
  3. Ease off back-to-back steaming and see whether pressure recovers.
When to call us

We descale the steam boiler, inspect the element resistance, and replace the element if it draws below spec. The level probe and sight glass get cleaned at the same time, and the pressure relief valve is function-tested. Call us.

Group head

2 codes
Group gasket leak Saturated group weeping during extraction Warning

No numbered code for this one; the machine tells you with drips down the diffuser or steam venting during pre-infusion. Group gaskets simply wear out under thousands of portafilter lock-ups.

Likely causes

  • Group gasket compressed past its service life
  • Worn dispersion screen and screw
  • Portafilter ears wearing into the seat

Try this first

  1. Wipe the group seat clean of grounds and reseat the portafilter firmly.
  2. Back-flush the group and try the shot again.
  3. Test with a second portafilter to rule out a worn basket rim.
When to call us

We back-flush the group, pull the dispersion screen and screw, and fit the correct Kees-spec gasket, then lubricate the portafilter ears and confirm a clean seal across several test shots. Call us.

Paddle sticking Pre-infusion paddle sticking or returning slowly Warning

A brew lever that catches mid-throw, or a pre-infusion ramp that feels rough, means the PTFE bushings in the paddle linkage have worn or dirt has worked into the pivot. It's the classic wear signal on the Mirage and Speedster.

Likely causes

  • Worn PTFE bushings in the paddle linkage
  • Dirt worked into the pivot
  • Microvalve wear behind the paddle

Try this first

  1. Work the paddle through a few slow full throws and feel where it catches.
  2. Wipe the visible linkage clean of coffee dust.
  3. Note whether the roughness is one group or all of them.
When to call us

We disassemble the paddle assembly, replace the bushings, clean the linkage, and lubricate the pivot with food-safe grease, then verify a smooth full throw from pre-infusion into brew. The microvalves behind the paddle get inspected while it's open. Call us.

Pressure

2 codes
Chamber leak-down Idrocompresso pressure chamber not charging or bleeding off Warning

The Mirage Idrocompresso drives its pressure profile from a sealed hydraulic chamber, and when the chamber seals wear, the profile flattens or the pre-charge bleeds away. Only the Idrocompresso shows this fault; no other Mirage variant has the chamber.

Likely causes

  • Chamber seals worn past holding the pre-charge
  • Pre-charge pressure bled below spec
  • Profile flattening as the chamber loses drive

Try this first

  1. Compare today's pressure profile against the shape your bar dialed in.
  2. Note how long the machine holds its profile after warm-up.
  3. Keep pulling shots normally; the fault doesn't worsen with use.
When to call us

We pressure-test the chamber, rebuild the seal kit, verify the pre-charge pressure, and confirm the profile against reference. This is Idrocompresso-specific work most shops will not recognise. Call us.

Profile off Pre-infusion pressure profile not matching reference Warning

A flat ramp, a missed start, or a curve that no longer matches the profile your bar dialed in: line-pressure pre-infusion depends on inlet pressure and brew solenoid timing, plus the needle valve on Idrocompresso machines.

Likely causes

  • Building inlet pressure changed or restricted
  • Brew solenoid timing off its mark
  • Needle valve drift on Idrocompresso machines

Try this first

  1. Ask whether anything changed on the building's water supply recently.
  2. Compare the current curve against the profile your bar recorded.
  3. Check the inlet filter isn't exhausted.
When to call us

We measure inlet pressure, verify the brew solenoid actuation, and check the pre-infusion needle valve on Idrocompresso models. The pressure curve is logged with a portafilter gauge before and after so the change is visible. Call us.

Steam

2 codes
Joystick wear Joystick steam control sloppy or sticking Warning

A joystick that catches mid-throw or returns slowly has worn its pivot bushing, which is what high-volume steaming does to it. Common across the Mirage, Spirit, and Speedster.

Likely causes

  • Pivot bushing worn from high-volume steaming
  • Steam microvalve seals degrading
  • Valve seat wear letting steam past

Try this first

  1. Work the joystick through its full travel and feel where it catches.
  2. Purge the wand and check whether steam shuts off fully.
  3. Note whether the stick returns to centre on its own.
When to call us

We disassemble the assembly, replace the bushing and the steam microvalve seals, and lubricate the linkage, then verify a clean on-off-on action. A valve leaking past the seat gets rebuilt in the same visit. Call us.

Wand running hot Cool-touch steam wand losing insulation Critical

No controller alert here either: the warning is the wand's surface getting hotter during steaming. A cracked or shifted inner sleeve has closed the insulating gap in the double wall.

Likely causes

  • Cracked inner sleeve in the double-wall wand
  • Shifted sleeve closing the insulating gap
  • Wear at the wand's pivot joint

Try this first

  1. Stop touching the wand bare-handed and use a cloth.
  2. Check whether the heat is even along the wand or concentrated in one spot.
  3. Warn the bar staff so nobody gets caught by it.
When to call us

We test the wand surface with a contact probe, replace the assembly if the insulation has failed, and verify a safe touch temperature through a full steam cycle. A burn hazard on a busy bar isn't worth waiting on. Call us.

