Profiling without electronics

Broken Kees van der Westen Slim Jim Idrocompresso? Expert repair across the GTA.

The Slim Jim Idrocompresso shapes its pressure curve hydraulically, which is wonderful until the curve starts drifting and nobody local will touch it. We repair this platform: profile and pre-infusion faults, gasket and bushing wear, boiler drift, joystick steam. Bring us the symptom and your reference profile, and we put the machine back on it.

Kees van der Westen · Current idrocompresso espresso machine

The Slim Jim Idrocompresso.

The Slim Jim Idrocompresso is the hydraulically profiled version of Kees's compact two-group. Instead of leaving the pressure curve to electronics, it shapes pre-infusion and ramp through a hydraulic path with its own needle valve and service points. The rest of the machine is familiar: per-group 0.8L brew boilers, a 10.5L steam boiler, saturated groups, joystick steam. Bars buy it for a curve they can feel, which is exactly why profile drift is the fault that gets reported fastest.

Typical useSpecialty cafes with tight bar footprint, premium hospitality
CapacityUp to 350 shots
Milk systemTwin joystick steam wands, cool-touch
GrindersBring-your-own grinder
BoilerMulti-boiler: one 10.5L insulated steam boiler plus a dedicated 0.8L PID-controlled brew boiler per group (316L stainless throughout). Heat-exchanger thermo-siphon inside the steam boiler pre-conditions feed water to the group boilers.

Slim Jim Idrocompresso faults we diagnose

Slim Jim Idrocompresso faults, from curve to boiler.

These Slim Jim Idrocompresso faults fill our service notes for the platform, each listed with its cause and our fix.

Brew system & pressure 5 issues
!

Saturated group gasket leak

Group gaskets give out from sheer repetition. New Kees-spec gaskets, a back-flush, and a verified seal on both groups put it right.

!

Paddle linkage sticking

When the paddle stops gliding, the PTFE bushings have worn. We disassemble, replace, and lubricate the linkage.

!

Dispersion screen scaled

Dispersion screens collect scale until shots channel. Annual service: pull, soak, inspect, replace where needed.

!

Brew pressure inconsistent

Brew pressure that won't hold steady is the pump or the OPV. We measure at the portafilter, then adjust or replace.

!

Pre-infusion curve drift

On the Idrocompresso, the pressure curve is the whole point, so drift gets taken seriously. We log the curve, check the solenoid, inlet pressure, and expansion valve, and identify exactly what moved.

Water, boiler & heating 3 issues
!

Brew boiler PID drift

Each group's 0.8L brew boiler runs its own PID, so temperature drift isolates to one circuit. We test the NTC and element, descale, recalibrate, and replace as needed.

!

Steam boiler scaling

Weak steam means the 10.5L steam boiler has scaled. We descale, check element resistance, and replace the element if it draws low.

!

Leak under the machine

Leaks hide well under Kees cabinetry. Pressure-testing and dye-tracing find the source; we replace the failing component and refit the panels properly.

Milk & steam 2 issues
!

Joystick steam sloppy

The joystick's pivot bushing wears under daily steaming. We fit a new one and the control tightens back up.

!

Cool-touch wand insulation failing

If the cool-touch wand runs hot, the inner sleeve has failed. We confirm with a temperature probe and replace the assembly.

Electronics, grinder & other 5 issues
!

PID display drift

A wandering display reading means the NTC or its connector. We test, reseat, and replace whichever is at fault.

!

Custom Kees electronics fault

Custom electronics faults get board-level diagnosis and parts sourced through the European channel, not generic substitutions.

!

Custom panel damage

Damaged panels are refitted or replaced through the factory, keeping the colour match exact.

!

Shot quality drift

When shot quality slips without a fault code, we work the sequence: dispersion screen, grind, brew temperature, pre-infusion. One of them is the answer.

!

Older Slim Jim needing parts

Older units stay on the road with parts through the European specialty channel. We quote lead times straight.

Don't see your issue? Call (289) 217-3796 with a description of what's happening and any error codes on screen. We'll likely diagnose it before we arrive. And if the same fault keeps returning, that's scale at work. The right Kees van der Westen water filter ends the repeat visits.

Updated August 2026

What makes the Slim Jim Idrocompresso different from the standard Slim Jim?

The profiling. The Idrocompresso shapes pre-infusion and the pressure ramp hydraulically, with its own needle valve and service points, where the standard machine leans on the pump and electronics. The boilers, groups, and steam side are shared between the two.

Why doesn't my Idrocompresso's pressure curve match what we dialed in?

