Built for volume. Down anyway?

The GTA's Thermoplan repair specialists.

A Thermoplan doesn't get bought for light duty, so when one stops, the queue it was carrying doesn't. We repair the Black&White4 family, full-size, Compact, Competizione, and neo, plus the legacy machines still pouring in hotels and food courts from Hamilton to Oshawa. Auto-Steam Master foam gone flat, a jammed brew group, a TX code that won't clear: tell us which machine and what it's doing, and there's a good chance we've fixed that exact fault this month.

Thermoplan commercial coffee machine, serviced by Grajqevci in Toronto and the GTA.
Thermoplan commercial coffee machine logo.

The machines behind coffee at chain scale.

Thermoplan is the quiet Swiss firm behind some of the world's biggest coffee programs, Starbucks' Mastrena included. The machines are engineered like it: dual grinders and dual hoppers, separate brew and steam boilers, and the Auto-Steam Master milk system holding foam texture at volumes that would wreck a lighter machine. From the service side they're dense but logical. The ones that get their cleaning cycles and scheduled servicing reach ten to fifteen years; the ones that skip them land on our bench early, milk side first.

Thermoplan faults we diagnose

Common Thermoplan issues, and how we fix them.

The Thermoplan faults below are the ones that actually stop service, each with its usual cause and the repair that follows.

Brew system & pressure 3 issues
!

Brew unit jam or incomplete cycle

High-volume machines earn this one: the brew piston jams on grind buildup, the cam followers wear, or the brew group sits misaligned after a previous service. We pull the brew unit, clean every wear surface, fit fresh seals and gaskets, lubricate the drive, and run repeated test shots until it cycles clean.

!

Coffee grounds appearing in the cup

Grounds in the cup point to a torn brew screen, a worn piston seal, or grind that has drifted too fine. We inspect both screens, replace whatever shows wear, fit a new piston seal, and recalibrate grind coarseness against the dose targets.

!

Coffee dispensed weak or watery

Three suspects: grind drifted coarse, brew temperature running low, or a pump that no longer makes pressure. We measure all three at the machine, adjust grind and dose where that's the answer, and quote a pump replacement only if the readings say the pump is done.

Water, boiler & heating 4 issues
!

Steam pressure dropping during high-volume runs

When steam fades mid-rush, the cause is scale in the steam circuit, a degrading element, or a pressure regulator that has drifted. We descale the steam pathway, measure boiler output, confirm the regulator holds its setpoint, and replace anything reading below spec. The fix gets proven with a high-volume test run before we leave.

!

Slow heat-up or boiler temperature not reaching set point

Scale insulating the heating element causes most of these, with element fatigue and a failing NTC sensor behind the rest. We descale the boiler, time the heat-up against spec, test element resistance, and replace the element if the numbers don't recover.

!

Descaling or filter alert won't clear after running the cycle

An alert that survives the cycle usually means the counter rarely reset, or the filter cartridge is exhausted and the machine knows it. We confirm the cycle actually completed, reset the counter through the service menu, fit a fresh cartridge where needed, and check measured water hardness against your filtration spec.

!

Water leaking from under the machine

Most leaks trace to a failed O-ring on a water connector, a brew unit seal, or a hairline crack in an internal hose. We pressure-test the water circuit, find the exact point it's letting go, and replace the failing part. The machine runs test cycles until we've watched it stay dry.

Milk & steam 4 issues
!

Auto-Steam Master not producing proper foam texture

Milk protein builds up in the steam-milk module, the intake spring fatigues, or the air-metering valve drifts out of calibration, and the foam loses its texture. We strip and sanitize the milk system, fit new springs and seals, recalibrate the air intake, and check foam quality on every drink profile before we pack up.

!

Milk dispensing cold despite a full heating cycle

The usual suspects are a failing milk temperature sensor or scale coating the milk-side heat exchanger. We test the sensor against a reference probe, descale the milk circuit, and swap the sensor if it reads out of spec. One visit usually closes it.

!

Milk pump not drawing from the cooler or weak flow

A worn pump impeller, an air leak in the suction line between cooler and machine, or a blocked intake screen will all starve the milk side. We pressure-test the line, open the pump head, and fit a new impeller if flow measures below spec. While we're in there, the suction-line seals get replaced as cheap insurance.

!

Off-taste or sour smell in milk drinks

Sour smells mean the daily clean cycle has been skipped or the cleaning chemical has lost its strength. We deep-clean the full milk pathway, sanitize the cooler connection, replace the hose if it's stained, and walk your staff through the cleaning routine so the smell doesn't come back.

Electronics, grinder & other 6 issues
!

Dual-grinder dose inconsistency between hoppers

On dual-hopper machines one grinder usually does most of the work, so its burrs wear faster and the two sides stop agreeing. We weigh dose output from each grinder across 10 shots, measure the burr gaps, recalibrate dose targets per hopper, and replace burrs only when the measurements call for it.

!

