When a Schaerer hits a fault it puts a numbered code on the screen, grouped roughly by subsystem: brew unit codes in the 10s, water in the 20s, grinders in the 30s, milk in the 40s, cleaning in the 50s, boiler in the 60s, and electronics in the 70s. Below are the codes we meet most on the Coffee Soul, Coffee Skye, Coffee Club, and Coffee Art families, plus the older installed-base machines, with what each one means and what's safe to try before you call anyone.

Boiler
5 codes60 Coffee boiler temperature fault
The coffee boiler is not reaching, or is overshooting, its target brew temperature. The control board reads the NTC temperature sensor and decides the boiler is out of range. The machine locks out coffee dispensing to protect the heating element.
Likely causes
- Failed NTC temperature sensor on the boiler
- Heat shield or scale insulating the element from the sensor
- Degraded heating element no longer hitting setpoint
- Sticking relay on the controller board
Try this first
- Power-cycle from the main switch, not the standby button. Leave it off for 30 seconds.
- Confirm the descale cycle is current. If it's overdue, run it.
- If the code clears briefly then returns, note how long it took. That timing helps the technician.
If the code returns within minutes of a power cycle, or returns after a completed descale, the sensor or element is the culprit. Call us.
61 Steam boiler temperature fault
Same fault family as code 60, but on the steam side. The steam boiler isn't holding its target temperature window. On SteamBoost-equipped Coffee Soul and Coffee Prime, this disables steam-based drinks.
Likely causes
- Failed steam-side NTC sensor
- Scale buildup in the steam boiler reducing heat transfer
- Steam heating element near end of life
- Loose or corroded sensor connector
Try this first
- Power-cycle from the main switch.
- Check whether non-steam drinks (espresso, hot water) still work. They usually do, which confirms the steam side as the problem.
- Run the steam circuit descale if your machine has the menu option.
Steam boiler element replacements are not DIY on this platform. If the code persists, call us.
62 Boiler heat-up timeout
The boiler took too long to reach operating temperature from cold. The machine gives up rather than run the element continuously and risk overheating. Often seen after a long power-off or first-thing-in-the-morning start-up.
Likely causes
- Heavily scaled boiler insulating the element
- Element degradation reducing wattage output
- Failed safety thermostat (Klixon) cutting power early
- Low voltage at the outlet under load
Try this first
- Power-cycle and try again with the machine warm if possible.
- Check the descaling interval. Two missed descales is enough to cause this.
- Confirm the outlet is on a dedicated circuit and not sharing with high-draw equipment.
If the descale is current and the code keeps coming back at cold start, the element or Klixon needs testing. Book a service call.
63 Boiler pressure fault
Pressure on the steam boiler is outside the expected range. Either too low (no steam available) or too high (safety risk). The machine locks out steam dispensing immediately.
Likely causes
- Failed pressure sensor or pressure switch
- Blocked safety valve sticking closed
- Scale obstructing the pressure sensor port
- Pump or fill valve issue causing wrong water level
Try this first
- Power-cycle from the main switch.
- Listen for the pump cycling normally on start-up. Unusual pump behaviour is a clue.
- Do not attempt to access the boiler. Pressurized components are dangerous.
Pressure faults are technician-only. Call us before running another cycle.
65 Hot water boiler temperature fault
On machines with a separate hot water boiler (Coffee Soul, Coffee Prime tea/hot water configurations), the dedicated hot water tank is out of temperature range. Coffee dispensing usually still works.
Likely causes
- Hot water boiler NTC sensor failure
- Scale in the hot water circuit
- Hot water element degradation
- Sensor harness loose at the connector
Try this first
- Power-cycle and confirm coffee drinks still dispense normally.
- If you have a hot-water rinse function, try it and listen for normal pump and valve actuation.
- Note the descale status.
If coffee works but hot water won't dispense, that's a clean diagnosis for a technician visit. Book it.
Brew unit
6 codes10 Brew unit blocked / motor stalled
The brew unit motor tried to move the brew piston and the encoder didn't register the expected revolutions. Translation: something is physically jamming the brew unit, or the motor itself is failing.
Likely causes
- Grind buildup on the brew piston or cylinder walls
- Worn or torn brew screen catching on the piston
- Coffee grounds compacted from a missed grounds-empty cycle
- Worn gear or motor at end of life
Try this first
- Remove the brew unit per the on-screen instructions, rinse it under warm water, and clean off any visible grind buildup.
- Inspect the brew screens (top and bottom) for tears.
- Reseat the brew unit firmly and run a rinse cycle.
If cleaning doesn't resolve it, or you see grounds-in-cup along with the code, the screens or piston seals need replacing. Call us.
11 Brew unit not detected / home position fault
The brew unit's home-position sensor isn't reporting back to the controller. The machine either thinks the brew unit is missing or that it didn't return to start position after the last cycle.
Likely causes
- Brew unit not seated correctly after the last clean
- Debris on the reed sensor that detects brew unit position
- Failed home-position sensor
- Cable disconnected at the sensor
Try this first
- Power off, remove the brew unit, and reseat it firmly. You should feel it lock into position.
- Wipe the area where the brew unit meets the chassis with a clean cloth.
- Power-cycle and run a rinse cycle.
Most reseat-and-restart cases clear in 5 minutes. If yours doesn't, the sensor needs replacing.
12 Grounds container missing or full
The machine cannot detect the grounds container, or it has counted enough pucks to consider the container full. Coffee dispensing is blocked until the container is emptied and reinserted.
Likely causes
- Grounds container actually full
- Container not pushed all the way in
- Failed magnetic detection switch on the container slot
- Internal counter not resetting when container is emptied
Try this first
- Pull the grounds container, empty it, rinse it, and reinsert firmly.
- Confirm the drip tray and grounds container are both clicked into position.
- Wait 5 seconds for the counter to reset before trying a drink.
If the code stays on with the container clearly empty and inserted, the magnetic switch needs testing. Book a service call.
13 Drip tray missing or full
The drip tray sensor isn't reporting the tray as present and empty. The machine blocks dispensing rather than risk an overflow.
Likely causes
- Drip tray not seated all the way
- Drip tray actually full
- Drip tray level sensor failed or fouled with coffee residue
- Magnetic switch failed
Try this first
- Empty the drip tray and reinsert it firmly until it clicks.
