Slayer error codes, what they mean and how to fix them.
Slayer machines tell you most of what's wrong through behaviour: paddle feel, pour quality, steam texture, and a small set of controller alerts. This page covers the alerts and wear states we actually see on the Espresso V3, Espresso Single Group, Steam EP, Steam LP, and Steam Single, with what each one means and what to try before calling. Older Steam LPx, Steam X, and Timer Evo units show the same patterns, so the same notes apply.

Needle valve
1 codeNeedle valve rough Paddle travel uneven, pre-infusion ramp inconsistent
Sediment, scale, or a worn valve seat inside the patented needle valve is making paddle travel uneven and the pre-infusion ramp inconsistent. Most Espresso V3 machines rarely show a numbered code for this; it announces itself through paddle feel and pour-quality drift long before the controller notices.
Likely causes
- Sediment or scale inside the needle valve
- Worn valve seat roughening the taper
- Actuator linkage running dry
Try this first
- Work the paddle slowly through its full range and feel where it catches.
- Check your water filtration is in date; sediment is the usual feed.
- Note whether the pre-infusion ramp drifts on every group or just one.
The valve assembly comes apart for a proper clean of the needle and seat, a fresh seal kit, and lubrication of the actuator linkage, with smooth actuation verified from full restriction to wide open. We carry the seal kits on the truck, so this is usually a single visit. Call us.
Boiler
3 codesGroup NTC fault Group boiler NTC fault on one group
One group boiler is reporting a temperature outside the plausible range, or its resistance reading no longer matches the reference table. When one group drifts while the others sit stable, that group's NTC sensor is the prime suspect.
Likely causes
- NTC sensor drifted out of its resistance range
- Scale insulating the probe from the boiler
- Connector wear on the sensor harness
Try this first
- Compare the affected group's display against the other groups.
- Power off for 30 seconds and back on.
- Keep the healthy groups in service; the fault stays contained to one.
The sensor's resistance is tested against the temperature reference table at known reference points, and the boiler gets descaled if scale is insulating the probe. A sensor out of spec is replaced, the PID recalibrated for that group, and the other groups left untouched. Call us.
Group PID drift Group boiler PID instability or temperature drift
The PID is failing to hold its setpoint within tolerance. NTC sensor drift, scale on the element insulating heat transfer, or a controller tuning parameter that shifted after a firmware update are the common causes.

- Scale on the element slowing heat transfer
- Tuning parameter shifted after a firmware update
Try this first
- Power the machine off for 30 seconds and back on.
- Compare the set temperature against the display once fully warm.
- Confirm the descale schedule is current.
We test the NTC, descale the boiler, verify element resistance against spec, and re-tune the PID through the service interface. Each group on the Slayer Steam and Espresso V3 platforms is calibrated independently, so the work stays contained to the group that drifted, with stability proven across a 10-shot test before sign-off. Element fault Heating element weak or open-circuit
The element is drawing below its rated wattage or has gone open-circuit. Slow heat-up, a boiler that rarely reaches setpoint, or repeated under-temperature alerts after a descale are the telltale symptoms.

- Element burned out or gone open-circuit
- Scale-driven hot spots damaging the element
- Element drawing below rated wattage
Try this first
- Time the warm-up against what the machine used to need.
- Power off for 30 seconds and back on to clear a stale alert.
- If a boiler never reaches setpoint, keep the affected group out of service.
Element resistance and supply voltage get measured first, then the element inspected for scale or burn-out damage; replacement itself is straightforward. Whichever boiler is affected is descaled in the same visit so the new element doesn't scale prematurely. Call us.
Steam

The steam boiler isn't holding pressure at setpoint. The cause is scale in the boiler, a failed pressure stat on stat-controlled variants, a degraded element, or an autofill circuit that isn't topping up correctly.
Likely causes
- Scale inside the steam boiler
- Failed pressure stat on stat-controlled variants
- Degraded element or autofill circuit
Try this first
- Watch the steam gauge through a service period and note how far it sags.
- Ease off back-to-back steaming and see whether pressure recovers.
- Confirm the water supply to the machine is fully open.
The boiler is descaled, the pressure stat tested at setpoint where fitted, element resistance measured, and the autofill solenoid and level probe verified. Once the faulty component is replaced, pressure stability gets proven over a 30-minute hold test before we leave. Call us.
Steam valve wear Steam wand cartridge worn or steam weak
The steam valve cartridge or tip seal has worn out. The valve drips when closed, steam feels weak at full open, or the action catches mid-throw.
Likely causes
- Steam valve cartridge worn past sealing
- Tip seal degraded
- Scale through the wand internals
Try this first
- Open the valve fully and snap it closed once to clear the seat.
- Soak the steam tip and clear its holes.
- Purge the wand before and after every pitcher.
The steam valve gets rebuilt with a fresh cartridge and tip seal, and the wand internals and tip orifice descaled. Dry steam delivery is verified at full open, and the steam tip threads checked so everything seals correctly on reinstall. Call us.
Pressure
1 codePre-infusion solenoid Pre-infusion flat or absent (Steam EP)
On the Steam EP, pre-infusion is gated electronically by a solenoid rather than mechanically by a paddle. A failed solenoid gives you flat pre-infusion, no infusion phase at all, or a phase that ignores the programmed curve.
Likely causes
- Solenoid sticking or gone open-circuit
- Controller output signal degrading
- Programmed curve no longer reaching the valve
Try this first
- Power the machine off for 30 seconds and back on.
- Compare the pre-infusion phase across groups.
- Note whether the curve matches what your bar programmed.
Solenoid actuation and coil resistance get tested alongside the controller's output signal, and a sticking or open-circuit solenoid is replaced. The pre-infusion curve is logged with a portafilter gauge before and after, so you can see the change rather than take our word for it. Call us.
Pump
1 codeLow brew pressure Pump output below spec under load
The rotary pump is no longer delivering 9 bar at the group under load. A weak pour, a slow ramp to full pressure, or an OPV that won't bypass under sustained extraction are the usual giveaways.

