Kees van der Westen · multi-group specialty espresso machine

The Spirit.

The Spirit Single Group packs the Spirit's two-boiler-per-group architecture into a one-group machine. It exists for rooms that pour serious espresso at modest volume: boutique bars, premium offices, restaurant programs that refuse to compromise on the single coffee they serve. Saturated group, paddle pre-infusion, joystick steam, all of it identical in feel to its bigger siblings. Service-wise it wants the same respect too: correct gaskets, clean bushings, and water that meets spec.

Spirit faults we diagnose

What goes wrong on a Spirit Single Group?

Below are the Spirit Single Group faults we actually get called for, with the cause behind each and the way we clear it.

Brew system & pressure 5 issues
!

Saturated group gasket leak

Gaskets are the first wear item on any saturated group. We back-flush, fit a fresh Kees-spec gasket, and verify a clean seal across test shots before we leave.

!

Paddle linkage sticking

The paddle rides on PTFE bushings that wear with use. We disassemble the linkage, fit new bushings, and lubricate the pivot so the full throw feels right again.

!

Dispersion screen scaled

Scale closes a dispersion screen slowly enough that nobody notices until shots channel. Once a year we pull it, soak it, inspect for dimpling, and replace it if it's past saving.

!

Brew pressure drift

Low or wandering brew pressure traces to the pump or the OPV. We measure at the portafilter, adjust what can be adjusted, and replace what can't.

!

Pre-infusion not matching reference

Line-pressure pre-infusion depends on inlet pressure, the solenoid, and the expansion valve. We log the curve, find which of the three is off, and correct it.

Water, boiler & heating 3 issues
!

Per-group brew boiler drift

The Spirit runs two-boiler-per-group architecture, so brew temperature drift points at one circuit rather than the whole machine. We test the affected boiler's NTC, descale it, recalibrate the PID, and replace anything reading out of spec.

!

Steam boiler scaling

Steam fades as scale builds on the element and boiler walls. A full descale, an element resistance check, and a replacement element if it draws low bring the pressure back.

!

Leak under the machine

Water under the machine rarely shows its source on a quick look. We pressure-test the circuits, run a dye-trace, and replace the failing component.

Milk & steam 2 issues
!

Joystick steam control sloppy

Joystick steam goes sloppy when the pivot bushing wears. New bushings and fresh lubrication restore the crisp action the control was designed for.

!

Cool-touch wand insulation failing

A cool-touch wand that's warming up has lost its insulating gap. We test the surface temperature and replace the wand assembly if the insulation has failed.

Electronics, grinder & other 5 issues
!

PID temperature reading erratic

Erratic PID readings come from the NTC sensor or its connector. We test both, reseat the connector, and replace the sensor if it's out of spec.

!

Custom Kees electronics fault

Kees electronics are custom, so board faults need platform knowledge rather than guesswork. We diagnose at the board level and source replacements through the European channel.

!

Custom panel issue

Panels on a Kees are custom-ordered, so cosmetic damage is worth fixing properly. We refit or replace through factory parts and keep the finish intact.

!

Shot quality drift

When shots drift with no obvious fault, the suspects are the dispersion screen, the grind, brew temperature, and pre-infusion. We work through each in order until the cup comes back.

!

Older Spirit needing parts

Parts for older Spirits come through the European specialty channel. Lead times are real, but the platform stays supported.

FAQ

Kees van der Westen Spirit, frequently asked.

21 answers covering service, repair, parts, installation, warranty, and edge cases.

Updated July 2026

Why is the brew temperature on my Spirit Single Group drifting?

The Spirit runs two-boiler-per-group architecture, so brew drift points at the brew circuit specifically: its NTC sensor, its element, or scale in the boiler. We test the sensor, descale, recalibrate the PID, and replace anything out of spec. Stability is verified across test shots before we call it done.

Why is the paddle on my Spirit stiff?

The PTFE bushings in the paddle linkage wear with every sweep, and eventually the lever catches. A rebuild with new bushings and proper lubrication restores it. We inspect the microvalves behind the paddle in the same visit.

What's the difference between the Spirit Single Group and the Speedster?

