Kees van der Westen · Premium specialty espresso, hand-built, independent boiler per group

The Mirage.

The Mirage is the workhorse of the Kees range, built in 2-group Veloce and 3-group Triplette forms. It's the Kees we see most often, usually as the centrepiece of a serious specialty bar. Each group runs its own brew boiler and PID, with paddle-controlled line-pressure pre-infusion, saturated groups, and joystick cool-touch steam. On the bench it's predictable: paddle bushings, group gaskets, and single-group temperature drift make up most of the work, and the Duetto trim editions share the same platform underneath.

Typical useThird-wave specialty cafes, micro-roaster flagship bars, premium hospitality, competition coffee programs
CapacityUp to 700 shots depending on group count
Milk systemTwin joystick steam wands, cool-touch
GrindersBring-your-own grinder
BoilerIndependent brew boiler per group plus dedicated steam boiler

Mirage faults we diagnose

What fails on a Mirage, and how we fix it.

These are the Mirage faults that actually generate service calls, with the usual cause and the fix for each one.

Brew system & pressure 5 issues
!

Saturated group gasket leak

Cafe volume chews through group gaskets. We back-flush, fit a new Kees-spec gasket, lubricate the portafilter ears, and verify a clean seal across test shots.

!

Paddle pre-infusion linkage stiff

Fines in the pivot or worn PTFE bushings make the paddle stiff. We disassemble, replace the bushings, clean and lubricate, and check the action through the full throw.

!

Dispersion screen scaled or worn

Dispersion screens scale and dimple over a year of service. We pull each one, soak it in cafiza, inspect, and replace where needed.

!

Brew pressure low or drifting

Rotary pumps wear and OPVs drift. We measure at the portafilter, set the OPV back to 9 bar, and replace the pump if it's below spec under load.

!

Pre-infusion pressure curve not matching reference

When the pre-infusion curve stops matching your reference, the cause is inlet pressure, brew solenoid timing, or the expansion valve. We log the curve with a portafilter gauge and replace the component that's failing.

Water, boiler & heating 3 issues
!

Per-group boiler PID drift

Every Mirage group carries its own brew boiler and PID, so one group can drift while its neighbours hold. We measure each with a reference probe, descale the affected boiler, recalibrate the PID, and replace the sensor or element if it reads out of spec.

!

Steam boiler scaling

Toronto water makes an annual steam boiler descale non-negotiable. We descale, inspect element resistance, and replace the element if it's drawing low.

!

Leak under the machine

Leaks get found, not guessed at. We pressure-test each circuit, dry the chassis fully, dye-trace the source, and re-flare or replace the fittings.

Milk & steam 2 issues
!

Joystick steam control sloppy

Pivot bushings wear until the joystick feels loose. We replace the bushings and the steam microvalve seals, lubricate, and verify the action is crisp again.

!

Cool-touch wand insulation failing

A cracked or shifted inner sleeve kills the cool-touch insulation. We probe the surface temperature during steaming and replace the wand assembly if it's failed.

Electronics, grinder & other 6 issues
!

PID display drifting

NTC drift or a corroded connector makes the display wander. We test, reseat, and replace as needed.

!

Custom Kees electronics fault

Kees electronics are custom, so we diagnose at board level with platform knowledge and source parts through the European specialty channel.

!

Custom cabinetry panel damage

Cabinet panels go back together with the original Kees fasteners, factory-sourced replacements where needed, and the RAL colour match preserved.

!

Shot quality dropping despite clean diagnostics

Sometimes the machine tests clean and the cup still disagrees. We work through the dispersion screen, grind, brew temperature offset, and pre-infusion timing, then recalibrate.

!

Cup warmer not heating

A cold cup warmer is the element or its thermal cut-out. We test the resistance and replace the failed part.

!

Older Veloce needing parts

Parts for older Veloces come through the European specialty channel, and we keep common service items in stock.

Don't see your issue? Call (289) 217-3796 with a description of what's happening and any error codes on screen. We'll likely diagnose it before we arrive. And if the same fault keeps returning, that's scale at work. The right Kees van der Westen water filter ends the repeat visits.

FAQ

Kees van der Westen Mirage, frequently asked.

21 answers covering service, repair, parts, installation, warranty, and edge cases.

Updated August 2026

Why is one group on my Mirage pouring hotter or colder than the others?

Each Mirage group has its own brew boiler and PID, so one group can drift while its neighbours hold steady. The usual causes are scale in that boiler, a drifting NTC sensor, or a controller offset. We measure every group against a calibrated reference probe and bring the stray one back to within 0.3 C across a 10-shot test.