- Wipe the underside of the tray and the sensor area in the chassis.
- Wait 5 seconds for the sensor to register the empty state.
If the sensor reads full with an empty tray, it's failed and needs replacement.
22 Brew pressure out of range
The machine measured brew pressure during the last shot and it fell outside the acceptable window. Often a transient warning rather than a hard fault.
Likely causes
- Grind drift over time after burr wear
- Pump output degrading with age
- Worn brew piston seal letting pressure bypass
- Pressure regulator out of spec
Try this first
- Note whether the next few drinks dispense at the right volume and look normal in the cup.
- If the issue is recent, check whether anyone changed grind settings or bean type.
- Run the daily clean and rinse cycle.
If the warning is paired with weak or watery coffee, the pump or seals need attention. Schedule a tune-up.
Brew unit removal Brew unit removal request
Scheduled prompt asking the operator to remove and clean the brew unit. Not a fault. The machine has counted enough cycles since the last weekly clean.
Likely causes
- Weekly clean schedule reached
- Counter triggered by cup count, not time
Try this first
- Remove the brew unit per the on-screen prompt.
- Rinse under warm water, brush off grind residue.
- Reseat and acknowledge the prompt to reset the counter.
Only call if the prompt won't dismiss after a proper clean.
Milk system
4 codes40 Milk system flow fault
The BestFoam or ProFoam milk system tried to dispense and the flow sensor didn't register milk movement. Either no milk is reaching the foam chamber, or the air-to-milk ratio is wrong.
Likely causes
- Milk container empty
- Milk line kinked or disconnected
- Milk pump worn or air-locked
- Foam-chamber pathway blocked with dried milk residue
Try this first
- Confirm milk container has milk and the line is fully seated.
- Run the daily milk cleaning cycle if it hasn't been done.
- Disconnect and reconnect the milk line at the machine end to clear air.
If the daily clean and reseat don't resolve it, the milk pump or foam chamber needs disassembly and service.
41 Milk temperature fault
Milk dispensed cold or significantly under target temperature. On BestFoam systems with milk heating, the heat exchanger or temperature sensor is the suspect.
Likely causes
- Scale in the milk heat-exchange path
- Failed milk temperature sensor
- Steam circuit problem indirectly affecting milk heating
- Wrong milk-temperature setpoint after a recent menu change
Try this first
- Check the menu for the milk-temperature setting and confirm it hasn't been changed.
- Run the daily milk clean.
- Test a non-milk steam drink to isolate whether steam itself is working.
Cold-milk complaints from baristas are persistent and frustrating. Book us in and we'll calibrate end to end.
42 Milk cooler temperature fault
The under-counter or side-mounted milk cooler is reading outside the safe temperature range. Milk drinks are usually blocked until resolved for food-safety reasons.
Likely causes
- Cooler door not closing properly
- Cooler condenser dusty or blocked
- Failed cooler thermostat
- Refrigerant leak (less common)
Try this first
- Confirm the milk cooler door seals properly.
- Vacuum the condenser coils if accessible.
- Check whether the cooler is on a circuit that may have tripped.
If the cooler is the source of the fault, that's a refrigeration call. Tell us when you book so we bring the right gear.
43 Milk pump overload
The milk pump is drawing more current than expected. Usually a blockage downstream forcing the pump to work against pressure.
Likely causes
- Dried milk residue in the foam chamber narrowing the pathway
- Worn pump impeller
- Failed pump motor
- Sticking solenoid valve in the milk circuit
Try this first
- Run the daily milk clean cycle with fresh cleaner.
- Inspect the milk line and foam chamber for visible residue.
- Power off before the third attempt to avoid damaging the pump.
Pump overloads escalate fast. Don't retry repeatedly. Call us.
Grinder
3 codes30 Left grinder no beans or blocked
The left grinder ran for too long without dose feedback, meaning either the hopper is empty or something is blocking the grinder throat.
Likely causes
- Hopper empty (most common)
- Beans bridging above the grinder throat
- Small stone or foreign object jammed in the burrs
- Failed grinder motor or dose sensor
Try this first
- Open the hopper and confirm bean level. Tap the hopper to dislodge any bridging.
- Look down the throat for any obvious foreign objects.
- If you suspect a stone, do not run the grinder again. Call us.
If the hopper is full and beans flow freely but the code persists, the burrs may be damaged or the motor may be failing.
31 Right grinder no beans or blocked
Same fault as code 30, but on the right grinder. Twin-grinder machines (Coffee Soul, Coffee Skye, Coffee Art, and installed-base Coffee Prime configurations) use this code to isolate the fault to the second bean path.
Likely causes
- Right hopper empty
- Beans bridging or stale beans clumping
- Foreign object in the right grinder
- Right grinder motor or burr issue
Try this first
- Check the right hopper and refill if needed.
- Inspect for bridging or foreign objects.
- If only one bean type is being used, consider whether the right grinder needs to be active at all.
Same threshold as code 30. If beans flow and the code stays, call us.
32 Grinder current draw fault
The grinder is drawing more current than expected during a grind cycle. The machine cuts power to the motor to prevent damage.
Likely causes
- Foreign object jamming the burrs
- Burrs worn to the point of binding
- Failed grinder motor
- Grind set too fine for the burr condition
Try this first
- Power off immediately. Do not retry repeatedly. You risk burning out the motor.
- If you can safely look down the throat with the machine off and unplugged, check for stones.
- Adjust grind coarser before retrying.
Repeated current faults will kill the motor. Call us before the third attempt.
Electronics
2 codes70 Touchscreen / display fault
The control board lost communication with the touchscreen, or the touch digitizer is misreading. On the 10 and 12-inch Coffee Soul displays, this is the symptom you see if a ribbon cable comes loose.
Likely causes
- Loose ribbon connector between display and controller
- Failed display module
- Firmware update interrupted
- Touch digitizer hardware failure
Try this first
- Power-cycle from the main switch with a 60-second wait.
- Note whether the screen lights up at all. No backlight is a different fault than unresponsive touch.
- Do not attempt firmware recovery without a known-good image.
Display module work requires opening the head. Call us before doing anything else.
71 Firmware / software fault
The machine detected corrupted firmware or a failed update. May boot-loop or sit on a startup screen.
Likely causes
- Power interruption during a recent firmware update
- Corrupted flash memory
- Failed controller board
- Mismatched software versions between display and controller