They share DNA: the Spirit is the multi-boiler refinement of the Speedster's architecture, brought down to one group in this version. The Speedster's sculpted cabinet is the visible difference; underneath, service procedures are very close. We work on both regularly.

Can a Spirit Single Group handle a full cafe?

It's rated for up to 200 shots a day, which suits a boutique bar, an office, or a restaurant program comfortably. The honest limit is the single group: one portafilter means a queue forms differently than on a 2-group. If your volume has outgrown it, we'll say so rather than keep patching the symptom.

Why doesn't my Spirit's pre-infusion feel right anymore?

Line-pressure pre-infusion shifts when inlet pressure, the brew solenoid, or the expansion valve shifts. We log the pressure curve at the portafilter, identify which component moved, and correct it. You see the before-and-after curve, not just an invoice.

What's involved in fixing a loose joystick on a Spirit?

We strip the assembly, replace the pivot bushing and microvalve seals, lubricate, and verify the action. It's an hour of careful work rather than a major job. Waiting too long is what makes it expensive, because a leaking valve eventually takes the seat with it.

How long do group gaskets last on a saturated group?

It depends entirely on lock-up count: a busy bar can need one annually, a quiet office every few years. The signs are drips down the diffuser and steam venting during pre-infusion. Replacement with the Kees-spec part is quick, and we verify the seal across several shots.

Does the Spirit Single Group need special water treatment?

Filtered water is the minimum, and softening where the supply runs hard. Scale attacks the brew boiler's accuracy first, which on a machine bought for temperature stability is the cruelest place to lose it. We check filtration and scale condition on every visit.

Is an older Spirit still serviceable?

Yes. Parts come through the European specialty channel, and the platform was built to be rebuilt rather than replaced. Lead times on factory items are real, so on an older machine it pays to fix small faults before they ground the bar.

How much does a repair visit cost?

Flat rate for the visit, parts billed at their actual cost on top. You'll hear the rate when you book, and for bigger jobs we quote in writing on-site before any work starts. No estimate that balloons mid-job.

How fast can you get here?

Same-day in most cases. Call in the morning and a technician is usually on-site before the day is out; calls placed later in the day book for the next morning. Urgent breakdowns get priority routing.

Which areas do you cover?

The GTA and most of the Golden Horseshoe: Toronto through Mississauga, Vaughan, and Markham, out to Oshawa, Hamilton, and Niagara. If you're not sure you're in range, call and we'll tell you straight.

Do I need a service contract?

No. We work call by call. Plenty of customers put us on a maintenance schedule eventually, but that's their choice after seeing the work, never a requirement.

Are the repairs warrantied?

Parts carry their manufacturer warranty, and we stand behind our labour: if the same fault recurs, call us and we'll review it. Specific terms are discussed upfront on each job, not promised in marketing copy.

Do you repair on-site or take the machine away?

On-site whenever possible, which is most of the time. If a job genuinely needs the bench, like a full boiler rebuild or major electronics work, we'll say so before anything leaves your building.

How do I book a service call?

Call us or send the form on this page. We confirm the machine, the fault, and a time window the same day. If it's urgent, say so and we'll route the nearest technician.

What happens on the first visit?

Diagnosis first: we confirm the fault, tell you what caused it, and quote the fix before touching a wrench. Most repairs finish in that same visit because the common wear parts ride on the truck.

Do you carry parts or order them in?

High-wear parts for the platforms we service constantly ride on the truck. Anything else we order, usually next-day where suppliers allow, and we tell you the lead time before committing you to anything.

My machine is older or out of production. Will you still look at it?

Usually, yes. We service legacy machines for as long as parts can be sourced, and we're honest when a repair stops making financial sense against a replacement. You get the math, you make the call.

Are you cheaper than the manufacturer's service network?

Often, but that's not the pitch. We quote against the actual work, not a factory pricing book, and we'll tell you when a manufacturer warranty claim is the better route. Transparency is the value; the price usually follows.

Can you train our staff so this doesn't happen again?

Yes, and we do it by default on the way out. Half of repeat faults trace back to skipped daily cleaning or wrong routine, so the technician walks your team through what actually matters before leaving.

Your Kees van der Westen Spirit deserves a specialist.