Why does the paddle on my Mirage feel stiff or gritty?

The paddle linkage runs on PTFE bushings, and they wear under cafe volume; coffee fines working into the pivot make it worse. We strip the assembly, fit new bushings, clean and lubricate the linkage, and check the microvalves behind the paddle while it's open. The full sweep should feel light and even again before we leave.

Do the Mirage Veloce, Triplette, and Duetto need different service?

No. The Veloce is the 2-group, the Triplette the 3-group, and the Duetto a cosmetic edition, but they share one mechanical platform. Procedures and parts are identical; the only real difference on a service call is how many groups we test.

Why is my Mirage's steam joystick loose or weeping steam?

High-volume steaming wears the pivot bushing first, then the slop starts working on the microvalve seals. We rebuild the assembly with new bushings and seals and verify a crisp on-off-on action. Left alone, a weeping valve eventually damages the seat, which turns a small rebuild into a bigger one.

How often does a Mirage need to be descaled?

The steam boiler wants a descale roughly annually on municipal water, and harder supplies shorten that. The per-group brew boilers scale more slowly but drift in temperature when they do. Watch for slow heat-up, weak steam, or one group wandering off its setpoint; those are the machine's way of asking.

Why doesn't my Mirage's pre-infusion match the profile we dialed in?

Line-pressure pre-infusion depends on your inlet pressure, the brew solenoid's timing, and the expansion valve. If any of the three moves, the curve moves with it. We log the curve with a portafilter gauge, find the component that shifted, and log it again after the fix so you can see the profile is back.

Can you fix the cup warmer on a Mirage?

Yes, and it's usually quick. A dead cup warmer is either the element or its thermal cut-out, and a resistance test tells us which. The part gets replaced on the spot when stock allows.

Is the Mirage Idrocompresso the same machine as the Mirage?

Mechanically, no. The Idrocompresso drives its pressure profile from a sealed hydraulic chamber instead of relying on the pump and electronics, and it has its own service points because of it. We service both platforms, and we'll tell you on the phone which one you actually have if you're not sure.

How long should a Mirage last in a busy cafe?

Twenty years and more is realistic with proper care; that's what the machine is built for. Water treatment and routine gasket, bushing, and descale work decide whether yours gets there. The Mirages that fail early are almost always the ones that ran hard water with no softening.

How much does a repair visit cost?

Flat rate for the visit, parts billed at their actual cost on top. You'll hear the rate when you book, and for bigger jobs we quote in writing on-site before any work starts. No estimate that balloons mid-job.

How fast can you get here?

Same-day. Call in the morning and a technician is usually on-site before the day is out; calls placed later in the day book for the next morning. Urgent breakdowns get priority routing.

Which areas do you cover?

The GTA and most of the Golden Horseshoe: Toronto through Mississauga, Vaughan, and Markham, out to Oshawa, Hamilton, and Niagara. If you're not sure you're in range, call and we'll tell you straight.

Do I need a service contract?

No. We work call by call. Plenty of customers put us on a maintenance schedule eventually, but that's their choice after seeing the work, never a requirement.

Are the repairs warrantied?

Parts carry their manufacturer warranty, and we stand behind our labour: if the same fault recurs, call us and we'll review it. Specific terms are discussed upfront on each job, not promised in marketing copy.

Do you repair on-site or take the machine away?

On-site whenever possible, which is most of the time. If a job genuinely needs the bench, like a full boiler rebuild or major electronics work, we'll say so before anything leaves your building.

How do I book a service call?

Call us or send the form on this page. We confirm the machine, the fault, and a time window the same day. If it's urgent, say so and we'll route the nearest technician.

What happens on the first visit?

Diagnosis first: we confirm the fault, tell you what caused it, and quote the fix before touching a wrench. Most repairs finish in that same visit because the common wear parts ride on the truck.

Do you carry parts or order them in?

High-wear parts for the platforms we service constantly ride on the truck. Anything else we order, usually next-day where suppliers allow, and we tell you the lead time before committing you to anything.

My machine is older or out of production. Will you still look at it?

Usually, yes. We service legacy machines for as long as parts can be sourced, and we're honest when a repair stops making financial sense against a replacement. You get the math, you make the call.

Are you cheaper than the manufacturer's service network?

Often, but that's not the pitch. We quote against the actual work, not a factory pricing book, and we'll tell you when a manufacturer warranty claim is the better route. Transparency is the value; the price usually follows.

Can you train our staff so this doesn't happen again?

Yes, and we do it by default on the way out. Half of repeat faults trace back to skipped daily cleaning or wrong routine, so the technician walks your team through what actually matters before leaving.