- Power-cycle once and wait 90 seconds for full boot.
- Do not pull the plug during start-up.
- Do not attempt to reflash without service tools.

Water
3 codes20 Water tank empty / refill water
On tank-fed machines, the water reservoir is empty. On mains-connected machines, this can also indicate the supply line is closed or starved.
Likely causes
- Water tank actually empty
- Mains shut-off valve closed
- Float sensor stuck in the tank
- Blocked inlet filter on the mains connection
Try this first
- Refill the tank or open the mains shut-off.
- Wiggle the float sensor in the tank to free it if it's stuck.
- Check the inlet hose isn't kinked behind the machine.
If the tank is full and the float isn't stuck, but the code stays, the float sensor itself needs replacement.
21 Water flow error / pump fault
The pump is running but the flow meter isn't registering the expected water volume. The brew chamber may be blocked, the pump output may be low, or the flow meter itself isn't reading.
Likely causes
- Grind set too fine (most common single cause)
- Scale obstructing the flow meter impeller
- Pump worn and not producing rated pressure
- Air lock in the water lines after a refill
Try this first
- Adjust grind one or two steps coarser and try again.
- Run a hot-water dispense to clear any air lock.
- If the machine has been moved or the tank was bone-dry, prime the lines per the on-screen prompts.
If grind is correct and the code persists, the flow meter or pump needs servicing. Common on machines past 5 years.
Water filter exhausted Water filter change required
The water filter cartridge has run through its rated volume. Continued use without replacement accelerates scale buildup in the boiler.
Likely causes
- Filter at end of rated life
- Higher cup volume than the filter is sized for
- Counter not reset after the last filter swap

- Replace the cartridge with the correct Schaerer-spec filter.
- Reset the filter counter through the menu.
- Confirm water-hardness setting matches your actual water.