Grinder noise or beans not feeding from the hopper

A rattle or an empty grind usually means a foreign object in the burrs, beans bridging above the throat, or a motor on its last legs. We open the grinder, clear whatever's in there, inspect the burrs for chipping, degrease the throat, and test motor current draw. If the motor is the fault, replacing it is routine work.

!

Touchscreen freeze or unexpected restart

A frozen screen is usually a firmware hang, sometimes a controller board fault or a corrupted update. We establish which before quoting anything, reflash from a known-good image where software is the cause, and replace the controller board only when the hardware has genuinely failed.

!

CTM interface error or telemetry not reporting

The CTM goes quiet when network settings drift, the communication module fails, or a sensor stops reporting to it. We verify the network configuration, reset the telemetry stack, test the sensor signals, and replace the comms module if that's where the fault sits.

!

Self-cleaning cycle interrupted or won't complete

Usually the level sensor in the cleaning tank is misreading, or the cleaning circuit's return line is blocked. We watch where the cycle stalls, clear the blockage, replace the sensor if it's at fault, and run the full cycle to completion before calling it fixed.

!

Older Black & White or CTM-Series machines needing discontinued parts

Legacy Thermoplan machines stay on our books long after other shops drop them. Parts that are out of production get sourced from refurbisher networks, salvaged from decommissioned units, or matched with aftermarket equivalents where the quality holds up. And if a repair stops being economical, we tell you straight.

FAQ

Thermoplan service, frequently asked.

20 answers covering service, repair, parts, installation, warranty, and edge cases.

Updated July 2026

Do you actually service Thermoplan machines in Toronto and the GTA?

Yes, routinely. Most of our Thermoplan calls come from hotels, food courts, large offices, and chain QSR sites, the same operators the machines are built for. Coverage runs from Hamilton around the lake to Oshawa, and the zone list further down this page has the detail.

What's the most common Thermoplan fault you get called for?

Milk texture, by a wide margin. The Auto-Steam Master is a precise system, and milk protein buildup, a tired intake spring, or air-metering drift will flatten the foam long before anything else on the machine complains. Brew group jams and grinder dose drift fill out the top three. All three are normally fixed in a single visit.

Are you authorized by Thermoplan?

No, and we won't dress it up. Grajqevci is an independent commercial coffee equipment specialist. That independence is why we can work on out-of-warranty machines, quote against the actual fault instead of a program price book, and keep older Black&White units running after the official channel loses interest.

Is Thermoplan the company that makes the Starbucks machines?

Yes. The Mastrena machines behind every Starbucks counter are built by Thermoplan in Weggis, Switzerland, and that partnership is into its second decade. The Mastrena itself is Starbucks-exclusive and serviced through Starbucks' own program, so we don't work on machines inside corporate stores. The Black&White machines we do service share the same engineering DNA.

What does error TX0113 mean on a Thermoplan?

TX0113 is a piston error: the brew piston didn't reach the position the controller expected. Grind buildup, a worn piston seal, or a failed position sensor are the usual reasons. One restart is worth trying, but if the code returns, the brewer needs proper service rather than repeated power cycles.

My Thermoplan says service required (TX0136). Can I keep using it?

Better not to. TX0136 is the firmware's hard stop, raised when the machine has accumulated faults or detected something a technician has to see. Running drinks through it anyway can turn a contained problem into a damaged one. Write down everything on the screen and book a visit.

Why does the milk foam on our Black&White4 keep going flat?

Foam texture lives or dies on the Auto-Steam Master's air metering, and three things disturb it: protein buildup in the steam-milk module, a fatigued intake spring, and calibration drift in the air valve. A daily clean that's actually happening prevents most of it. When it has already drifted, we strip and sanitize the module, renew the wear parts, and recalibrate against each drink profile.

What's the difference between the Black & White 4 and the Compact?

Capacity and width, mostly. The full-size B&W4 is rated for up to 500 cups a day; the Compact carries the same dual-grinder, dual-boiler architecture in a 228 mm chassis rated around 150 cups. From a repair standpoint they wear the same way, so neither waits longer for parts. The Compact's tighter packaging just makes some jobs slower to reach.

How long should a Thermoplan machine last?

Ten to fifteen years is the realistic window, and the cleaning routine decides which end you land on. Milk hygiene and scale are what kill these machines early, and both are preventable. We look after Black&White units well past the ten-year mark that still pour all day.

How much does a Thermoplan repair cost?

The visit and diagnosis are a flat amount you hear when you book, with parts billed at cost on top. Small jobs, like milk-system seals or a sensor, stay small. Bigger ones, like a brew group overhaul or a boiler element, get a written quote on-site before any work starts.

Do you carry Thermoplan parts on the truck?

The high-turnover ones, yes: brew group seal kits, milk-system springs and O-rings, hoses, common sensors, filter cartridges. That stock covers most first visits. Boards, pumps, grinder burr sets, and boiler components are ordered per job, usually landing within a couple of business days.

Can you fix the CTM touchscreen or telemetry on our machines?