Pump

1 code
Low brew pressure Brew pressure drifting low across all groups Warning

The gauge gives this one away: pressure that won't reach 9 bar under load, or sags during the shot, means rotary pump wear or a drifted OPV.

Likely causes

  • Rotary pump vanes wearing below spec
  • OPV drifted off its 9 bar setting
  • Inlet strainer or supply restriction

Try this first

  1. Watch the brew gauge during a shot and note where it settles.
  2. Confirm the water supply and any inlet filter aren't restricting flow.
  3. Note whether pressure sags only under back-to-back shots.
When to call us

We measure brew pressure at the portafilter with a calibrated gauge and adjust the OPV to 9 bar, replacing the pump if output stays below spec under load. The motor coupling and inlet strainer get checked while the chassis is open. Call us.

Electronics

1 code
PID misreading PID display drifting or showing erratic temperature Warning

The temperature reading has stopped telling the truth: either the NTC sensor is failing or steam migration has corroded the controller board contacts. On the Mirage and Spirit, the PID display usually flags this before the pour quality does.

Likely causes

  • NTC sensor failing out of its resistance range
  • Steam-corroded connector on the controller board
  • Controller board contacts degrading

Try this first

  1. Power the machine off for 30 seconds and back on.
  2. Compare the displayed temperature against how the shots actually taste.
  3. Note whether the reading jumps around or drifts steadily.
When to call us

We test the NTC against its resistance table at known reference temperatures, reseat or replace the connector, and fit a new sensor if it reads out of spec. Drift that survives a new sensor points to the controller board, which we quote separately. Call us.

Water

1 code
Hidden leak Water leak from under the machine, source not obvious Critical

Custom cabinetry hides the source of a leak better than a standard frame would. The usual culprits are the boiler manifold, a brass fitting weakened by scale, or the cup-warmer drain routing.

Likely causes

  • Boiler manifold seeping under pressure
  • Brass fitting weakened by scale
  • Cup-warmer drain routing letting water track

Try this first

  1. Switch the machine off and close the water supply valve.
  2. Dry the counter and set something under the drip point.
  3. Note whether the puddle grows at idle or only during use.
When to call us

We pressure-test the boiler, dry the chassis fully, and dye-trace the leak to its source, then re-flare or replace the fittings. The cabinet panel goes back on with its original screws and seals to protect the finish. Call us.

FAQ

Kees van der Westen error codes, frequently asked.

9 answers about resetting codes, recurring faults, firmware versions, and when DIY ends. If the recurring ones are descale or water warnings, start with the right Kees van der Westen water filter.

Updated August 2026

What does Kees van der Westen error code PID misreading mean?

Every documented Kees van der Westen fault we see is listed above, with its meaning, common causes, and what to try before calling a technician. If the code on your machine isn't on this page, call us with the exact display string and we'll work it out by phone.

Can I clear or reset a Kees van der Westen error code myself?

Sometimes. Many Kees van der Westen codes clear after a power cycle, a completed descale, or a counter reset through the service menu. Codes tied to a hardware fault (failed sensor, blown element, board issue) will return immediately and need a technician. Each code above lists what's safe to try first.

Why does the same Kees van der Westen error keep coming back?

A code that returns after a power cycle is signalling a real fault, not a glitch. The underlying part (sensor, heating element, valve, motor, board) needs replacement. Repeat codes are diagnostic gold for us, so call with the exact code and any timing or symptom pattern you've noticed.

My Kees van der Westen code isn't listed. Why?

Kees van der Westen updates fault tables across firmware revisions and model generations, and not every code is documented publicly. We see codes in the field that aren't in any published list. Call us with the exact display string and the model and we'll work it out from our service log.

How fast can you get on-site if I'm stuck on an error code?

Most calls in Toronto and the immediate GTA get same-day on-site response. Tell us the code and the model when you book and we'll bring the right parts on the first visit so the repair finishes the same day.

Do I need to be authorized by Kees van der Westen to reset an error code?

No. We're an independent service provider, not affiliated with Kees van der Westen, and we work on machines outside the manufacturer's authorized network routinely. That independence lets us service older or out-of-warranty machines authorized networks may decline, and quote transparently every time.

Is it worth fixing an old Kees van der Westen machine that keeps throwing codes?

Depends on the machine, the code, and the cost. We give you honest math on this. If repairs are starting to exceed roughly 50% of a refurbished replacement and multiple major systems are throwing codes, we'll tell you it's time to look at replacing rather than running up the repair bill.

Will independent service void my Kees van der Westen warranty?

If your machine is under the manufacturer's warranty, independent service may affect coverage depending on Kees van der Westen's specific terms. Try the manufacturer's authorized network first. If their response is slow or they decline coverage for your code, call us and we'll service it on standard terms.

How many Kees van der Westen codes are documented on this page?

11 codes are documented above, organized by the system they affect. The list is compiled from manufacturer service literature, technician forums, and our own service log. We update it as new codes appear or firmware adds new states.