Sensors
3 codes72 Sensor / CAN bus communication fault
The controller lost communication with one or more sensors on the internal CAN bus (the network that connects sensors and controllers inside the machine). Specific sub-codes identify which node is silent.
Likely causes
- Loose connector on a sensor harness
- Failed sensor
- Damaged CAN cable
- Controller board CAN driver issue
Try this first
- Power-cycle and watch which functions return and which don't. That narrows down the silent node.
- Don't open the head to chase wires.
- Photograph the screen with the error so the tech can see the sub-code.
Internal bus faults are technician-only. Call us with the sub-code in hand.
73 Steam valve fault
The steam solenoid valve isn't responding as expected. Either it's not opening when commanded, or it's not closing fully.
Likely causes
- Scale buildup on the valve seat
- Worn valve cartridge leaking past
- Failed solenoid coil
- Wiring issue at the valve

- Run a descale cycle if it's due.
- Listen for the valve clicking on steam commands.
- Note whether steam still produces but is weak (different from no steam).
Steam valve replacement is straightforward but requires draining the boiler. Call us.
75 Cup detection sensor fault
On self-service Coffee Soul configurations, the optical cup detection sensor isn't reading a cup or is reading inconsistently. Drink will dispense but the machine may warn the user.
Likely causes
- Coffee residue or milk splatter on the sensor lens
- Sensor mount knocked out of alignment
- Cup material outside the sensor's detection range (very dark, very transparent)
- Failed sensor
Try this first
- Wipe the sensor lens with a clean dry cloth.
- Confirm the sensor is pointed at the cup drop zone, not off-axis.
- Test with a standard ceramic mug to rule out cup-material issues.
If a clean sensor still misreads, replacement is quick and inexpensive.
Cleaning
4 codes50 Cleaning required
The cleaning interval counter has hit its threshold. Daily, weekly, or full sanitation cycle is overdue. The machine may restrict certain drinks until cleaning is completed.
Likely causes
- Daily clean was skipped
- Counter reset wasn't completed after the last cycle
- Machine is genuinely overdue
Try this first
- Run the prompted cleaning cycle end to end with the correct cleaner.
- After the cycle, verify the counter has reset.
- Refresh the team on the daily clean SOP if it's being skipped.
If you ran the cycle and the warning won't clear, the counter reset isn't taking. We can clear it through the service menu.
51 Cleaning cycle interrupted
A cleaning cycle started but did not complete. Could be a power blip, an open door mid-cycle, or a level sensor reading wrong.
Likely causes
- Door opened during cycle
- Power interrupted mid-cycle
- Cleaning solution exhausted before cycle finished
- Level sensor in cleaning tank misreading
Try this first
- Restart the cleaning cycle from the menu and let it run uninterrupted.
- Use fresh cleaning solution.
- Don't open the door, drip tray, or grounds container during the cycle.
If you can't get a cycle to complete on a second try, there's a sensor or pump issue. Book a visit.
52 Cleaning solution empty
The cleaning solution reservoir or cleaning tablet dispenser is empty. Cycles that need cleaner are blocked until refilled.
Likely causes
- Bottle or tablet supply actually empty
- Suction tube not properly inserted into the bottle
- Level sensor failure
Try this first
- Replace the cleaner bottle or refill the tablet dispenser.
- Confirm the suction tube reaches the bottom of the bottle.
- Reset the cleaner-low counter through the menu.
Only call if the sensor is misreading a full bottle. Otherwise, fresh cleaner solves it.
55 Descaling required
The descale counter has hit its threshold, calculated from water hardness and cup count since the last descale. Some drinks may be restricted.
Likely causes
- Descale interval reached
- Counter wasn't reset after the last descale
- Water hardness set higher than actual (causing early prompt)
Try this first
- Run the full descale cycle with the correct Schaerer descaler.
- Reset the counter through the menu.
- If your area's water hardness has changed (filter swap, building system change), update the setting.
If the descale was just done and the prompt persists, the counter isn't resetting. We can clear it.
Other
1 codeHACCP log full HACCP / cleaning log memory full
On machines configured for HACCP food-safety logging, the internal event log has reached capacity. The machine will continue to run but new events overwrite the oldest.
Likely causes
- Log retention period reached
- USB export not run for a long time
- Log size setting too small for actual use
Try this first
- Insert a USB stick and export the log per the menu.
- After successful export, clear the log.
- If your venue requires HACCP records, ensure the export is part of weekly closing.

Can I clear or reset a Schaerer error code myself?
