Single group, no idle minute

GTA-wide Kees van der Westen Speedster repair, usually fixed on the first visit.

When a Speedster stops, there's no second machine hiding behind it; the bar just stops. We repair this single-group regularly: paddle bushings, brew boiler PID drift, joystick steam, gasket seals. Describe the fault when you book and the technician arrives carrying the parts the symptom points to.

Kees van der Westen · Premium specialty espresso, single group, two-boiler

The Speedster.

The Speedster is the machine people photograph before they order. Kees's iconic single-group puts two boilers, paddle pre-infusion, and joystick steam inside a sculpted cabinet that has become the brand's calling card. Mechanically it's as serious as it looks: stable, precise, and built from parts that reward proper care. Most of the Speedsters we see need little more than gaskets, bushings, and an annual descale to stay perfect.

Speedster faults we diagnose

Common Speedster faults, and what we do about them.

Most Speedster calls trace to one of the faults below. Each entry covers the cause and how we resolve it at the machine.

Brew system & pressure 5 issues
!

Saturated group gasket leak

Wear item, plain and simple: group gaskets give up after enough lock-ups. We back-flush the group, fit a new gasket, lubricate the portafilter ears, and confirm a clean seal.

!

Paddle pre-infusion linkage stiff

A stiff paddle means the PTFE bushings are due. We strip the assembly, replace them, and lubricate so the pre-infusion sweep runs smooth again.

!

Dispersion screen scaled

Dispersion screens scale up gradually and start channelling shots. It's an annual job: pull, soak, inspect, and replace if dimpled.

!

Brew pressure drift

Pressure that won't sit where it should is the pump or the OPV. We measure at the portafilter and adjust or replace.

!

Pre-infusion curve not matching reference

If the pre-infusion curve no longer matches your reference, the cause is inlet pressure, the solenoid, or the expansion valve. We log the curve and identify which.

Water, boiler & heating 3 issues
!

Brew boiler PID drift

Brew boiler PID drift on a Speedster comes down to the NTC or the element. We test both, descale, recalibrate, and replace whichever is out of spec.

!

Steam boiler scaling

The steam boiler wants an annual descale. We do it, inspect the element, and replace it if it's drawing low.

!

Leak under the machine

An unexplained leak gets pressure-tested and dye-traced rather than guessed at. The failing component gets replaced, not patched.

Milk & steam 2 issues
!

Joystick steam control sloppy

Sloppy joystick action is bushing wear. Replacement and lubrication bring back the precise feel.

!

Cool-touch wand insulation failing

The cool-touch wand should rarely feel hot. If it does, we test the surface temperature and replace the assembly.

Electronics, grinder & other 5 issues
!

PID temperature reading erratic

An erratic temperature display points at the NTC or its connector. Test, reseat, replace: in that order.

!

Custom Kees electronics fault

Custom electronics deserve board-level diagnosis, not parts roulette. We find the actual fault and source through the European channel.

!

Sculpted cabinet cosmetic damage

The sculpted cabinet is the Speedster's trademark, so cosmetic damage matters here more than on most machines. We refit, polish, or source replacement panels through the factory to preserve the look.

!

Shot quality drift

Shot quality sliding with no error in sight means working the fundamentals: dispersion screen, grind, brew temperature, pre-infusion. We go through each until the espresso says we're done.

!

Older Speedster needing parts

Older Speedsters stay serviceable through the European specialty channel. We tell you the lead time before you commit.

Don't see your issue? Call (289) 217-3796 with a description of what's happening and any error codes on screen. We'll likely diagnose it before we arrive.

FAQ

Kees van der Westen Speedster, frequently asked.

21 answers covering service, repair, parts, installation, warranty, and edge cases.

Updated July 2026

Why is my Speedster's paddle sticking halfway through the sweep?

Worn PTFE bushings in the paddle linkage, almost every time. Dirt at the pivot accelerates it. We rebuild the linkage with fresh bushings and food-safe lubricant, and the sweep comes back light and even.

Why is the brew temperature on my Speedster drifting?

The brew boiler's PID can only be as honest as its NTC sensor and element, and scale undermines both. We test the sensor against its resistance table, descale the boiler, recalibrate the PID, and replace whichever part reads out of spec.