- Rotary pump vanes worn after years of daily service
- Expansion valve drifted off its setting
- Inlet restriction starving the pump
Try this first
- Watch the brew gauge during back-to-back shots and note where it sags.
- Confirm the water supply and any inlet filter aren't restricting flow.
- Compare the ramp to full pressure against how it used to feel.
Brew pressure is measured at the group with a portafilter gauge and pump output checked to atmosphere, then the expansion valve adjusted. Pump output below spec means a new pump head. Most Slayer machines hold their pump output well; the ones that drift have usually logged five-plus years of daily service. Call us.
Group head
1 codeGroup gasket leak Coffee weeping during extraction
The group gasket has reached the end of its service life. It's a standard wear item, replaced every 6 to 12 months under café volume, and the machine signals it through leak patterns and pour quality rather than any controller alert.
Likely causes
- Group gasket at the end of its service life
- Worn dispersion screen spreading the leak
- Grounds buildup on the group seat
Try this first
- Wipe the group seat clean of grounds and reseat the portafilter firmly.
- Back-flush the group and try the shot again.
- Test with a second portafilter to rule out a worn basket rim.
The dispersion screen and shower screw come out, the gasket is replaced with the correct Slayer-spec part, and the screen descaled if it needs it. A clean seal is verified across multiple test shots, with the dispersion screen inspected for wear while the group is open. Call us.
Electronics
1 codeController fault Display fault, dead button, or controller error
Slayer controllers themselves are robust; the ribbon connectors and button membranes around them wear with daily use. Symptoms run from a single dead button to a fully blank display.
Likely causes
- Ribbon connector wear behind the panel
- Button membrane worn through
- Controller board fault, the rarest of the three
Try this first
- Power the machine off for a full minute and back on.
- Test each button and note exactly which respond.
- Photograph anything the display shows before it blanks.
Diagnosis isolates the fault to the controller board, the user interface module, or the wiring harness before anything is ordered. Boards come direct from Slayer or through the Cimbali parts channel, and button membranes from stock; most of these fixes finish in a single visit. Call us.
Sensors
2 codesEncoder fault Paddle encoder erratic (Steam EP, Espresso v3)
Encoder-equipped machines read paddle position electronically to drive pre-infusion timing and the pump ramp. When the encoder starts failing, you get erratic pre-infusion, missed start triggers, or a ramp that goes flat.
Likely causes
- Encoder signal dropping across the paddle range
- Paddle home position out of calibration
- Wiring between encoder and controller degrading
Try this first
- Power the machine off for 30 seconds and back on.
- Move the paddle through a few slow full strokes and watch whether the machine tracks it.
- Note whether the misses are one group or all of them.
Encoder output gets tested across the full paddle range with a service interface or scope, and a dropping signal means a replacement, followed by recalibrating the paddle home position through the service menu. The Espresso V3 calibration sequence differs from the Steam EP's, so running the right procedure matters. Call us.
Flow meter fault Dose drift on Steam EP volumetric
Volumetric dosing lives or dies on the flow meter's pulse count. Mineral buildup on the impeller drops pulses, the controller reads that as dose drift, and shot volumes start varying cycle to cycle.
Likely causes
- Mineral buildup dropping impeller pulses
- Worn impeller bearing
- Water hardness running past the filtration
Try this first
- Reprogram one dose and test whether it holds over ten shots.
- Weigh shots from each group to see which meters wander.
- Check the softener and filter are in date.
The flow meter comes out for an impeller clean, then each dose is reprogrammed against a target volume by weight. A worn impeller bearing means a new meter rather than a clean, and water filtration gets checked at the same time, because Slayer flow meters are sensitive to hardness. Call us.

Can I clear or reset a Slayer error code myself?
Sometimes. Many Slayer codes clear after a power cycle, a completed descale, or a counter reset through the service menu. Codes tied to a hardware fault (failed sensor, blown element, board issue) will return immediately and need a technician. Each code above lists what's safe to try first.
Why does the same Slayer error keep coming back?
A code that returns after a power cycle is signalling a real fault, not a glitch. The underlying part (sensor, heating element, valve, motor, board) needs replacement. Repeat codes are diagnostic gold for us, so call with the exact code and any timing or symptom pattern you've noticed.
My Slayer code isn't listed. Why?
Slayer updates fault tables across firmware revisions and model generations, and not every code is documented publicly. We see codes in the field that aren't in any published list. Call us with the exact display string and the model and we'll work it out from our service log.
How fast can you get on-site if I'm stuck on an error code?
Most calls in Toronto and the immediate GTA get same-day on-site response. Tell us the code and the model when you book and we'll bring the right parts on the first visit so the repair finishes the same day.
Do I need to be authorized by Slayer to reset an error code?
No. We're an independent service provider, not affiliated with Slayer, and we work on machines outside the manufacturer's authorized network routinely. That independence lets us service older or out-of-warranty machines authorized networks may decline, and quote transparently every time.
Is it worth fixing an old Slayer machine that keeps throwing codes?
Depends on the machine, the code, and the cost. We give you honest math on this. If repairs are starting to exceed roughly 50% of a refurbished replacement and multiple major systems are throwing codes, we'll tell you it's time to look at replacing rather than running up the repair bill.
Will independent service void my Slayer warranty?
If your machine is under the manufacturer's warranty, independent service may affect coverage depending on Slayer's specific terms. Try the manufacturer's authorized network first. If their response is slow or they decline coverage for your code, call us and we'll service it on standard terms.