The curve depends on inlet pressure, the brew solenoid, and the pre-infusion needle valve, and a shift in any of them shows up in the cup first. We log the actual curve with a portafilter gauge, find the deviation, and correct it. You get the before-and-after traces, not just our word.

Can a regular espresso technician service the Idrocompresso system?

Most have never seen one, and that's not a knock; the platform is rare. The hydraulic profile path has service points a generalist won't recognise, and guessing on a machine like this is expensive. We know the platform and we'll say plainly what needs doing.

Why is one group on my Slim Jim Idrocompresso running cooler than the other?

Each group's 0.8L brew boiler runs its own PID, so single-group drift points at that circuit: scale, the NTC sensor, or calibration. We test, descale, and recalibrate the affected boiler, replacing parts only when measurements call for it.

Does the hydraulic profiling need regular attention?

It mostly wants clean, properly treated water and a periodic check of the needle valve and pre-infusion behaviour. We verify the curve against your reference during service visits so drift gets caught early. Neglected water is the fastest way to shorten the system's life.

Why is steam pressure dropping on my Idrocompresso?

The 10.5L steam boiler scales like any other, and a scaled element can't keep up. We descale, check the element resistance, and replace it if it reads low. Weak steam is almost never a profiling problem.

The paddle feels rough mid-sweep. Is the profiling system failing?

Usually not; rough paddle action is most often worn PTFE bushings in the linkage rather than anything hydraulic. We rebuild the linkage first and then verify the pressure curve to rule out the rest. Nine times out of ten the bushings were the whole story.

What water should a Slim Jim Idrocompresso run on?

Filtered, and softened wherever the supply runs hard. Scale degrades the boilers and works against the precision the hydraulic profiling exists to deliver. We check the filtration and scale state on every visit because it decides the machine's future.

How many shots a day can the Slim Jim Idrocompresso handle?

Up to 350, the same rating as the standard Slim Jim. The profiling system doesn't reduce capacity; it just changes how the shot is shaped. At sustained high volume, the usual wear items simply arrive sooner.

How much does a repair visit cost?

Flat rate for the visit, parts billed at their actual cost on top. You'll hear the rate when you book, and for bigger jobs we quote in writing on-site before any work starts. No estimate that balloons mid-job.

How fast can you get here?

Same-day. Call in the morning and a technician is usually on-site before the day is out; calls placed later in the day book for the next morning. Urgent breakdowns get priority routing.

Which areas do you cover?

The GTA and most of the Golden Horseshoe: Toronto through Mississauga, Vaughan, and Markham, out to Oshawa, Hamilton, and Niagara. If you're not sure you're in range, call and we'll tell you straight.

Do I need a service contract?

No. We work call by call. Plenty of customers put us on a maintenance schedule eventually, but that's their choice after seeing the work, never a requirement.

Are the repairs warrantied?

Parts carry their manufacturer warranty, and we stand behind our labour: if the same fault recurs, call us and we'll review it. Specific terms are discussed upfront on each job, not promised in marketing copy.

Do you repair on-site or take the machine away?

On-site whenever possible, which is most of the time. If a job genuinely needs the bench, like a full boiler rebuild or major electronics work, we'll say so before anything leaves your building.

How do I book a service call?

Call us or send the form on this page. We confirm the machine, the fault, and a time window the same day. If it's urgent, say so and we'll route the nearest technician.

What happens on the first visit?

Diagnosis first: we confirm the fault, tell you what caused it, and quote the fix before touching a wrench. Most repairs finish in that same visit because the common wear parts ride on the truck.

Do you carry parts or order them in?

High-wear parts for the platforms we service constantly ride on the truck. Anything else we order, usually next-day where suppliers allow, and we tell you the lead time before committing you to anything.

My machine is older or out of production. Will you still look at it?

Usually, yes. We service legacy machines for as long as parts can be sourced, and we're honest when a repair stops making financial sense against a replacement. You get the math, you make the call.

Are you cheaper than the manufacturer's service network?

Often, but that's not the pitch. We quote against the actual work, not a factory pricing book, and we'll tell you when a manufacturer warranty claim is the better route. Transparency is the value; the price usually follows.

Can you train our staff so this doesn't happen again?

Yes, and we do it by default on the way out. Half of repeat faults trace back to skipped daily cleaning or wrong routine, so the technician walks your team through what actually matters before leaving.

Your Kees van der Westen Slim Jim Idrocompresso deserves a specialist.

Describe the drift and we arrive with the right seals and gauges.