Yes. Most CTM complaints are firmware hangs or network configuration drift rather than dead hardware, and those clear with a controlled reset, a reflash, or a settings fix. Genuine display or comms module failures are part swaps we handle routinely. If telemetry went quiet after an IT change on your side, mention it; that's the cause more often than the machine.

The grinder is blocked and the machine shows TX0185. What should I do?

Power it off and leave it off. TX0185 means the grinder motor is drawing excess current, almost always because a stone or other foreign object is jammed in the burrs, and every retry risks burning out the motor. We clear the jam, inspect the burrs for chipping, and test the motor before putting the grinder back to work.

How often does a Thermoplan need descaling on GTA water?

Most of the region's lake-fed supply runs moderately hard, which puts high-volume machines on a two-to-three-month descale rhythm; harder pockets like Hamilton and York Region shorten it. The machine tracks its own interval if the hardness setting matches reality, so we verify that setting on every visit. Ignoring TX0170 is the expensive option.

Do you service the older Black & White 3 or CTM-Series machines?

Yes, for as long as parts hold out. Plenty of B&W3 and CTM-Series units are still earning their keep, and we keep them going with parts from refurbisher networks and decommissioned donors. Availability does thin year over year, so if one of these matters to your operation, get it assessed before something major fails.

What if our Thermoplan is still under manufacturer warranty?

Tell us before booking, because sometimes the warranty is your better route and we'll say so on the phone. A lot of real-world faults sit outside coverage anyway: scale, milk hygiene, and worn consumables are on the owner in most programs. Those we handle without touching your warranty position.

Can you look after Thermoplan machines across multiple locations?

Yes, multi-site fleets are normal work for us. One contact, one booking process, and a per-machine report after each round so your operations team sees the fleet in one place. Fleets also reveal patterns: when three sites share a fault, the water or the cleaning routine is usually the real culprit.

Do you do after-hours Thermoplan service for hotels?

Often, yes. Lobby and breakfast machines are the reason we keep evening and weekend capacity, arranged case by case when you book. Tell us your quiet window and we'll aim the visit at it.

Why does steam pressure drop during our morning rush?

Sustained steam draw exposes whatever the boiler has been hiding: scale in the steam circuit, a degrading element, or a drifting pressure regulator. The machine keeps up at low volume and fades exactly when you need it most. We test under load, descale the steam side, and replace whatever component the measurements condemn.

Can you service the new Black & White 4 Competizione?

Yes. Underneath the competition styling it's a B&W4, a platform we already know well, and the intelligent steam wand is service territory we've taken on. Newer wand-specific parts can carry longer lead times, which we flag when quoting. Heavy latte-art use mostly accelerates familiar wear rather than inventing new faults.

About Thermoplan

Reviewed July 2026

Thermoplan, in brief.

Thermoplan is a Swiss manufacturer of commercial super-automatic coffee machines, built for the very highest cup volumes: hotel chains, airlines, and the world's biggest coffee programs.

Swiss engineering, global hospitality

Thermoplan AG was founded in 1974 in Weggis, Switzerland, on the shore of Lake Lucerne. It became one of the most quietly important coffee equipment makers in the world by winning the exclusive contract to supply Starbucks with its Mastrena machine platform. That partnership is now in its second decade and currently ships the Mastrena II Pro. Beyond Mastrena, Thermoplan's Black & White series works in hotels, restaurants, airlines, and foodservice operations around the world.

Built for the highest-volume hospitality programs

Thermoplan machines are built for places where downtime turns into queues fast: airline catering programs serving thousands of in-flight cups, hotel chains running 24-hour lobby and breakfast service, and restaurant groups holding coffee quality steady across hundreds of locations. The Black & White 4 platform is rated for daily output well into the hundreds of cups with minimal intervention between cleaning cycles.

Signature technologies

Thermoplan is best known for the Auto-Steam Master milk system, which produces hot and cold milk foam with calibrated texture across drink profiles. The dual-grinder, dual-hopper architecture lets operators serve two bean varieties from one unit. On CTM-equipped machines, the Centre Touch Module folds payment, telemetry, and the operator interface into a single screen. The patented milk-foam system has carried the Starbucks Mastrena platform for over a decade, and the Black & White 4 Compact, at 228 mm wide, is the narrowest professional super-automatic in its class.

The Thermoplan range we service

The current range is the Black&White4 family: the full-size Black&White4, the narrow Black&White4 Compact, the barista-focused Black&White4 Competizione, and the Black&White4 neo. CT, CTS, CTM, PF, RL, and TwinTower badges are configurations of those machines rather than separate models, so whichever combination yours carries, the platform underneath is one we know.

Why machines this premium need specialist service

The Auto-Steam Master milk system and the Thermoplan brew group are precision sub-assemblies designed to hold quality at airline and chain-restaurant volume. The CTM interface, telemetry, and dual-grinder architecture add layers above a typical super-automatic. A generalist appliance technician working from a downloaded manual tends to miss the platform-specific causes behind milk-system faults, brew group wear, and dual-grinder dose drift. That gap is exactly the work we've built our Thermoplan practice around.