Can you repair the Speedster's cabinet without ruining the finish?

Yes, and we treat that as part of the job, not a courtesy. Panels come off and go back on with the original fasteners, replacements come through the factory, and polished surfaces get protected during the work. A Speedster should leave a repair looking like a Speedster.

How often should a Speedster be descaled?

Plan on a steam boiler descale annually, sooner on hard water or heavy volume. The brew boiler gets checked at the same time. Skipping it is how a Speedster ends up with weak steam, slow heat-up, and an element replacement that didn't need to happen.

Why does my Speedster's joystick steam control feel loose?

The pivot bushing wears with use and the lever starts to wander. We replace the bushing and the microvalve seals together, because once there's play in the pivot the seals are next. After the rebuild the control should snap on and off cleanly.

The cool-touch wand on my Speedster is getting hot. Is that normal?

No. The wand is double-walled, and it only stays cool while the inner sleeve holds its insulating gap. We confirm the failure with a contact probe and replace the wand assembly; it's a straightforward part swap.

What does the Speedster's two-boiler layout mean when something fails?

It means faults isolate nicely. Brew temperature problems point at the brew boiler circuit, steam problems at the steam boiler, and the two don't muddy each other's symptoms. That's part of why diagnosis on a Speedster is usually fast.

Is an older Speedster still worth repairing?

Almost always. The platform is built for decades, parts remain available through the European specialty channel, and a Speedster holds its value in a way few machines do. We'll quote the repair honestly, and if a machine is genuinely past saving, we'll say that instead.

Why has shot quality on my Speedster slipped when nothing seems broken?

Quality drifts through small things long before a part fails outright: a scaled dispersion screen, grind that's moved, brew temperature a degree off, pre-infusion timing that's shifted. We work through each in order and recalibrate. The cup usually comes back without a single major part.

How much does a repair visit cost?

Flat rate for the visit, parts billed at their actual cost on top. You'll hear the rate when you book, and for bigger jobs we quote in writing on-site before any work starts. No estimate that balloons mid-job.

How fast can you get here?

Same-day in most cases. Call in the morning and a technician is usually on-site before the day is out; calls placed later in the day book for the next morning. Urgent breakdowns get priority routing.

Which areas do you cover?

The GTA and most of the Golden Horseshoe: Toronto through Mississauga, Vaughan, and Markham, out to Oshawa, Hamilton, and Niagara. If you're not sure you're in range, call and we'll tell you straight.

Do I need a service contract?

No. We work call by call. Plenty of customers put us on a maintenance schedule eventually, but that's their choice after seeing the work, never a requirement.

Are the repairs warrantied?

Parts carry their manufacturer warranty, and we stand behind our labour: if the same fault recurs, call us and we'll review it. Specific terms are discussed upfront on each job, not promised in marketing copy.

Do you repair on-site or take the machine away?

On-site whenever possible, which is most of the time. If a job genuinely needs the bench, like a full boiler rebuild or major electronics work, we'll say so before anything leaves your building.

How do I book a service call?

Call us or send the form on this page. We confirm the machine, the fault, and a time window the same day. If it's urgent, say so and we'll route the nearest technician.

What happens on the first visit?

Diagnosis first: we confirm the fault, tell you what caused it, and quote the fix before touching a wrench. Most repairs finish in that same visit because the common wear parts ride on the truck.

Do you carry parts or order them in?

High-wear parts for the platforms we service constantly ride on the truck. Anything else we order, usually next-day where suppliers allow, and we tell you the lead time before committing you to anything.

My machine is older or out of production. Will you still look at it?

Usually, yes. We service legacy machines for as long as parts can be sourced, and we're honest when a repair stops making financial sense against a replacement. You get the math, you make the call.

Are you cheaper than the manufacturer's service network?

Often, but that's not the pitch. We quote against the actual work, not a factory pricing book, and we'll tell you when a manufacturer warranty claim is the better route. Transparency is the value; the price usually follows.

Can you train our staff so this doesn't happen again?

Yes, and we do it by default on the way out. Half of repeat faults trace back to skipped daily cleaning or wrong routine, so the technician walks your team through what actually matters before leaving.
